Just a shout out to say what an amazing thing Sara is doing for BBC Children in Need, an ultra marathon from the Scottish Borders, over the Pennines and Dales to Pudsey in Yorkshire. The weather is atrocious, but she is battling on, now on Day 3. She has already raised over £1m from Radio 2 listeners donations. How many people could do such a physically and mentally challenging feat, at 50, well done her.

She’s done it!! 🥰

She is nearly at the finish line, my admiration for her knows no bounds.

She sounds broken, she said she is in a lot of pain (shin splints and feet) there is a physiotherapist with her making sure she is ok to continue.

Well done Sara, over £6,000,000 raised in her name 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏

I agree foxie48 there will always be people who want to take on challenges whether it be mountaineering, sky diving or marathons and good luck to them. Providing they are properly supported it can only be a positive thing. God forbid we should all sit at home with our social media. Of course hospices, counselling services etc should be government funded but the fact is they are not so a big thank you to all the people who help raise funds by whatever means.

Thank you so much for the Radio3 unwind recommendation. It is lovely and very calming

People do these challenges because they raise money and they do raise a lot of money for really good causes. People like to do extreme challenges, it's not just well known people doing it for things like Children in Need. People pay to do extreme challenges. they may not be popular with some on here but they are certainly popular with other people and some of them are not in the first flush of youth. My daughter has been a medic on several extreme events with the job of ensuring that participants are fit to start and get any medical attention they need to continue safely. Sara Cox will have had excellent ongoing medical care from people who know what they are doing and will have been passed as fit to start.

I worry that eventually someone will die doing these challenges.

I completely agree midgey - I like Sara Cox and am in awe of what she has achieved this week BUT seeing the latest videos of her and hearing her on the Scott Mills radio show this morning has made me think the BBC won’t be happy until someone has keeled over trying to complete one of these events for Children in Need! Each year, they seem to get harder and harder and it makes for very uncomfortable viewing/listening. Sara herself said today she was very worried about how ‘puffy’ she was in general but that she had never seen her ankles and feet look how they were looking today! It’s ridiculous to put anyone through this, irrespective of whether a charity benefits or not, and has done nothing to improve the already tainted image of the BBC in my eyes I’m afraid. Just my personal opinion obviously ….

Well done Sara, amazing lady raising so much for charity so they can continue their good works.
No, we shouldnt have to rely on people raising money and other donations , but we do!

Jaxjacky Fri 14-Nov-25 13:57:02

I admire her, just seen her interviewed, she’s doing it for herself as much as CiN with full medical back up, good on her!

Maybe we shouldn't have to raise money for hospices and Children in Need but the reality is these projects fill a vital gap and do incredible work as I know first hand from our local Hospice. So I for one salute Sara .

No we shouldn’t have to raise money for Hospices & Children in Need, but we don’t live in an ideal world.
I do think that Sara Cox is amazing & has raised the awareness for 50+ women & what they can achieve.
I have donated to Children in Need & Sara has inspired me to start Couch to 5k.
I’m 58.
It’s amazing what you can achieve when you put your mind to it 😊

I assume she is being properly looked after by her medical/well being team and I really hope she is ok

Poppyred Fri 14-Nov-25 13:10:08

Well done Sara, it must be agony!

I agree. I used to work for a great local charity and one of their main sources of funding came from Children in Need. People have and will always push themselves to the limits - some to raise money and awareness for charity, others just because they can. You get people doing all kinds of extreme challenges just for the sake of it - should we stop them too?

Thanks Kandinsky!

Kandinsky Fri 14-Nov-25 12:59:26

I agree with you too!

Crossstitchfan Fri 14-Nov-25 12:58:22

Thanks to all who agreed with me. I expected to be buried under a barrage of abuse!

Millie22 Fri 14-Nov-25 12:46:22

And me too.

I think the time has come to stop these charity runs/walks/marathons before someone is seriously ill.

Grandmabatty Fri 14-Nov-25 12:11:46

You and me both crossstitchfan

I'm with you crosstitchfan

Surely there must be better ways to raise money than by doing runs that can damage your own body? Do something to help, yes, but not by taking stupid risks with your own health and safety.
I don’t know why, but for years now I have been uncomfortable with Children in Need and find I can get a bit irritated by it. It’s strange because I appreciate that a lot of money is raised.
Ignore me! I’m sure I’m in the minority here

Grandmabatty Fri 14-Nov-25 11:42:31

I disagree with Children in Need because I don't think that charities should be doing this. In an ideal world, children would be looked after by parents or the state would support families. I feel the same about hospices. They shouldn't have to rely on charity. I'm probably out of step but I find the whole thing distasteful.

Gummie Fri 14-Nov-25 10:54:40

They are raising a huge sum of money and I do admire her, but at the same time wish she would stop as she will be doing long term damage to her own body.

There's no shame in say enough is enough. She is guilt tripped into continuing even though you can see quite clearly the pain she is in.

Aveline Fri 14-Nov-25 10:49:10

I agree Kandinsky. My late father always used to lament the uselessness of these sponsored events. Why not sponsor the decorating of people's houses, producing of meals for the homeless, restoration of old properties? I see his point.

Kandinsky Fri 14-Nov-25 09:40:11

I don’t think seeing a 50 year old woman putting herself through pain is anything to celebrate tbh. Why the admiration?
She could have put herself in danger.
It’s great that she raised a lot of money but that money could ( and would have ) been raised in a much easier way.
