Good morning to all the night owls
I m late waking this morning and seem to have missed my
3 am slot however 4.30 am will do ( 4 and a half hours is positively a very long sleep for me) who knows I might even drop of again for a doze before I get up at 6 ready for some work
So who s around ?

cornergran Tue 09-Dec-25 07:53:28

A solid 7 hours sleep. Wonderful! I’m sorry so many struggled last night. I may well join you tonight smile.

NanKate Tue 09-Dec-25 07:43:16

A better night for me. Woke up 3 times went to the loo then miraculously back to sleep👍. That is a relief as I am going out with a friend this morning for coffee and cake at the Ivy where I love the Art Nouveau decor. Makes a change from one of our local Garden Centres.

Up between 2.30 and 4.00
Night time tea and my book, the fire was easy to get going, so it was still warm.
I don’t understand, and this is a serious question, why during the day, I only have to close my eyes and I’m gone, but those long dark hours of the night keep me awake for hours.

Because you are expected to sleep at night and even if you aren’t positively thinking about it the perceived requirement puts pressure on you.
You have no expectations of daytime naps therefore no disappointments, you just relax and are gone
That’s the difference

It is true for many of us, the long dark night when we should be asleep we aren't, but sit down middle of the afternoon I drift off so easily. I've been awake since 4am ish this morning.

Erica23 Tue 09-Dec-25 06:46:32

Morning all. A good night for me, asleep at 9.30 and apart from a brief wake at midnight when DH got up for the loo I slept until 4.30. My sciatica eased up yesterday 🤞so I managed to stay in bed until 6.
Looking forward to today, meeting my old work friends for lunch. Hope you all have the best day you can.

Old age can be cruel but for some it is fulfilling seeing the family thrive and a new generation coming along.
The dice falls whichever way and we can only count our blessings if we are the lucky ones whose family involve us.
A fairly decent night for me but the temperature, so mild for the time of year , isn’t conducive to sleep.

Esmay Tue 09-Dec-25 05:29:26

Woke up at fourish and put the dishwasher on ,made a chocolate drink and watched Friends -two episodes unseen by me previously.
I tried to have an active day-ordering meds shopping chatting with one of my friends about religion and later visiting a housebound parishioner .
Visiting her made me feel depressed though I made her laugh .
She's on her own for most of the day - every day .
She used to be the Director of a huge bank and was always super active .
Now she rambles endlessly ...
Another neighbour has passed and one is in hospital fighting not to go into care .
Old age is cruel .

Morning everyone I ve had a really good night midnight to
5 am …5 hours is a fantastic night for me
Sorry all those with pains it’s so nasty to be awake with pains it’s funny how they always seem so much worse at night and the worse thing is if you have a partner who is a solid sleeper and you listen to them enjoying their zzz s
I hope everyone has a good day I can’t hear any wind or rain so got to be good 👋

Nannytopsy Tue 09-Dec-25 04:44:43

Morning! I’m here too. Hip hurting as the painkillers have worn off. It took me ages to get to sleep in the first place so I hoped to sleep longer.
I will try again

grandMattie Tue 09-Dec-25 04:37:34

Aaaagh! Why do I always have to pay with a measly 4 hours sleep, after having had a magnificent night before?
I had a very long and busy day yesterday, so should have fallen asleep quickly.
The other thing is that sleeping in my chair is easy…. Grrr 😡

Purplepixie Tue 09-Dec-25 04:02:04

Still awake at 4am!!! Arghhhhhhhh
I’m Fedup and wish I could get up and bake. DH is fast asleep.

Greenfinch Tue 09-Dec-25 04:00:31

Another one here awake and listening to the rain.May read for a bit. At least with the dark nights there is a chance of nodding off again. In Summer it begins to get light at this time and then there is no hope. I really should go to bed earlier.

crazyH Tue 09-Dec-25 03:43:30

I hope you’re catching some sleep immellinda’ -you have a job to go to. The rest of us oldies can sleep if they can manage a good 4 hours 💤

rafichagran Tue 09-Dec-25 03:20:07

Wide awake here, making use of the time doing online Christmas shopping.

J52 Tue 09-Dec-25 03:08:04

I’m awake, I’ve not been able to sleep. I’ve finished my book and that didn’t make me sleepy. I’m downstairs now having a mint tea. I can hear the rain, doesn’t help.

watermeadow Tue 09-Dec-25 03:07:49

Just checking in. Now trying again to go to sleep zzzzzz

Nanny27 Tue 09-Dec-25 02:53:28

Glad I'm not the only one awake. Been in bed since midnight but still no sleep

crazyH Tue 09-Dec-25 02:49:34

I had a short afternoon nap -wasn’t feeling good , earache, along with hearing loss. So started antibiotics.
Came upstairs about midnight - tossed and turned and now wide awake. I’ll have to scroll up and see if I can find some tips to fall asleep.
I think I’ll go down and find something to eat. They say hunger and insomnia go together. That’s my theory

mancgirl Tue 09-Dec-25 02:34:11

Awake early, even by my standards. I usually get until about 3 ish before waking up. Wouldn't mind, I only turned the light off just after midnight. I've decamped to the guest room where I can either listen to a podcast or read without disturbing Mr manc. Currently re reading Winter Solstice. A lovely read at this time of year. I fleetingly thought about finishing thr Christmas wrapping but too cosy and warm!

HelterSkelter1 Tue 09-Dec-25 02:22:50

Awake at 2.00 am despite a long walk for most of yesterday afternoon in the rain. But I managed to stay fairly dry in my good mac and under a brolly. And it was so mild for December and not windy.
I have been reading in the last half hour about the successful new treatment of a blood cancer in a teenager. Amazing. What clever scièntists and what a brave young woman. And family.

I will continue with my book now. I have water, but won't get up yet to make a drink and hope I will fall asleep reading. If not oh well I may sleep better on Tuesday night. I have nothing which demands a lively brain tomorrow. Thank goodness.

Polnan you are right its the magnesium Glycinate 400 and Malate 200 gummies that you chew, all natural no artificial fillers like the tablets and capsules. I have researched some medical journals and at these doses it should minimise unwanted side effects; diarrhoea, nausea. Like you I dread going to bed because I toss and turn every night not forgetting restless legs. I’ll be starting them 1 hour before bed so will see if it helps. I’ve also been looking to join a t’ai chi class to help relax in gentle motion. Maybe this is just the result of retiring from my job as a palliative care sister in a hospice where there was so much to think about for others I didn’t have time for unwanted brain noise. I had to be focused. Well time will tell if these help one has to try.
Thinking of all you night owls and sending you best wishes for a relaxing night.

Sara1954 Mon 08-Dec-25 21:01:24

Erica, I started with a half dose, and had no ill effects so I started a full dose.
As a said, I don’t think I’m sleeping any better, but instead is tossing and turning for hours, knowing I’m going to feel terrible the next day, I seem to have accepted that I’m not going to sleep all night, and feel much calmer while I’m awake.
That doesn’t mean I’m not on a mission to find something to help me sleep, but I’m not constantly stressed.

Aveline Mon 08-Dec-25 07:43:03

! not ?

Aveline Mon 08-Dec-25 07:42:38

We've been away for the past two nights and glad to get home to my own bed last night. Broken sleep last night though. So frustrating especially as the bed, where we were staying, had a hard lumpy mattress and nasty pillows but slept through no bother at all?
