Aveline

I was so fed up reading about how important sleep is for all aspects of health. It was as if we were somehow deciding not to sleep well!

Last week, I asked the practice nurse I saw for my blood/medication reviews.
I said I didn’t always get a good sleep any longer and could she suggest anything.
She gave me a list of do’s and don’ts-what to eat or not to eat, when to eat or when not to eat, warnings about blue light and what supplements I might find useful, or maybe not. She could have been reading GN!

She asked what I’d tried.
The nurse then said, worrying about not sleeping is just as bad for you as not sleeping.
She suggested I should try doing something useful or enjoyable while I was awake-a cup of tea, or hot chocolate, doing a next day’s task, ironing, putting the washing on, making lists if I usually did that during the day, reading or listening to a book. She even suggested writing my memoirs.
I’ve been trying some of those . . .
This morning I woke up at 09.10! when DH brought a cup of tea. 🤗🤗
Sadly that meant we had a mad scramble to get into town for a Specsavers appointment!!

Sara1954.
I agree it's really comforting to know that we aren't alone.
Believe me I've tried everything.
Valerian and magnesium tablets ,exercising and warm drinks ...
I fall asleep,but I don't stay asleep.
My nights are disturbed by loo visits and nightmares.
During the day I feel wiped out .

My. iPad did an update install which I clicked on as I was awake and I’ve just spent an hour trying to find everything. Not sure if I can get back to sleep now as these things stress me out. I’m so dependant on my iPad…

Doodledog Thu 15-Jan-26 05:01:48

I have an early appointment, so of course I’ve been awake since 3.00. If I go back to sleep now I’ll probably sleep through the alarm. It’s so annoying.

grandMattie Thu 15-Jan-26 04:49:57

‘Morning!
I have always been an early bird, but it has become earlier and earlier the older I get. At one stage, I would nap all night, at least now, the few hours I get are uninterrupted. I’m so envious of my mum who could sleep for England!
Occasionally, I take half an antihistamine which gives me a really good sleep.

BlueBelle Thu 15-Jan-26 04:28:13

Morning all I feel fine I really work on very few hours solid sleep but am fine on lots of little bits added together
Sounds quiet outside so hopefully fingers crossed no wind or rain
I ll do my morning games now then maybe another hour

Hallo Gracey - I woke a short while ago. Too tired to read but not tired enough to sleep.
I think about the logistics of the day ahead and all the things I need to do.

I no longer have a DH to be envious of or to blame for waking me.

I don't take pills but like pantglas I try to keep a sensible routine.

As for worrying about money sallywally.
"We die if we worry and we die if we don't"
As my friend says.....
So try not to.

RosesandLilac Thu 15-Jan-26 03:53:54

Good morning, sorry to see others here. I have no idea why I’m awake but it happens regularly.
I’ve tried everything to get a good nights sleep but 🤷🏼‍♀️, I guess it’s just me!

Sallywally1 Thu 15-Jan-26 03:36:56

Awake at 3.00 worrying about money and cost of living

Gracey Thu 15-Jan-26 03:20:28

Hello to all those awake in the early hours. May I join you?
I suffer from insomnia and it does affect my daily life. I feel permanently sluggish. I have tried all sorts of things to help me drop off, but a racing mind, frequent anxiety and of late, tinnitus, stops me sleeping.
I went to bed at 11pm. OH nods off reading his book and his ability to completely switch off (and start snoring) the moment his head hits the pillow makes me envious. I've been listening to gentle acoustic songs via my headphones...did a few Sudoku puzzles, read a few news articles online, but not a yawn yet.
I've tried not using screens in bed, read my book...and have lain in the dark trying relaxation and breathing techniques. I try to stay in bed as it's warm and comfortable and my feet are raised, and at least I'm relaxing.
Perhaps I was destined to be a night worker or a bat, an owl or a vampire?
I daresay I'll fall asleep eventually but early starts these days are impossible and I feel weary when I do rise. A vicious circle.
I am reluctant to take any more pills but I suspect sleeping tablets might be needed now.
I hope those who've awoken are able to get a bit more sleep before their day begins.

Pantglas2 Thu 15-Jan-26 03:12:35

Not me Helter! I’ve just put kettle on as I know that once I’ve had a warm drink and read a little I’m more like to go back to sleep.

I mentioned in an earlier post that I get one very poor night around once a month so checked the thread and sure enough, it was 16 December!

I suppose I should be grateful when some suffer on a daily/weekly basis but I try to practice good sleep hygiene, known as the 3,2,1 method (I know it sounds like a form of birth control…😂)

Basically, I don’t eat within 3 hours of bedtime, don’t drink within 2 hours of bedtime and no tv, phones, laptop within 1 hour of bedtime. It works pretty well for the most time when I get approx 6-8 hours unbroken sleep and I average around 50 hours a week.

Then comes this googly to throw me off kilter but it may be due to adverse reaction to Shingles jab and/ or worrying about Dad’s ongoing health…

Sweet dreams til the next time x

Another one here wide awake. I have done Wordle and will now read for a while. I have slept for three hours so hope for another few later if I am lucky. At least I am warm and comfortable.

HelterSkelter1 Thu 15-Jan-26 02:46:41

Wide awake. Far too early. I am warm enough and have water so will read my new book and hopefully zzzzzzź. The house and street are both quiet, but tinnitus is a noisy hiss especially in my right ear.

I hope all on this thread are fast asleep.

JamesandJon33 Wed 14-Jan-26 05:54:06

Just woken up, but a few awake bits in the night. Off home in a while. A 5 hour journey but I ‘ll be glad to get home and sleep in my bed .

grandMattie Wed 14-Jan-26 05:05:05

I waited around the entire day for a contractor sent by the management company. Did they come? Of course not!
So I didn’t have a nap. This meant that I fell asleep watching a very interesting programme on Sky Arts about “Vermeer’s Hat”. I don’t know if it is repeated or whatever, but it was excellent.
So I went to bed, was asleep by 10 and only woke up a couple of hours ago. A bit earlier Thani would have liked, but quality sleep.

Grammaretto Wed 14-Jan-26 04:35:40

I switched off the radio as it was either too interesting or too depressing - world service.
I have been playing Scrabble on-line and just lying awake contemplating the weirdness of life.

I am sorry for those of you who need sleep desperately because you have to work or aren't well. At least it's not important whether or not I get a full night's sleep.
It's just boring, cold and lonely. I miss my DH. I had a card from one of his best friends yesterday which took me back 50 years.

BlueBelle Wed 14-Jan-26 04:17:25

Morning all a very daft night Nothing at all on T V, (dammed football) ! So fell asleep by the fire until quarter to midnight !!!
Went to bed and fell fast asleep AGAIN till quarter to 3 am then out to the loo and back to sleep till 4am
A bit bitty and not even going to try any more.
Put the radio on, doing a suduko I m nice and warm and it’s a work day again today (they are my happy days)
Hope everyone is sleeping soundly zzzzzzz

Esmay Wed 14-Jan-26 03:29:25

Thanks grandMattie and BlueBelle
Tried to keep busy yesterday .
Saw one of my young fit friends .
He felt really ill with the same bug .
I recommended a hot toddy and I've just had one having been awake since one coughing with a sore throat and my eyes were glued together.
That means another loo trip .

BlueBelle Tue 13-Jan-26 07:11:31

Had a pretty good night woke at 3 something used the loo cuddled back to sleep till 5 that’s a great night
My big tips are
Don’t go to bed too early and don’t get worried or uptight about waking just accept it the more you try to get back to sleep the further away it gets
Sorry you still feel so poorly Esmay

Doodledog Tue 13-Jan-26 07:07:22

I got a great night’s sleep on Sunday, but I am paying it back now. I’ve been awake for ages, and have given up trying to get back to sleep. I have to be up soon anyway as I have an 8.30 appointment to attend.

JamesandJon33 Tue 13-Jan-26 05:00:22

We are still away. A very tiring day yesterday, so asleep by 9. DH was tired also and as we did a lot of walking and up and down stairs his knees were painful. Which means a bad night. Groans, snores, shouts etc. DH not me. So I have been awake since two. ….busy day again today…but going home tomorrow.

grandMattie Tue 13-Jan-26 04:35:45

My poor Esmay! How hard for you!
I have finally given in. I very, very rarely get up for a wee at night as it wakes me up completely. I try not to drink anything from 6 pm if I can.
Last night I had a small cup of tea at about 7 pm. My bladder was nearly bursting at 2 am. I refused to listen to it, dozed off until 4 am when I gave up! Grrr 😡. I’m sure I could have slept a bit more and better if it hadn’t let me down.
Congratulations to those who have managed a reasonable night.

Esmay Tue 13-Jan-26 01:08:36

If you've woken up like me -Nuts In May is on the beeb .
I remember it as very funny and still find it so !

Esmay Mon 12-Jan-26 16:59:11

Saturday - my head throbbed .
Yesterday I felt wiped out and then I coughed and coughed through the night .
This is really getting me down .
