Hello on this dark and very wet day! I'm quite new here fo forgive me if I haven't put this in the correct place.
I am having my first shingles jab in Tuesday. I'm normally fine with all the usual vaccines ,but for some breakfast unexplained reason I am in a bit of a stew about this one.
Have any of you had it,and if so how did you feel afterwards?
Thanks in advance .

What second jab? I was offered and accepted a shingles vaccination 3 ir 4 years ago. No ill effects that I can recall except for a sore arm but nobody mentioned a second dose.

I different vaccine used to be given by the NHS because it was cheaper. It only required 1 jab. But it wears off very quickly and will probably no longer be effective. The current vaccine (shingrex) needs 2 jabs but is much more long lasting and effective.

Anyone wondering whether or not to have the shingles vaccination should also consider the increased risk of stroke following shingles.

Thanks, Lahlah65. 🙂

I have had the first shingles jab and waiting for my second one. When I was about 45, OH had shingles and passed it to me as chickenpox. So run down with it that I got the flu with it. Doctors refused to visit me and I remember being so cheesed off that after about six days in bed I got up and slowly managed. I would definitely recommend the vaccine. My neighbour downstairs had shingles and sadly died in hospital.

I had my second dose last week,I felt a bit off colour for a couple of days.I had no side effects from the first one.Wouldn’t have considered not having it.

My appointment is at 3 pm this afternoon. Having read everyone's comments I am less worried,so thanks for . I have paracetamol in the cupboard, and some veggie soup in the fridge ,just in case. I am ready to pamper. I don't have a hot water bottle,my cat cuddles up so she's like a purring warmer smile.
I will let you all know how I get on x

I would appreciate it if anyone knows the answer to this. I think I might be immune to the virus that causes it. My children had it and I cared for them and did'nt catch it. Also I was a teacher and was close to children who were contagious and didn't catch it. Is there such a thing as being immune? Would having the jab compromise my 'immunity' if it is there?

Do you think you might be immune to the chicken pox virus (varicella zoster). Did you never have it as a child?
You can’t catch shingles. If you have ever had chicken pox, the virus remains in your body, lodged in your nervous system at the point where nerves meet your spinal cord. For reasons no one understands, the virus can be reactivated without warning, causing shingles.
If you have never had chicken pox, you can catch it from exposure to shingles.
I would speak to your doctor. It is possible to have had chicken pox mildly, with slight symptoms. But if you know for certain that you have never had chickenpox, you may not be a suitable candidate for the vaccine.

Thanks for your response Lahlah65. I will probably speak to a doctor as you suggest.

I had the first shingles vaccination last year when I had my flu jab . When I went for this years flu jab the nurse told me that I was due my second shingles jab so I had them both at the same time again . No side effects other than a sore arm for a few days .

I had the first of what was supposed to be 2 shingles jabs over a year ago. I didn’t feel great afterwards but my arm was very sore by the time I left the surgery. That lasted about 4 months and even now, after about 15 months it still aches on some days. I refused the second jab which was supposed to be done 6 months later. The surgery didn’t seem at all surprised when I said I wasn’t having the second jab. I’m very pro vaccines and it’s the only one I’ve ever had problems with.

Hope it went well Catgrann 🌻

Does anyone know why availability to receive the vaccine stops at 80?

I had the jab about 12 years ago. Last week, I was shocked to be diagnosed with shingles. So far, I seem to be recovering quite well: today I was able to put my bra on for the first time in ten days! I was glad to be immunised as my sister had a bad time with shingles and I thought I'd be safe. Maybe the jab has allowed me to recover more easily than if I'd never had it. Time will tell.

I read (can’t remember where) that it’s unknown exactly how long a Shingles vaccination gives protection from serious Shingles.
You can still contract it even with a jab, it just shouldn’t be so awful.
People who haven’t had it can underestimate just as painful it is when all your nerve endings feel like pins sticking in you.
Leaves scars too.

I had to pay €68 for my first one in April this year in France.

I've had both my shingles vaccines, no reaction at all except for a slightly sore arm.

melp1 Thu 27-Nov-25 08:43:08

I saw how poorly and painful shingles was when my Mum 2 of my friends had it.
Both me and my husband have had the inoculation twice with no side effects at all.
Hope all goes well for you.

I had a single shingles jab 10 years ago. Why is it now given in 2 doses?

silverlining48 Thu 27-Nov-25 15:44:47

We had our shingle jab about 7 years ago and also only had one.

Labradora Thu 27-Nov-25 16:21:03

You've had it by now , Catgran, hope it went well.
I had the usual vaccine " hangover" ; bit of a headache ; bit of tiredness; sore arm; upset stomach ( any upset goes straight to my stomach).
Worth it for the protection ? I think so.
Shingles is hideous and very painful. I remember my late father having it.
He was seriously stoic, a hallmark of his generation, but I remember Mum saying how much pain he was in.

Eloethan Thu 27-Nov-25 16:34:06

My Mum had shingles (in head and face) and she was in the most terrible pain. I started to get the shingles rash and a tingling/itching sore rash on my waist while I was on holiday in Portugal several years ago. I went straight to a hospital and got treatment. If treatment is given straight away, it can be warded off, and it did not progress.

silverlining48 Thu 27-Nov-25 16:37:35

I googled and it appears we who had our jabs years ago should get one of the new ones, as the old one doesn’t last.

Granatlast007 Thu 27-Nov-25 16:47:26

I was ill for a week after the follow up jab for shingles. I heard a podcast in which side effects were mentioned and the consultant on the programme said unfortunately some people did suffer bad side effects and that was how it was at the moment.

TillyTrotter Thu 27-Nov-25 17:07:44

It’s true Geanatlast but on balance it is still a no-brainer to have the second dose (if it is Shingrix) especially if you have had Shingles.
I reported my side-effects and it obviously occurs in a percentage of patients.

M0nica Thu 27-Nov-25 19:42:01

No vaccine is entirely effective and any vaccine can cause side effects for some people, but seeing how ill my mother and her sister were when they had shingles, before the vaccine was developed, a short period of being unwell is a small price to pay for being spared what my relations went through.

Hello all
Just to let you all know how I was,as so many of you took the trouble to reply.
I was really poorly the day after, stayed in bed all day apart from getting up for a drop of soup..BUT it only lasted for about 36 hours and I was fine again. I pleased I have had the jab,and am not thinking about the second one until nearer the time
