To bra or not to bra?

I’ve never had a comfortable bra and have recently decided to rid myself of the beastly things.
Under two winter jumpers you wouldn’t know the difference but I still feel I should wear one when I go out. I’m 80 and quite fat. Is this unacceptable or are the rest of you doing the same?

Once you put them on, you'll never look back.
No, your boobs dont stick out with style as much as your usual bra but comfort oh my.

BTW, washing tip, do not ignore at your peril.... If you wear them padded, if you wash them just in the usual way,

the pads work themselves round or fall out,

solution: stick them rolled up carefully in a sock and wash them that way, if you cant be bothered to hand wash. Don't dry them on a very hot radiator.

Oh, and if you buy them online, red two sizes. Its my experience they fit very slightly on the small side, the way sizing has sort of got more generous and flattering these days often, these are sort of the original 12's, 14's, etc.

Bra for me, goes on as I get dressed, off when undressing, only without one for sleeping and bathing, I could possibly get away without one, but wouldn’t feel comfortable, neither physically nor mentally.

Oh dear, I still remember my great-aunt who had a sort of squishy “shelf” just above the waistband of her skirt.
Not a good look.

Be careful my friend went braless and she now has two spaniel ears hanging down her front

Do your ears hang low
Do they wobble to and fro
Can you tie them in knot
Can you tie them in a bow
Can you throw them over you shoulder
Like a continental soldier
Do your ears hang low?

Depends on the size of your bust, I think a woman can get away with it if she's blessed with a fairly flat chest, I say blessed out of envy, I would prefer less. When I broke my arm and found it difficult to do the back clasp up, I bought some without fasteners from M&S which I can pull upwards up the body. Sometimes I wear those around the house. I wouldn't go out without bra personally, I think flatter chested women could. I understand the desire not to wear one, especially if an evening, I'm sure we inflate as the day progresses.

I saw an ad pop up for body and bra. I googled and found the online site and bought one, it cost £31. It took a little while to arrive and was immediately the most comfortable bra I have ever worn in my life. That one was the breathable support bra

I now have 4 breathable and 2 support comfort bras which show a little more cleavage

I have removed all my other bras, Miss Mary, empriente etc. They are washed and stored in a drawer but I will be getting rid of those, I have tested body and bra for over a month and they are so very comfortable. They give a nice shape too. I don`t know I am wearing them

karmalady Tue 25-Nov-25 22:18:03

I see they have a black friday deal, 3 for 2 and I have bought 3 more which I will stash away, I am 40c and bought XL. There is a wide range of fastener hooks, 4 deep and they also supply a good extender which I don`t need to use

I noticed that they have front fastener and a sports bra

A well fitting bra will make any outfit look better.
IMHO Wacoal make the most comfortable bras.
I never go without a bra, I even sleep in one sometimes or I wear a cupped cami.

Same here. No outfit looks good without a good bra. I too wear a bra in bed.
Another advantage ( in my case) is that I don’t have one stretch mark on my chest.

After a mastectomy on one side if I went without a bra I would look very strange indeed!

I wear a scarf anyway to cover my mis-matched boob + one fake one as they never match now my real boob is so floppy anyway!

Toetoe Tue 25-Nov-25 22:25:36

Oh I would have loved to have had small boob's. Mine always were huge and start from under my arms ! I love being bra less at home but never go out without a bra , I have to rush upstairs and re dress if anyone calls . Bra wearing is uncomfortable, even when I'm measured properly and spent a fortune on them . Oh for small boob's

henetha Tue 25-Nov-25 23:29:42

I still wear a bra most days. But I've taken all the wires out of my underwired ones to make them more comfortable. And I often wear those bralet/ sports top things which are really brilliant if you just want some support without feeling too squashed in.

Purplepixie Tue 25-Nov-25 23:46:18

It’s up to you but I hate to see large droopy boobs hanging like pendulums. I prefer wearing a bra but I’ve never had a really comfy one, ever!

BlueBelle Tue 25-Nov-25 23:56:43

Well I didn’t get any stretch marks with three babes but nothing to do with wearing a bra just the luck of the draw
I think we should let our boobs have a rest over night I would never wear one in bed
I leave them done up and just step into them

Never wear one. Except if I have a medical appointment as I always have an ECG .... wouldn't bother me but when I take my top off they seemed a bit astonished that they were roaming free!

Kandinsky Wed 26-Nov-25 09:02:07

I’ve yet to find a bra that offers both comfort and support. Sadly, being quite big busted I have to wear a bra pretty much everyday.

Jojo1950 Wed 26-Nov-25 13:41:03

I feel the same. Bras only on special occasions. Rest of the time no bra. Who cares! I’m 75.

Minnieme Wed 26-Nov-25 13:50:01

I always wear a underwired bra until evening time . Having good support totally transforms your figure. I'm 70 and I am still quite vain I suppose, but each to what suits yourself

Chaitriona Wed 26-Nov-25 13:55:58

I am one of those who wears a stretchy cropped top thingy. In my case from cotton traders. Very comfortable and gives a bit of support. In my youth I didn't wear a bra. But I am much more well endowed now. My daughter says I need to yank them up and I would look better in my clothes. I am sure she is right but does it matter. I would be willing to buy a bra for special occasions only. But I have no idea what size I might be. I know it couldn't be very comfortable. We have to accept.

WelshPoppy Wed 26-Nov-25 14:01:05

As a 36G, can't imagine going without a bra. Much more comfortable in one than without.

hollysteers Wed 26-Nov-25 14:04:10

I’m not very well endowed and in the summer bought M&S t shirts with a bra as part of the t shirt. No straps and now I wear them under a jumper etc for warmth.

I still wear a bra all the time . I got re fitted after losing two and a half stone !.
I wouldn’t consider going braless as I still have boobs . The most comfortable place I have found for bras was bravissimo. Their ultimate comfort bra . It’s not wired but it is supportive
I use it as a sleep bra . Tbh I’ve never had an uncomfortable bra from them in over 20 years!. I wonder if you have been fitted correctly?. Over 95% of us are wearing the wrong size bra !

Ooh....I didnt even know that was possible - ie to remove wires from underwired bras. Duh!

Back in my heyday and I wore underwired plunge bras for my 36C boobs and was fine about my figure - as, in my book the perfect figure is either 34-24-34 or 36-26-36 and I was the second one of those = fine/just fine by me.

But underwires are not the worlds most comfortable bras to wear and I refuse to be uncomfortable any more - and so I moved on some years back to "non wired" ones and I have problems with them because the front panel between breasts is one button too high for the number of buttons or a v-neck jumper that I wear. It's been quite a battle to find non-wired ones that don't show above the v-neck on a jumper - and it has to be v-neck (as that's what suits me - as I'm short and short-neck and need to wear that style to suit me).

So - yep....I need plunge and non-padded (no need for any help there - whatever size I am!) and have been struggling to find unwired bras that match that and arent "old lady" style. So if I can just buy the same bras I always bought when younger and just "whip out the wire" that might do the trick for me. Do you pull it from one end - eg the armpit end? Bear in mind my sewing skills extend to sewing on a button and that's that.

Right now I'm in "rebellion" mode - as I've been wearing 42C bras and refuse pointblank to buy 44C bras and am trying to psyche myself up to "do the diet and get that 36/26/36 figure back again". Should be possible - never had children or even pregnancies - and then I can wear my decent-quality clothes in "my size" - rather than the cheap temporary ones bought until I lose weight. So - right now - I've not worn a bra for weeks - as I refuse to spend my money buying ones in a temporary bigger size. I don't think most people notice the missing bra - though I've had a couple of "looks" from men in my agegroup who have. But I ignore that - as I was surprised to be told I'd got a top button accidentally undone by a woman here who I think was trying to be helpful - and I looked down and thought "Nope - none of them have come undone. I think maybe older women in this area do up one more button than we (southern English) do on blouses - I'm not going to copy that...I'll keep to my number undone as usual" (hence part of why I sometimes need that lower level between boobs that plunge bras have - so as not to have a bit of "massive style bras" showing).

ViceVersa

I am very much a 'well endowed' woman, but it's no bra for me wherever possible - and never when I'm at home. Medical issues make wearing anything tight very uncomfortable for me, so now I've thrown caution - and the bra - to the wind whenever I can get away without wearing one.
And yes, I've had proper bra fittings and even then, it's still uncomfortable for me to wear one for any length of time.

This is me too, ViceVersa. Being well endowed and with a pacemaker, I have experimented with all kinds of bras to find a comfy one. I now only wear one if going out or expecting guests.
