Good morning Mick and all GN's on another very dark but still morning in North Yorkshire. At last I am feeling a little better and in less pain after a horrible day yesterday, where I had to sort of give in and just ignore the many things I wanted to do, and just get through the day , reading my paper and trying not to feel annoyed about my lack of ability to do anything more.
The day hadnt started well anyway, but I had hoped to call in at christmas fairs and so forth, after getting shopping and of course being without the buggy, was going to mean the difficulty of finding somewhere to park that I could manage the walking into the shop from the car etc. It took me so long to struggle through a shower and dressing etc that it was nearly 10.30 before I was even ready to go out. I had collected 3 pairs of trousers to go to the repair day in Thirsk, but then fortunately saw another advert about one in my own town, so decided that as it was only on from 10 =12 I would go there first and chance my arm. If the queue was enormous I could leave it for another time but it would be something positive from the day if I could get that done.
So I creaked my way to the venue, in the pouring rain and gloom, which I think was why there was not a long queue of people, so it turned out to be very useful. You go in and fill in a form and show the person there what you want to be mended or looked at and she looks on her list and sends you to the person most likely to be able to help you and you go to their queue. They also sold coffee and cakes , which helps the local charity too , whilst you sit and wait, so a good idea.
Well, my luck started to change then, as for me fortunately, the sewing expert lady Heather was actually free, so no waiting at all. They had set this group of experts in a craft room, so there were 3 of them. Two men and Heather. The men were doing electrical things and looking at a variety of stuff ranging from a hoover to an electric toothbrush and a little toy ladybird which were not working, and it was interesting to see the range from something that was very simple for them to sort out, to something that took the two of them trying all sorts of things to even get into the innards to deal with.
So I had 3 pairs of trousers with me. One was a thin cotton summer, , brand new pair which I had bought and it had one of those sort of invisible zips. I had only worn it a couple of times and the zip came apart in the middle , which was very annoying. I am a bad mix of having had a mother who was an expert and a perfectionist with sewing, so I was used to well made things and quality sewing. So whilst I could do an ordinary zip if necessary, I knew I would never get this to the level I would want, and they had been waiting for the time a sewing friend could have a look at them. She looked at them and said well the bottom of the zip was the problem and that she could sew across that bit and I could see how that went, so that was that one.
Then I had another much used and useful pair of grey trousers where the waistband button had come away and the actual material had torn. I had moved the button but that meant that the trousers were too loose and I was always having to hitch them up, very annoying. So for that she had her sewing machine and made a very good patch and then was able to return the button to the right place and hey presto , back to useful. The last pair was a new cord pair I had bought in a sale with wide legs, but they were too long and just needed the hem to be shortened. However on your own it is difficult to check the length and pin them up etc. As I no longer have a sewing machine, and needed to wait for my back to allow me to try them on and someone to pin them up etc they had been left of course. So, I went to their ladies and put them on and the expert measured it (much more carefully all the way round than I would have done) and then
she cut them and rehemmed then with great efficiency.
I was very pleased with all she had done, and enjoyed a few lessons about electrical goods watching the other experts. My husband used to be brilliant at all sorts of things, being an engineer and very good at anything he turned his hand to anything. I am reasonably good at sorting things out too, so I could deal with most things, but there is always that one thing that you cant see how to deal with, and of course, any shop you ring up sounds amazed that whatever it is is still being used, so I can see me beginning to make up a list for the next repair cafe.
So , it had not been comfortable sitting on a hard chair there, but worth it to get the jobs done. So it was still raining cats and dogs and miserable, so I gave up on any further thought of going to anything other than Tescos. Got their disability buggy, but whoever had been putting yet more christmas displays up had not even thought about how you get round on the buggy, and there were several times I could not even turn round at all and had to back up that particular aisle and it was extremely annoying . I was very tempted to just go for it and knock the whole thing down, but my pride in my ability to get round would not allow me to do it, but of course more importantly I wouldnt make things difficult for other shoppers. But by the time I had finished I was feeling edgy and short tempered and ratty, so had to make sure I did not take it out on the check out lady, who was very pleasant and helpful. Then a struggle to get to the car and home, where I felt so shattered that I just took the main things in and left the rest of the shopping to get later and was glad to get inside.
That was about it for the day in the way of getting anything done, I just felt so exhausted and in a lot of pain , that it was a case of make some coffee , get the paper, and sit and read and listen to radio 3, which of course cheered the day.
Today I am very grateful to be feeling a bit more with it, and in less pain. By now it is very light, as I have interuppted this as had a phone call, so it looks very clear, cold and still out there. Later I may go mad and just have a walk round the flats to get a bit of exercise, but for now it is a quiet start to the day. The first advent sunday means some lovely music on radio three and of course some marvellous Bach early this morning. I plan to have a very simple meal of good pork sausages and a lovely jacket potato with sweet corn and peas, so not a great deal to do for that, so that I can concentrate on getting dates put on my calendar for december, catch up with paperwork and more importantly putting it away, so hopefully it might look a bit tidier by this evening. Finally yesterday they came and took all the rubbish away that they had left, but did not leave me any new bags for recycling!! So I shall have to ferret down the backs of cupboards to see if there is a spare bag lurking there. Other than that I shall just stick it in any plastic bag I can find and woe betide them if they say they wont take it because it is not their specific bags!
Well whatever I manage to get done will be a bonus after the last few days and will hope to have a bit more energy to do things tomorrow.
Sounds as though you have the same idea Mick , so hope you keep warm and enjoy your day.GrandMattie hope your posies go well and I will of course say a prayer for MD and wish better health for all struggling. Pantglas hope you got off ok and were not delayed by all these problems with the planes. Karmalady hope that you do decide to get the tree out and enjoy it, and that perhaps you will find something good at the stalls when you go out. I will look up yesterdays post and read some that I missed, as I didnt really look at the computer yesterday, and find out what I missed. Hoping that everyone can have a good day and enjoy whatever it brings. Wishing for better health and something cheering in the day to all
