I’ve just made my bread sauce ready to freeze for CD.

It occurred to me that this is a love or hate kind of dish.

My mother only ever added water or milk to a packet🤮.

The real thing is so delicious.

Do you love it or hate it?

I once went out to eat at a carvery. I was pleased to see a dish of bread sauce so smothered my meat with it, only to discover that it was horseradish, which I hate!

never tasted it , never fancied it

Well, I'm on team, yeah, yippee, huzzah!
We all love bread sauce, oh, apart from DH. Now please don't have a fit of the vapours but I actually like the packet-stuff, it delicious & I make mine with vegan milk so that I can stuff my face with it. They other-lot (The carnivores) will tolerate this or I wouldn't blooming well make it ....open the packet.
It's lovely with Brussels & mint sauce too. Together with the gravy & a bit of Yorkshire pud, it's the little stodgy- star of the whole meal. Oh, that & the sherry.

I love it! I make it like kittylester does, finely chopped onion and no cloves but loads of butter. Any left over bread gets blitzed and kept in the freezer for bread sauce. Whenever I eat cooked chicken I make the sauce. I often have it instead of gravy. Any left over I use with chopped chicken and sometimes cheese, as a pie filling with pastry or mash topping.
Feeling hungry now!

Yes , in fact I’m making it to go with a three bird roast of pheasant, mallard and partridge on Saturday as I’m having my sister for “ our “Christmas” - get together as we aren’t seeing each other over Christmas.

I think it goes best of all with game.

*Mokryna*, I put grated nutmeg in lots of savoury things especially if they are cheese based.

Bread sauce freezes well.

ditto re nutmeg ( freshly grated) in savoury foods. The wonder of nutmeg is that you don't add enough to be identifiable by scent or smell as " there's nutmeg in this". Instead, it secretly/ magically intensifies the flavour of the other ingredients.

A little nutmeg grated into fried mushrooms, mmmmm

Substitute wallpaper paste.

Love it. It was a tradition and DH became a convert. However, like others have said, I only like the home made one, shop bought is horrible. Allira, I use a similar recipe. It is from the old Good Housekeeping recipe book.

Love it the way Mum made it. I gave up after a while because it was only me who ate it. One son-in-law makes it from scratch and we’re going there for Christmas dinner. Yum!

Love it, and I think I’d have a family riot on my hands if I didn’t make it at Christmas (Delia’s recipe, which is the best, imho). Far from tasteless, and even further from “wet bread”.

I’m also very partial to a proper bread and butter pudding. Not on Christmas Day though. grin

Avalon how I make it is so simple I chopped my onions and boil till soft then throw away the water add milk and add crumbled bread not too new few days old no crusts and add pepper and sauce to toast easy peasy
Terribull it’s not that kind of sauce we always have cranberry as well and it’s not lumpy because its just bit thicker than cheese or parsley sauce

My Mum used to infuse a whole onion studded with cloves in the milk used for bread sauce, together with a bay leaf and some peppercorns.

I love it the way I make it. Soften chopped onion in butter, add creamy milkand boil up to infuse the onion flavour. Leave the onion in! Stir in the breadcrubs and mix up, adding salt and black pepper to taste.

NO CLOVES. They remind me of my childhood dentist surgery.

TillyTrotter Wed 17-Dec-25 22:24:03

I don’t doubt the wonderful recipes passed on in families for bread sauce,
but it has never featured on our Christmas dinner table.
I like a fruit sauce with Turkey - either cranberry or apple.

Primrose53 Wed 17-Dec-25 21:51:03

Couldn’t imagine Christmas dinner without my homemade bread sauce. I do the cloves in onion, fresh breadcrumbs, bay leaf etc and it is heavenly! I went out to a pre Xmas lunch once and it was very obviously packet bread sauce …… 🤮🤮

MiniMoon Wed 17-Dec-25 21:47:19

I've made it the traditional way with the clove studded onion. These days when I make bread sauce I add ground mace and a bay leaf to the milk to infuse.
We all love it at our house.

kittylester Wed 17-Dec-25 21:40:06

Those of you who think bread sauce is tasteless haven't tried the real deal obviously.

Deedaa Wed 17-Dec-25 21:28:38

My mother used to make it every year, with cloves stuck in the onion. I love it, but I haven't made any for years. When my daughter was little the only part of Christmas dinner she would eat was turkey and breadsauce.

BlueBelle Wed 17-Dec-25 21:13:21

I just always made it how my Nan made it I wouldn’t consider a packet thingy or a delia or anyone else My Nan never fancied it up with cloves or any other flavourings in it just simply bread onions butter and milk
I love it

tanith Wed 17-Dec-25 20:52:43

Totally tasteless and is like wallaper paste blurgh!!

Redrobin51 Wed 17-Dec-25 20:50:24

Hate it. Seems absolutely tasteless to me.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Wed 17-Dec-25 19:51:18

Not for me either.
I’m with whoever upthread who described it as wet bread. Bleugh!

Esmay Wed 17-Dec-25 19:27:09

I love bread sauce and make it the traditional way by studding an onion with cloves and infusing ìt in warm milk .
I add salt ,pepper,a little butter ,cream and bread crumbs from stale bread .

gentleshores Wed 17-Dec-25 18:28:02

I can't eat bread so haven't had it for decades. It wasn't a traditional thing in our family. It was more the stuffing that was traditional.

Cabbie21 Wed 17-Dec-25 18:01:21

Not for me, thanks.

theworriedwell Wed 17-Dec-25 17:46:09

I love it, no one else does. Dont know if I can be bothered to make it for just me.
