I’ve just made my bread sauce ready to freeze for CD.

It occurred to me that this is a love or hate kind of dish.

My mother only ever added water or milk to a packet🤮.

The real thing is so delicious.

Do you love it or hate it?

I’m a hater, sorry.

love it, a I make it from scratch with herb infuse milk, cream, crumbs, butter.

To me, turkey is just an excuse to eat bread sauce, two
different stuffings, cranberry sauce, gravy and pigs in blankets.

Yuk!

SueDonim Wed 17-Dec-25 14:40:17

Love it, but only my home made version. I made the mistake of buying it one year. I’d rather go without!

Not a lover of bread sauce but one Xmas we had family who requested it.
On the day, they asked if it was from M & S? I took great pride in saying I had made it (first time ever but cheers to Good Food site!) Daughter divorced that Sil not long after!

Astitchintime Wed 17-Dec-25 14:49:18

Absolutely NOT! Chuck it in the bin with the cauliflower cheese………..YUK!!!!!

25Avalon Wed 17-Dec-25 14:52:38

Have you got a recipe please? It’s not something I usually make but dh asks for!

TerriBull Wed 17-Dec-25 14:54:09

I can't say, I've never eaten bread sauce, we tend to have Cranberry shock I'm wondering if I'm unique in saying that here on GN. Generally I'm not a fan of white lumpy food, although I like cauliflower cheese.

Smileless2012 Wed 17-Dec-25 14:55:22

Always have it with turkey and chicken and make my own.

Shinamae Wed 17-Dec-25 14:57:22

Absolutely love it

Poppyred Wed 17-Dec-25 15:01:44

Couldn’t eat turkey without bread sauce! It is from a packet though. 🤭

BlueBelle Wed 17-Dec-25 15:06:07

Avalon how I make it is so simple I chopped my onions and boil till soft then throw away the water add milk and add crumbled bread not too new few days old no crusts and add pepper and sauce to toast easy peasy
Terribull it’s not that kind of sauce we always have cranberry as well and it’s not lumpy because its just bit thicker than cheese or parsley sauce

BlueBelle Wed 17-Dec-25 15:06:49

To taste not to toast…. whoops

henetha Wed 17-Dec-25 15:07:21

Can't stand it I'm afraid. Wish i did but it's horrible.

sodapop Wed 17-Dec-25 15:15:48

I hate it but my husband loves it. He makes his own from scratch tooo

Grandmabatty Wed 17-Dec-25 15:17:51

I make my own with cream. It's a Delia recipe and I've made it for years.

Ladyleftfieldlover Wed 17-Dec-25 15:22:31

Love it and make it from scratch every year! I use freshly grated nutmeg rather than cloves.

swampy1961 Wed 17-Dec-25 15:25:09

Love it! But I'm the only one who eats it!!

kittylester Wed 17-Dec-25 15:26:19

I love it and was the official breadsauce maker for the family but since becoming gf that has stopped. Have given up trying to make a decent gf one.

They make their own now but to my recipe.

My recipe is
Very finely chopped onion
Blitzed fairly old bread
Milk
Black pepper - lots.
Lots of butter.
Cream and nutmeg to finish.

The traditional recipe had milk infused with a clove studded onion. The onion and cloves are removed and then the milk used.

None of us are fans of cloves though so i 'invented' this..

mokryna Wed 17-Dec-25 15:38:42

I make bread sauce the traditional way as kittylester noted however with cloves, nutmeg reminds me of a dessert, milk rice pudding and not too much of the black pepper.
Maybe others find it tasteless because it hasn’t stood long enough with the onion and cloves.
My French family love the bread sauce, as they do brandy butter.

winterwhite Wed 17-Dec-25 15:38:49

Tut. I never allowed my children to say yuk about anything that other people were going to eat.
If I had I’d have said it about bread sauce. Therefore never made in my house which was bad luck on everyone else I suppose.
My mother made it every year, and she stuck cloves in an onion I remember.

vegansrock Wed 17-Dec-25 15:41:03

I’m on team yuk.

JenniferEccles Wed 17-Dec-25 15:41:13

I love it so long as it’s a properly made, home made one.
Haven’t had it for a few years though.
