My late husband had a real talent for helping sick and/or injured animals and birds. One evening, many years ago, arriving home after an evening out, we noticed that a sparrow we were caring for, still too newly hatched to have feathers, was looking decidedly ‘dead’. He was freezing cold, but was still breathing, just! My husband quickly popped him in my bra to warm him up!
That little sparrow lived to be 9 years old! (In the wild, they are lucky to survive for a couple of years, so my bra and its contents saved a life! Bet not many people can say that!)
To put people’s’ minds at rest:-
We knew it was, and still is, illegal to keep wild birds, so on finding him, we immediately phoned the authorities who told us that, as there was no way the bird would survive, they would make a note of it but would not be following it through. Little did they know! That little bird thrived and eventually spent most of his time out of his cage. He had the run of whatever room we were in, and loved watching tv snuggled on my husband’s shoulder!
Strange thing was, when he first came to us, and we were trying to get him to eat, he totally refused bird seed. Nothing would persuade him to eat it. In desperation, just to get food down him, we fed him with bits of our food - bread, chicken, dry cereals, etc and he lapped those up. So for the whole nine years, he ate only our food! Crazy bird!
Just to say Thank you 💐
