Nightmare shopping trip!

Family coming on NY Day so thought I’d get ahead with shopping.
First, I don’t usually shop at Waitrose, so hadn’t realised you need a pound coin for the trolley, and I didn’t have one, so had to make do with 2 heavy baskets.

Second, about to leave - couldn’t find my car keys! Searched bag and pockets in vain! Beginning to panic, I retraced my steps, no luck, eventually asked at Customer Services whether they’d been handed in.
No.
Eventually realised that my heavy bunch of keys had managed to fall through a small hole in my pocket (I didn’t know there was a hole) and were in the lining.
Phew!

Next, found that someone had parked an absolutely massive monster of a car so close to mine, just a few inches away, that I couldn’t get in, had to clamber in from the other side.

Then, trying to reverse out, with the monster protruding from the space far more than any normal car, and the tiny space between us - I must have performed half a dozen manoeuvres before some nice chap came (shaking his head at the monster!) and helped guide me out.
Was I glad to get home!!

We try to use the trolley coins or sometimes my son has a £1 coin in car for if petrol buying runs over by a few pence. But before xmas i went to go in supermarket first whilst my son collected me something from a different shop nearby..I didnt have a £1 or trolley coin- but a very kind lady who had just returned her trolley gave me her £1.I tried to refuse but she insisted.& i thanked her gratefully..we havent been out since christmas day but when i go supermarket again i will pass the kindness forward by donating it to the kind homeless man who usually sits outside our main Aldi in town.He has a trolley coin also and will cheerfully use it to help out anyone that finds themselves without a coin.

I'm intrigued as to which supermarket you usually go to where you don't need a pound coin? I thought they all do.

Always keep a token on your keyring.

In my local area only Tesco, Iceland and Lidl need a coin. I keep a blue Tesco token in my purse which fits like a trolley coin, but recently they have changed the size of the blue tokens. Some are a larger diameter and others, the smaller diameter but thicker so they don't fit. Ehankfully I still nave one that does, I often don't have a pound coin as I always pay by card.
I once had to ask at customer services as someone pinched my trolley while I was shopping! If they stole it for the £1 coin they would have been disappointed with the blue token!
Before I lost weight I sometimes was unable to get in my car due to someone's bad parking but it hasn't happened for a long time. I never thought of asking customer services to put out a call. It wouldn't help in some car parks anyway as the driver could be shopping elsewhere.
I shop little and often now and usually use a basket.

I feel your pain Witzend, but at least you didn’t lock your car keys inside the car as I once did. I won’t bore anyone with the details as I posted it when it happened. Didn’t your Waitrose have one of those plastic baskets on wheels which are very handy and no pound required.

Jojo1950 Tue 30-Dec-25 14:01:30

Waitrose would have opened a trolley free of charge if you had asked them.

Not as much of a nightmare as having the Boiler pack up at Christmas, I'm just finding out how useless the British workman is.

Janetashbolt Tue 30-Dec-25 13:52:06

the glass plate in our combi microwave broke Sunday before Christmas, tried to get to Lakeside costco to buy another, queue round the block so tried Currys, got one to take home after fighting for parking space. Glass plate on that one broke on Boxing day had to take it back to Lakeide Saturday after Christmas. More parking fighting BUT must says Currys just gave us an exchange without hassle but I will NEVER go to Lakeside again between November and January......

No £1 needed at my local Waitrose?

Jess20 Tue 30-Dec-25 13:40:57

Most supermarkets will lend you a coin or token if you haven't got one for the trolleys, Sainsbury's gave me a £1 coin yesterday and I returned it when I finished with the trolley 😊

I shop at our huge Asda, a fairly large local Tesco and a medium sized local Waitrose and none of them need a pound coin these days. It's only our local Lidl that still does that.

Some days just seem to be like that, a sequence of minor catastrophes.

I don't think that most supermarket carparks were designed to accommodate the armoured tanks some people drive.

The pound coin thing varies a lot.
My Waitrose and Tesco don't need one but Sainsbury's Lidl and Morrisons do.
I've been given tokens at both Sainsbury's and Lidl in the past.
Just ask at "customer services"

Not a good day though!
Poor you!

I did think of customer services, but there was nobody there, and someone else was waiting, so after a few minutes I just opted for two baskets.

Your lost keys reminds me of the time my husband nearly brought Gatwick Airport to a standstill. When we went through security he kept setting the alarms off. Coat off, pockets searched, shoes off, went through it all several times, while the alarm kept going off and the queue behind us got longer. In the end he found his keys in a secret pocket in his coat. It was a new coat and he'd forgotten how many pockets it had.

My DD has a special key which fits supermarket trolleys, so she never needs a pound coin.

You can also buy coin-shaped tokens, charity ones, which fit the trolleys. They can also clip on to your key ring.

Sounds like a horrible shopping trip Witzend I hate it when things start going wrong like that, I get all hot and bothered and make things worse generally.
Bet you were glad to be home safely.

Cabbie21 Mon 29-Dec-25 17:05:20

I’m lucky to live very close to an Aldi, so I shop little and often, on foot, just buying what I can carry. I use a basket, not a trolley, so I don’t buy too much to carry home.
I hate big supermarkets. It takes too long to get round. Why do we need so much choice?
I hate parking even more, especially getting hemmed in by a monster vehicle.

Sarnia Mon 29-Dec-25 16:57:16

Customer services would have helped with £1 for the trolley. As for parking next to the ubiquitous tractors, I feel your pain. Supermarkets need to redesign their car parks to allow for the much wider cars and for those of use who drive a small vehicle.
Waitrose do have lovely food so I hope you will get your just reward when you tuck in to your treats.

Mollygo Mon 29-Dec-25 16:50:29

Sainsbury’s and Asda have always been really helpful if you can’t access a trolley. It’s worth asking even at Waitrose.

Oreo Mon 29-Dec-25 16:42:13

Stores vary about needing a pound coin, I always have a trolley token in my pocket.

Granmarderby10 Mon 29-Dec-25 16:30:56

There are a few, usually the really big stores in the middle of nowhere-so to speak. Not so easy to steal.

Witzend Mon 29-Dec-25 16:27:54

TBH I rarely do such a big shop any more - I usually buy little and often, and take the bus.
Having said that, for ages my local Asda’s trolleys didn’t need pound coins, only suddenly, they did!

So I asked why the change.
Answer, trolleys were being stolen by the dozen at night - presumably for the metal. Thieves were coming in lorries and stealing them.

What an experience witzend. Hope you’ve got some feet up time now.

A real benefit of a blue badge is the pleasure of disabled parking bays. Plenty of door opening space. Having said that I’d rather I didn’t need one.

We have in the past asked shop staff to put out a call to request a too close car is moved. Usually a grumpy person has appeared muttering about awkward people. We ignored them.

Waitrose here doesn’t demand a coin for a trolley, Asda, Lidl and Aldi do. The rest don’t. It must vary by area.
