Nightmare shopping trip!

Family coming on NY Day so thought I’d get ahead with shopping.
First, I don’t usually shop at Waitrose, so hadn’t realised you need a pound coin for the trolley, and I didn’t have one, so had to make do with 2 heavy baskets.

Second, about to leave - couldn’t find my car keys! Searched bag and pockets in vain! Beginning to panic, I retraced my steps, no luck, eventually asked at Customer Services whether they’d been handed in.
No.
Eventually realised that my heavy bunch of keys had managed to fall through a small hole in my pocket (I didn’t know there was a hole) and were in the lining.
Phew!

Next, found that someone had parked an absolutely massive monster of a car so close to mine, just a few inches away, that I couldn’t get in, had to clamber in from the other side.

Then, trying to reverse out, with the monster protruding from the space far more than any normal car, and the tiny space between us - I must have performed half a dozen manoeuvres before some nice chap came (shaking his head at the monster!) and helped guide me out.
Was I glad to get home!!

You have my sympathy. That does sound a real nightmare.

The fruits of your shopping trip will be enjoyed NYDay.

Some days everything seems to conspire against you Witzend.
Monster cars become ever more popular and often the drivers don’t park them well on car parks.
I imagined our local supermarket would be pillaged so I did an online order from Ocado which was delivered at 8 a.m. today.
Don’t want to sound smug but everything was available, no subs.

TillyTrotter Mon 29-Dec-25 14:27:30

I’m glad you found your keys 🔑

Waitrose car parks are always filled with huge gas guzzlers so let that be a warning to you😁

I'm intrigued as to which supermarket you usually go to where you don't need a pound coin? I thought they all do.

No, ours don't, at least Waitrose and Tesco don't, only Lidl.

I use Waitrose, Tesco, Lidl and Sainsburys locally. None of them need a pound coin - thank goodness as I no longer carry cash!

These things are sent to try us!

I cnt remember the last time I physically went t a supermarket. Crowds, queues, snotty nosed kids underfoot. Horrendous places. And after carrying all that shopping you get to the boring jb of putting it all away. Putting away shopping is one of the weekly chores I detest.

You need to frequent a better class of supermarket! 😂

Hving had deliveries during lockdowns, I like to see what I'm choosing now.
Yes, we do have to handle it too many times, into the trolley, out of the trolley, into the bags, the car, out of the car, put it away.
Then take it out to cook it.

AmberGran Mon 29-Dec-25 15:53:36

Allira If you use one of the scanners at Sainsbury or Waitrose (don't know about other supermarkets) it's just into the bags, into the car, out of the car and put away. Except when you get picked for a rescan....

Doesn't matter where we shop or where we park there are always monster cars around. There were three in the hospital car park this morning and not one of them was parked properly in the space.

Allira Mon 29-Dec-25 15:59:03

Yes, I've seen the scanners at the entrance AmberGran, might try one. We'd probably be targeted for a rescan, DH puts things in the trolley when I'm not looking. .

The Waitrose I use, trollies don't require a pound coin, Aldi, right next door does. Commiserations about the humongous tank parked too close to yours. They're a scourge of the car park.

What an experience witzend. Hope you’ve got some feet up time now.

A real benefit of a blue badge is the pleasure of disabled parking bays. Plenty of door opening space. Having said that I’d rather I didn’t need one.

We have in the past asked shop staff to put out a call to request a too close car is moved. Usually a grumpy person has appeared muttering about awkward people. We ignored them.

Waitrose here doesn’t demand a coin for a trolley, Asda, Lidl and Aldi do. The rest don’t. It must vary by area.

hollysteers Mon 29-Dec-25 16:16:38

My DD has a special key which fits supermarket trolleys, so she never needs a pound coin.

Witzend Mon 29-Dec-25 16:27:54

TBH I rarely do such a big shop any more - I usually buy little and often, and take the bus.
Having said that, for ages my local Asda’s trolleys didn’t need pound coins, only suddenly, they did!

So I asked why the change.
Answer, trolleys were being stolen by the dozen at night - presumably for the metal. Thieves were coming in lorries and stealing them.

Granmarderby10 Mon 29-Dec-25 16:30:56

There are a few, usually the really big stores in the middle of nowhere-so to speak. Not so easy to steal.

Oreo Mon 29-Dec-25 16:42:13

Stores vary about needing a pound coin, I always have a trolley token in my pocket.

Mollygo Mon 29-Dec-25 16:50:29

Sainsbury’s and Asda have always been really helpful if you can’t access a trolley. It’s worth asking even at Waitrose.

Sarnia Mon 29-Dec-25 16:57:16

Customer services would have helped with £1 for the trolley. As for parking next to the ubiquitous tractors, I feel your pain. Supermarkets need to redesign their car parks to allow for the much wider cars and for those of use who drive a small vehicle.
Waitrose do have lovely food so I hope you will get your just reward when you tuck in to your treats.

Cabbie21 Mon 29-Dec-25 17:05:20

I’m lucky to live very close to an Aldi, so I shop little and often, on foot, just buying what I can carry. I use a basket, not a trolley, so I don’t buy too much to carry home.
I hate big supermarkets. It takes too long to get round. Why do we need so much choice?
I hate parking even more, especially getting hemmed in by a monster vehicle.

sodapop Mon 29-Dec-25 21:12:16

Sounds like a horrible shopping trip Witzend I hate it when things start going wrong like that, I get all hot and bothered and make things worse generally.
Bet you were glad to be home safely.

You can also buy coin-shaped tokens, charity ones, which fit the trolleys. They can also clip on to your key ring.
