Ban Fireworks!

*M0nica*, they cause untold misery to animals every year, but they also cause a great deal of anxiety and stress to some people too, especially people with PTSD and some with autism, etc.
A friend of mine has an ex-army veteran son and she was horrified the first time after he came home when there were fireworks going off outside and she found him a sobbing wreck hiding under their kitchen table. You can get silent fireworks now - why can't they use them instead? I genuinely believe they should be completely banned for sale to the general public and only permitted for organised displays on certain days of the year.

I have no problem with the sale of fireworks being restricted. I appreciate that for some people and animals they are distessing, but it is the responisbility of the owner of the animal or the person to protect themselves.

We are becoming a society where everyone is protected from everything. I live very near some church bells, that ring the quarters 24/7. Should I ask them for the bells to be banned because Christmas day peel was mind splittingly loud because loud noises of all kinds distress me (and they do).

What about all the dogs that attack people? Wouldn't it be safer to ban all dogs. Another solution to the problem.

It’s our first NYE in our new home, the previous occupants told us a neighbour had a professional display each NYE.
It was outstanding, we stood and watched from the bifold doors, didn’t even need coats.
It was the best display I have ever seen.

It has already started, Rosie, thank goodness. Certain areas in some towns were designated 'firework free'. Haven't seen anything yet about how that worked out. But that's a good beginning.

Also, why not have 'soundless' fireworks.
Would have to google it, but I think some countries may already be ahead of the game on this.

But you chose to buy a house near a church - that's no different to someone who chooses to buy a house next door to a pub and then complains about the noise. Anyway, I'm out of here now. Like I said, give me animals over people any day of the week.

My brother was that sort of idiot. Thankfully, he grew up eventually.

Animals have died due to fireworks. Two horses died after being panicked by fireworks. Sheep have aborted their lambs.
Someone threw a firework into the road almost causing a serious accident.
For some people's little bit of fun there have been serious accidents. Irresponsible people are using explosives and it needs to be stopped.

People die from the side effects of fireworks. People mean more to than animals.

And my son was hurt by somebody’s dog.
A number of people have been killed

Obviously some people’s enjoyment of pets is more important than the cost to others?

If that’ argument applies to one in supporting a ban, it also applies to the other doesn’t it?

I'm going to put my tin hat on here but we don't ban things because some people struggle with them...(if this was the case we should start with Alcohol probably.)

I have every sympathy for people with PTSD but people have this for all sorts of reasons - the specific sound of stirring tea, the sounds of wiping of feet on a doormat, the smell of a barbecue. Lots of people have things that, because of their past experience, terrify them.

(These are examples of fears I know people have lived with).

It is just a spurious argument, completely meaningless.

I wouldn’t do that.

You see I appreciate that some people like things that I don’t like, so I wouldn’t want to ban something that gave them pleasure just to suit my opinion.

Oh well you’re entitled to sign the petition.

I hope the person who’s worded it is more logical and has put forward better arguments than the emotional ones here that rationally can apply to a multitude of things.

All lorries
All buses are potentially dangerous.
All dogs are potentially dangerous.

So are chain saws, socks, pyjamas, clothing of all kinds according to A&E statistics.

They seem continuous round here, every celebration you
can think of, it used to be just bonfire night and maybe new year. It should be restricted to one day for every celebration but it wont because some people are making a lot of money from them..

All those things you mentioned MOnica are necessary.
We need transport as life would become difficult without it. We also need clothing items.
Fireworks are NOT necessary.

That some people have PTSD is not relevant here.
That is my point.

I hate fireworks, full stop, but particularly when various pets/animals are terrified of them.

These awful terrorist tools arrived in the UK from China via Europe, with the first display at King Henry 7 wedding in 1486. Then, of course that silly little man, Guy Fawkes and his band of bumbling men in 1605.

I well remember when I was 7 and at a neighbour's display. I stood there frozen with fear as various bangs and whizzes and bombers went off, then some ''adult'' idiot put a sparkler in my hand, it scared me to death, and I said 'I DON'T LIKE IT!, Then I threw it on the ground and the 'adult'' snapped' ''it's only s firework, grow up''.

Grow up? I was 7!

I ran off in fits of tears and terror, then I was branded as a spoiled brat and all kinds of other stuff.

I absolutely detest them!

TheWeirdOneAgain - I am sorry you are scared of fireworks, being scared of anything is a truly awful feeling. When I tell people I am terrified of dogs and can't go to their house if they have a dog, go to most cafés and pubs, can't walk along a beach or in the woods because of dogs I am told to grow up. I don't think 99% of dog owners whinging about their pet being scared of fireworks ever think about that.

I love fireworks, always have.

We have had dogs (until my allergy became severe), cats and horses. None of which were bothered by the noise or lights.

What are more of a problem, particularly with horses and other animals in fields are those blessed lanterns with tea light candles, and of course balloons all cause serious damage to the stomach’s and even death to inquisitive munchers

I went to a house party on NYE and was surprised that so many fireworks were going off from 8pm. It was as if people couldn't wait till midnight, so set them off and then went to bed?
When midnight came there were hardly any. Maybe it was the freezing cold weather?

Even so, I don't mind that people spend their money on providing me with free spectacle- so no, I wouldn't ban them!

When I was young, New Years Day at midnight was marked by all the church bells ringing in the New Year.

We opened our door and listened to them ringing out over the fields.

No fireworks to mar their lovely sound.
