crazy dieting in the new year

used to be a thing in the New Year to start a diet (after all the goodies had been eaten up!)
Thinking back there were some awful diets and I remember Mum doing a few too!
New Year used to be the Special K diet; two bowls of cereal and one small meal. did it work well not for me!
PLJ the pure lemon juice stuff which were taken in water first thing and instead of meals
Cider vinegar instead of meals like the lemon juice
Mum used to have Limmits they were like tiny biscuits and you had one instead of a meal
can you remember any crazy diet fads

'Diets' are why Slimming World and Weight Watchers are still in business after decades and doing very well thank you.
They never work, any of them.

I beg to differ.
I lost nearly three stone doing Weight Watchers about seven years ago. Not only have I kept it off but I lost another stone slowly during last year by low carbing.
I’m exactly where I want to be now but I’ll always thank WW for guiding me at a time in my life when my willpower needed some help.

Perhaps the best diet of all is the simplest one which I read somewhere.

Eat less, move more.

Diets don’t work, long term. You can crash diet but in the end it all goes back on.

Crash diets may not work but following a long term plan which leads to healthier eating and lifestyle changes DOES.

I've always done well on weightwatchers but it is about portion sizing and damage limitation - so if you eat a chocolate bar you need to compensate in some way for that, so dust for dinner (I am joking)

but henetha is right, it's about eating (and drinking) les and moving more smile

lets all be good

The only one that seemed to work for me was intermittent fasting. I did the 16:8 version. Of course as soon as I stopped back the weight came.

I’m still doing this, but to a different time structure
I don’t have anything at all until 1130 in the morning and then I have a glass of Kiefer then I eat more or less what I want until 930 in the evening and that’s when I stop
Since May I have lost one stone 6 lb..

That sounds pretty good Shinamae. I might try it but maybe not those timings. I wake very early and go to bed early so am not eating up till 9.30. maybe I could try 10- 7? Don't know. I would want to do it properly so will have to have a think.
In other diet related news, I have bought the makings of overnight oats and also some organic apples cider vinegar.

What is Kiefer please?

I'm on the Oreo diet so far today.

Having spent the morning prepping food for family coming tomorrow, I couldn't face making myself lunch so I had two mine pies.

I always think February is a better month to think about eating less, more healthily and 🤞 weight loss. January is for eating up all those things we didn't get round to eating at Christmas.

Allira Sat 03-Jan-26 14:12:10

two mine pies.
Mince pies, but they were mine, not Oreo's.

JaneJudge Sat 03-Jan-26 14:14:02

I've got 3 mince pies left and no one else eats them. They are Cartwright and Butler one as well sad

Aveline Sat 03-Jan-26 14:28:14

Kefir? Maw

I do 16:8 fasting, and try very hard with low cardio. In the last 10 years I have kept my weight steady.

That’s my downfall. I’m a human dustbin! 😂

Lovemylife Sat 03-Jan-26 18:30:42

My mum used to eat Energen rolls - sort of crusty and no substance.
I tried the grapefruit and egg diet to keep my sister company but only managed to stick to it till lunchtime.
Suggested my late DH do a clock change diet. Try to lose weight in the summer and stay the same in winter. Who wants to diet when it’s cold. And what’s dry January all about wine

But diets are merely suggesting different ways to Eat less.

Personally I would never start to try to lose weight in the new year. There is still too much food and rink left over from Christmas, then there is al the c;earing up. Leave it until February when some of the extra weight gain will have gone from natural causes and you can concentrate on regular, sensible eating.

There’s a programme on Ch5 7pm Wednesday called The 1970’s diet which I’m going to watch!
