Twelfth Night- is it really bad luck?

I have been very ill for most of December and so far this month too. Luckily I did get my Christmas decorations up before I fell ill. The problem is that I'm not well enough to take them down and I have nobody to do it for me. Is it really bad luck to leave them up after twelfth night? I can't see me getting them down anytime soon and I could do without yet more bad luck.

Decorations.

Just superstition , so wait and enjoy them until you are ready to take them down.
Get well soon.

My grandmother was superstitious. She was born in 1890 and left school at 12.
If you were born anytime after that you should know there’s no such thing as luck.

Mine are always down before new year ...but I don't think it matters whatever you choose

My decorations are outside . I usually decorate the whole of the front garden and the back .
Thus year my efforts are pathetic .
They were late going up as I felt really ill and was sick right through Christmas .
If I don't feel like taking the lot down tomorrow I'll just remove one symbolically.

No, OP of course it isn’t.
No more than Friday 13th, black cats, spilling salt or walking under ladders.
Thee are superstitions and for every person who comes along with anecdotes about how they courted disaster, there are 99 people who take no notice and life goes on.

Thank you all so much for your kind words and reassurance. My decs will be staying up until I feel better. As you have pointed out they do cheer me up. If anyone says anything I will tell them that it was good enough for Queen Elizabeth so its good enough for me 🎄🎄🎄

That’s the spirit! Just do you! And you’ll have the benefit of the cheerfulness! Get well soon Beneath flowers

The other handy thing about leaving the decorations up is they disguise so much dust! Leave them up!

Nannee49 Sun 04-Jan-26 15:50:41

For years and years I faithfully followed customs from only taking the decorations down on twelfth night to adopting the Spanish tradition of San Silvestre of 12 grapes on the strokes of Midnight at New Year and honestly can't remember a year when any of it was beneficial!

Glad you've decided to leave them for now beneath and hope your health improves soonflowers

Don't worry about the timing. So many folk around the world use different dates. Enjoy them just now, and hope you get well soon. 🎄

I find the putting up and taking down of Christmas decorations is becoming more of a struggle each year, especially if you’re ill or not too supple. Although I love the festive look and sparkling lights, I have pared mine back a bit. I’m personally not superstitious about taking them down early. It’s just a job that’s needs doing whenever you feel up to it.

Get well soon and do t worry one jot about your decs!

I’m a bit worried that you’re so poorly and have no one around to help you flowers

I was very struck when, in Sydney once, a taxi driver explained that the lights on trees were kept up all year as the locals had decided that they were, 'Just lovely'. They were indeed. Good on yah!

My mum was a stickler for traditions like this, and was really superstitious. I don't think it matters two hoots when you take your decorations down. I haven't done mine yet. But I only put half of them up this year due to a nasty cold bug.
The most important thing is that you get better, very soon I hope. Best wishes. flowers

No it isn't bad luck, nor is taking them down before 12th night. We always take ours down on New Years day.

Hope you feel better soon flowers.

flappergirl Sun 04-Jan-26 11:30:37

You can leave them up until Candlemas with impunity OP, which is 2nd February. This was common practice at one time.

Shelflife Sun 04-Jan-26 11:29:13

No it is most definitely not bad luck. Leave your decorations in place till you are well and truly better!
Hope you get better son. 💐🌸🌹

... leave them up until - as Witzend points out - the end of the Christmas season (Candlemas), 2nd February.

They might cheer you up a bit for one thing - when they do come down, the place can look a tad dull and cheerless.

More importantly, it's not a good idea to do anything that you feel you can't handle if you are unwell.

... but, what are you doing for things like shopping, cleaning, etc? Is there anyone who can help you at all? Would it be worth giving Adult Social Services a ring - I don't mean for them to take your decorations down, but for a little help if you think you might be unwell for some time?

I hope you start to feel better soon, it's no fun being poorly and alone I'm sure. flowers

I don't think there is any link between preferences for things like leaving up decorations and bad luck. What I think isn't really relevant though. If you do believe in superstitions, OP, ask yourself who or what would be orchestrating the bad luck, and tell them that you are leaving them up for a reason that would satisfy them.

If the bad luck bringer is benign you could simply explain that you are too ill to do it yet, and if it is malign you could say that the decorations are early for Spring, or that you have declared them non-christmas ones that are there to make the house look pretty in the winter months or until you are well enough to take them down.

Don't worry, just be kind to yourself. I hope you feel better very soon.

Most peoples lives are a mixture of good and bad. In my opinion, this is unaffected by when they take their Christmas decorations down. Take them down when you are ready. It won't affect your future one way or another.

fancyflowers Sun 04-Jan-26 10:24:19

You can leave your decorations up as long as you like, there's no bad luck involved.
Get better soon.
