Good morning from a very wet but now snow free Suffolk where we seem to have escaped from most of the storm last night. I hope those of you in other parts of the country,in spite of what looked like awful predictions, are safe and without any damage to your homes.

We ventured out yesterday afternoon in my car,the first time since last Friday and the lanes were ice free. Our cleaners came as planned as did S who is a computer problem solving genius and life seemed like normal.

I hope to visit my dear friend later this morning getting towards the end of her stay for respite and looking forward to going home next week. Her fears about how she will manage are lessening as her mobility improves and her confidence increases.

Thinking of those who are coping with illness themselves or caring for others.

Good morning from Shropshire☃️

Yesterday we drove to Llandudno, watched Miss Saigon and then drove home.Thank goodness we drove straight home as we had just pulled onto the drive and there was an explosion of snow.It is quite deep but rain forecast today so may clear.

Miss Saigon was one of the best productions we have seen although I found the story emotional.

Plans for today are on hold.We usually have the children for a sleepover on a Friday but the snow is too deep for us to get off the drive let alone the road.

We had a call last night to say mum has deteriorated.I am waiting for a call this morning and praying we can get there if we need to.She has rallied before.I will pack a bag and then if we can get there can stay with her.

I am glad olddudders is on the mend and hope others are to.I hope Marydoll is feeling better today🙏🏻

Thoughts to all mountaineers and wishing everyone the best day possible🦩🌻☃️

Good morning, Michael and all GNs from South Yorkshire where it is still dark, but we have snow on the ground. At ten o’clock last night it was really coming down, but it must have turned to rain at some point as I can now see the car again. I shall keep a watching brief as to whether I go out to do my stint at school this afternoon. Hopefully it will have mostly gone by then and be better underfoot.

Have the best day you can folks.

Good morning all from Polmont where it's currently -1° and snowing lightly. There's not much coverage but it looks icy too. Sar I hope you feel better soon. Blue Sapphire my son did a glitter bomb thing for my sixtieth birthday and is still finding glitter and that was over seven years ago! It maybe says more about his hoovering though 😂
Yesterday I achieved little. I pottered about in the morning but went back to bed in the afternoon for a long nap. So my kitchen cleaning didn't happen. I've definitely been hibernating this winter. My body shuts down in the cold. I have an under active thyroid and changes in temperature don't suit me at all.
Today I'm trying to thwart my natural sloth tendency and I'm going out with dd for a coffee. She's picking me up after she's dropped off the boys at school so I'll have to get a move on. Then, depending on how I feel, I will clean those kitchen cupboard doors. I shall water all the house plants too. I have two poinsettias which were given as gifts. Sadly they are dropping leaves. I've never been able to keep poinsettias for long, despite my best efforts. Have a good day all

Good morning from a wet W Kent. Woken up with a bad back, to much sitting around I expect. Not sure I need to go out but plenty to do
Best wishes

Ashcombe Fri 09-Jan-26 07:49:09

Good morning from a very wet Torbay. Our wheelie bin for food recycling seems to have disappeared completely! I expect, being the lightest of the five, it has travelled up the drive out of sight.

Your comment about schools not closing in snow in our day is interesting, madeleine45. My DD2 is Headteacher of a large primary in North Staffs on the edge of the Moorlands. The decision to close is never taken lightly but always based on concern for the safety of children, staff and parents. Although many pupils are local and can walk to school, some of the staff are not. She has to consider if there are enough members of staff able to be in to supervise and if their site is safe under the terms of the Health and Safety at Work Act. Despite snow this week, her school has remained open throughout when others in the county have not.

olddudders relinquished his temporary bed on the recliner and joined me in our bed last night as he is feeling better although still coughing. Yesterday he managed some cooking and helped put away the Christmas decorations.

Take care if you’re in an area of snow and wrap up well wherever you are. 🦩💐❄️🥰🦩

Good morning from a very wet S E Essex, it started raining around 2.30pm yesterday and hasn’t stopped. BBC weather App says it 1° but feels like-8°

I may go to the gym this morning, but will see how my lungs are once I have popped all my pills

Thinking of my dear penpal this morning 😘🙋‍♀️

I hope our GN friends in the eye of the storm are ok 🤞🏻

RosesandLilac Fri 09-Jan-26 07:47:19

Good morning, having been awake between midnight and 6am I am knackered! I did doze eventually for an hour.
It’s very wet here, no snow thank goodness, not particularly windy either. I’ll finish my coffee then take tiddler out, bigger dog has her dog walker this morning.
Very little planned for today, usual housework and bed change, a flick around with the duster and hopefully DH will vacuum.
I hope you’re all safe after the storm 🌹

ginny Fri 09-Jan-26 07:45:32

Good morning from a wet and windy N.Bucks.
We have nothing particular in the diary today . I’ll make a big pot of sausage and bean casserole, some for tonight and the rest will go in the freezer. Plenty to keep me busy, more cupboard sorting , craft club projects to prepare and some sketching for a challenge I am taking part in. No golf again for DH so he also has a model kit to make.
Wishing all a good day .

Ladyleftfieldlover Fri 09-Jan-26 07:37:00

Morning all from a chilly West Oxfordshire. There appears to be neither snow nor frost. This was all forecast.

I managed the U3A lunch yesterday. The car park was only a short walk from the venue. We sat at an interesting table with some people we already knew and a couple we had never met before. The food was good and so was the entertainment.

I think my toe is improving . We’ll see.

A quiet day today I think. I have a pile of ironing and I need to think what to take out of the freezer for dinner.

Have a good day everyone.

Good morning everyone from a very wet and still cold mid Essex. A thoroughly miserable day yesterday, foggy all morning and most of the afternoon, then heavy rain from school pickup time and it’s still raining! I did go for a walk in the morning and posted some birthday cards. Then did some ironing, then managed to move the chairs in the lounge back to their normal places after the Christmas tree was taken down, needless to say, my back isn’t happy about that, but I hope it will improve soon,
I hope that no one has suffered any damage from the storm, which still continues making its way across the uk. We are forecast gusty winds today, but fortunately nothing like the gales experienced elsewhere. It will rain all day apparently, so no walk today.
Thinking of those who are in pain or struggling for any reason.
Have as good a day as possible everyone.

baubles Fri 09-Jan-26 07:28:29

Good morning from South Lanarkshire where it doesn’t feel as cold.

We had a pleasant afternoon with the children yesterday and the drive there and back was free from delays which is always a bonus.

I don’t have much to do today so will just see where it leads.

Wishing everyone the best day possible.

BlueSapphire Fri 09-Jan-26 07:26:42

Good morning everyone from a very wet and windy Northampton; we had snow yesterday evening, but most of it has gone now. I think I'm going to have another day indoors and not venture out to dance classes.

Yesterday was filled with busy-ness - vacuumed the sitting room chairs and sofa, and then decided to sort out the untidy drawers in the dining-room sideboard. Three drawers to do, and an unholy mess. A hotch-potch of table cloths, place mats, napkins in no particular order. Feeling very pleased with the new order. I also have an empty blanket/linen chest as table linen I'd flung in there now had space to go in the sideboard.

In the afternoon decided to tackle the Christmas card box and found three years worth of Christmas cards I'd been sent, must have been well over 150 cards! Sorted through them and found quite a few that would make nice gift tags, so found my pinking shears and spent the afternoon being a bit creative. Boxes of new cards now packed away under the stairs.
Then hoovered the carpet which by now was covered in glitter and bits of tinsel, which despite all my efforts still linger.

A more restful day ahead - but may clean the bathrooms and mop the floors.
Home-made chicken curry from the freezer for dinner.tonight.

Have a peaceful and pleasant Friday everyone.

Sar53 Fri 09-Jan-26 07:23:18

Good morning from the Essex coast where it is very wet. No snow here but torrential rain last night.
DD1, who lives in the Midlands, has had a lot of snow. I'm not sure if the girl's schools and college will be open today.
I'm still quite unwell with a very nasty cough. Yesterday we went food shopping and I was glad to get back indoors. If I'm still like this on Monday I will try to see a doctor.
I have no plans today or for the weekend.
I hope everyone stays warm and safe, best wishes to all xx

Gagagran Fri 09-Jan-26 07:22:56

Good Morning everyone from a wet south coast. Much less arctic and the winds were nowhere near as strong as we were warned to expect. Think Goretti is eastwards bound today so it should all calm down!

Our Tesco delivery is due between 8 and 9am and is much needed as we have been trying to eat from the freezer and fridge. Not even a slice of bread left for my toast!

Today is the anniversary of my parents marriage in 1932. I once asked Mum why they chose to get married at the low part of winter and it was because Dad was born and grew up on a farm. Early January was the quieter time on their calendar. They had 70 years minus 6 months together.

Have the best day you can everyone.

karmalady Fri 09-Jan-26 07:17:01

Madeleine, I just read about your factory shop, so sad to see so many worthy businesses going under. I had news yesterday that Patra are closing down, that is gutting

cornergran Fri 09-Jan-26 07:16:27

Morning Mick, morning All from a dry, windy corner of Somerset

I think we’ve been fortunate, no snow here although it’s cold after a very windy night.

Shoulder injection accomplished yesterday without any discomfort, wait and see time now. Volunteering this morning followed by an at home afternoon, I have a date with a book after some ironing.

Hope everyone has stayed safe and will continue to do so.

Take care and have the best day you can everyone.

Good morning from s somerset, windy in patches and grim sky all day

My dd in Wales said her big windows were bowing in and out in the wind and parts of cornwall were carnage. I hope our grans in cornwall are safe and without damage. Wind was relatively minor here and no snow

Yarn chicken today, my new jumper from my spun yarn, wishing I had bought just 100 more g of fluff. I may end up with short sleeves, or elbow length sleeves

I did wake a couple of times last night, could hear the wind but I still had a good sleep, according to new garmin.

I had a peep at my sd starter, which is taking a long time to grow, to get used to this flour. I think it is maturing at last and is double the size this morning. I am going to make a sd loaf today and fingers crossed for a better result. I am going to nurture this starter, for years and years

It will be an indoors day for me, anyway I did a walk yesterday

Have a good day

madeleine45 Fri 09-Jan-26 07:10:03

Good morning Mick and all Gn's from a cold dark but calm north Yorkshire morning. Cant really see much outside yet, but still and no sign of snow at all, so we may be lucky and be missed out from the storm or it is going to be later here.

At least this weather has made me make some effort here at home. Very pleased yesterday to have finished all the ironing, and drawers and wardrobes are full of clean and sorted clothes, which should last for quite a while, so quite pleased with that. Due to the forecast am quite up to date with most of shopping and so hopefully if it stays calm I only really need to go and get my local paper and the odd bit, and then can return to another catch up day at home.

I went to my meeting and lunch yesterday which in themselves were very pleasant, but I was in a lot of pain, struggling to move about and if it hadnt been the special christmas do I think I would have stayed at home. Even with extra painkillers I struggled all day. It is also exhausting, not just coping with the pain, but when you feel ok you just walk about and do whatever without constantly thinking of how to move, and what is the least painful etc. So I enjoyed meeting everyone, but went in the car, as didnt even feel up to using the buggy. I went to the hotel a little early as I knew how busy they would be in their car park. This was the hotel that I stayed in last year when there was the disaster with my bathroom. Some of you may remember the saga, and it was very nice to be greeted by many of the staff and asked how things are etc. I was pleased to see that they are very busy and still keeping going and very efficient as usual, so hopefully they will keep going.

We have a factory shop in the town , which it was announced on the news yesterday they are all going into administration, so sorry for the staff there and dont know who will take over from them. There is a wide range of shops here from quite pricey and special such as Betty s which always seems to have a queue waiting to go in on a morning (I always assume they must be visitors. Cant imagine local yorkshire folk paying their prices when we have quite a choice of other cafes serving very good fresh food a lot cheaper!) and then the usual ordinary bread shops like Thomas and Greggs. We have lots of small independant shops like a leather shop and those are quite close to Barkers which is our smart department store - think of something more like Are you being served, where you can get all sorts of things, and they have their own cafe too. With the auction marts and main line station etc it is the centre hub town for many people in the area and keeps quite busy most days.

I came home expecting my cleaning lady to either be here or have been to find a note telling me that she had come but there was no key in the special place and she hadnt been able to get in. So bad news and of course nothing sorted. Tried to contact her but no luck and so it was a very slow afternoon, just getting the bed changed, the washing put on racks and stuck out in the garden for a little bit of a blow, couldnt manage to get down to the washing line, and then finished the ironing. Not a great finish to the day.

However thank goodness this morning , still rather hobbling about, but not in as much pain, for which I am grateful, and so far as I can tell , we have been passed by from the storm, with no problems. But of course around here you can have two villages 10 miles apart treated very differently, one having no problems and the other needing the snow ploughs to even get out. I hope that all our gn friends are safe and have not had any damage if they have had the storm battering their homes. I shall wait to see the local news on the tv to see what has hapened in our area, but no doubt the dales will have had a lot more snow and the ploughs and tractors will be out and about. I would imagine that the quad bikes will make it a bit easier to feed stock and get around than in years gone by when you stuck your wellies or walking boots on and dug a way to the sheep with your dog helping you to find them under snowdrifts. It does seem odd to me when you see the great fuss there is on the news about any stormy or snowy weather in the winter now. We expected it , and just got on with it, dressing appropriately and carrying on. We walked 3/4 of a mile to our junior school and just expected to carry on walking there in the snow, not have the day off every time it snowed. When I went to the grammar school in Beverly it was about the same walk to the station, I think it was about 15 miles to Beverly and then about half a mile walk at that end too, but we just got on with it, apart from the one occasion where it became so much worse over the day that they had to stay at school for the night, as the trains couldnt get them home. It was seen as a great adventure and those of us who got home were rather sorry we were not part of the excitement. Ah well we shall see what today brings, and hope that people have been safe and warm at home and hoping that the channel islands are able to get power back and help to get over their problems.

Hope you have a safe journey today Mick. Bellasnana looks like even Malta is not so warm today, hope you get your haircut. I am hoping that all gns are safe and have no damage and will come back on later to discover the news from everyone but must get cracking on with a couple of jobs and then look out to see if it is going to be safe to go out for the paper etc. Too dark still to tell. Have to keep reminding myself that the days are getting lighter, as so far you could not tell! Wishing everyone a safe and warm day

Bellasnana Fri 09-Jan-26 06:21:36

Good morning from Malta where the wind has dropped at last and it’s stopped raining. High of 15°C expected.

Yesterday’s weather was non stop lashing rain and a fierce wind so I stayed indoors.

Had a visit from DD3 and the boys after school which was lovely. DGS1 was in a very cheerful mood and was singing. DGS2 wanted to make jelly so we did that. He loves helping.

I saw the news and the storm looked pretty bad in parts. I hope all our Gransnetters have stayed safe out of the awful weather.🙏🏻

I shall have to venture out today as I have a much needed hair appointment at noon. I will go and do the other errands I’ve been putting off all week whilst I’m out. Procrastination is my middle name, I’m afraid!

Hoping you all have a good day. Please stay safe and warm.🤗

Good morning from Scarborough
We arrived last night, no problem at all.The roads were clear. We came on a scenic route rather than motorways and it’s very pretty with the snow.
Doesn’t look like the storm will reach us here .
Back in Sheffield according to our ring doorbell it’s 3 inches deep in snow!
We hope to catch the bus into Whitby this morning. No doubt lots of walking with a sprinkling of coffee stops.
Take care everyone flowers
