Downsizing and parting with furniture

Nadine Dorries wrote an article in the Daily Mail talking of her pain and sadness on parting with certain items of furniture that She and her Husband bought when they first married. We don't have any such pieces going back that far except for our dining table and chairs which we bought about five years after we got married but I would gladly part with it to buy something more suitable for a smaller home. For me taking paintings, photograph's, small ornaments, favourite pieces of jewellery etc would be much more important. Nadine says she is now surrounded by furniture that does not fit her new home, big mistake! Ideally do or get someone to do a scale drawing for you so that you know exactly where each piece will fit. This not only helps you but the removal firm who will be very grateful too.

Further this theme, I'd like to share my story and say that at the moment, I'm somewhere between the "keep everything" and "throw everything" camps. I haven't downsized per se, but over the past couple of years, I've been gradually rearranging things in the house—a combination of small renovations, rearranging furniture, and replacing items that simply no longer suited my lifestyle.
I finally found the strength to get rid of things that were literally eating up space, and I finally felt like the house was breathing. I made a point of keeping my old dresser and a few vintage chairs—while they're not "on trend," they have an authenticity that no amount of modern minimalism can replace.
While searching for new accents, I became familiar with new interior design trends, and I saw some nice sofa options on 1StopBedrooms that would look great in my current concept. But I'm not rushing into a purchase yet—I need to live with this thought for a while and finally be convinced that I want major changes.
But I'm getting closer to the idea that interior changes aren't about fashionable decluttering, but about creating a comfortable living environment.

When we moved last we couldn't fit in the big sofa so my partner cut it in half and made it into a snuggle chair (for me and the dog) couldn't bare to part with it. 🤣

That is so clever! I'm very jealous that you have a partner who can downsize a sofa. i love to re-use old things but that would be beyond me.
