This was the highlight of my week. A couple of hours at the Odeon watching Flash Gordon, The 3 Mo's and The Lone Ranger with singsongs. I can still remember the words to 'We Come Along On Saturday Morning'. Bottles of pop and sticky sweets. Even though it was only for children, the manager was always dressed in his evening suit with shiny shoes. He must have hated us all with our grubby fingers on his velveteen seats. Happy days.

I grew up in New Zealand and there was no cinema nearby but we spent holidays at Grannie's house and went to her local cinema.
A Western and Old Mother Riley was typical fare. We bought bubble gum and blew bubbles. We also practiced whistling.
We were probably fairly rough kids Grandmabatty 😂🤣

Ps I started going in 1948 when I was seven.

We were members. We signed up and there were some special films only for members. We sang We Come Along On A Saturday Morning. Then there was a cartoon. Mighty Mouse was my favourite. There was a serial. Superman used to be left in some dangerous situation but the next week all was well because the ending was changed from the week before. Then there was a full length film.. When the actors were talking there was a lot of noise but when there was a fight there was silence.

I was going around 1964/65, when I was about 10 in North London. They played pop music in between the films - I remember Beatles songs especially. It was mayhem - lots of stuff being thrown around, and dropped from the balcony. I was part delighted and part terrified!

I can remember singing Roll out the Barrel and the national anthem being played and a film appearing at the end showing the queen on horseback and everyone standing up.

The National Anthem was played at the end of each programme at the cinema as I remember. There was a scramble to exit before it started, as no one left while it was playing!

Saturday Morning Pictures was one of the many things my mother thought was common, so I was never allowed to go.

I absolutely loved Saturday morning pictures…..Woolwich in the early 1950’s.

I remember. It cost sixpence and there were usually two films. Roy Roger’s and Hopalong Cassidy. It was very noise with all the children shouting. What I remember most is that a boy cut off one plait of a girl sitting in front of him. There was absolute mayhem .

Anyone remember Danny the Dragon 🙂. I used to go with my older brother and his friend, the cinema was right over the other side of town and we walked, I must have been about 6! Coming back one Saturday I saw my brother cross the road and thought it must be safe to cross after him, next thing I woke up in hospital after being knocked down by a van.

My mum would drop me off at the Odeon and then go and do her shopping in peace! My older sister worked part time as an usherette so at the end I was allowed to sit in the manager’s office until mum came to collect me.
I would sit in his big, leather, swivel chair.

We always had two films and sat upstairs in the balcony where things were thrown over . Mayhem and chaos.
I lost a sandal in the scrum when the doors opened and never found it.

Oh! KKOB That brought back some happy memories, I can distinctly remember the tune.

I won a fancy dress competition at our local Saturday cinema dressed as Miss South Pacific ( my little brother was Popeye). I think I was 8.

The serial always ended on a real cliff hanger so you had to return to find out what happened.

I was born in 1957 so I'm pretty sure that the delights of Saturday morning cinema were gone by the time I was old enough to go. But we lived in the country anyway so it wouldn't have been practical.

Same age as you, but I lived in central London 🤷‍♀️

My two friends and I used to go to the local cinema every Saturday morning, it was a lovely Art Deco building at the top of a flight of steps. The last time I visited the town for my friend’s funeral the building was a Wetherspoons!

I was born in 1958 and I don’t really remember Saturday morning pictures . The first film I saw as a family was Oliver.

I remember them well, we had a cinema on the main street,
the saturday matinee was 4 pence to get in and 2pence for an ice lolly...two and a half new pence. what would we get for that now?..

I loved Saturday morning pictures. It also meant a bus ride into Redhill in the late 50s or early 60s. I must have been about 9.

If you threaded milk bottle tops onto a long string and yours happened to be the longest that day free seat were given for the following week. I preferred the Shirley Temple films I didn’t like the cartoons.

I didn’t go every week though.

Channel 82 on Freeview (not sure if other channels)

Yes!!, Saturday morning cinema with my cousins and sharing a bag of chips on the walk home. Such happy memories.

AuntieE Thu 22-Jan-26 16:04:03

I was never allowed to go to the Saturday morning films.

My mother was convinced we would catch colds or come home with fleas or lice, or have nightmares because we had seen a violent film.

Saturdays were for doing things we couldn't do on schooldays, such as going shopping with Mummy, playing all day with my dolls, or helping with housework.

If we went to the cinema ( a very rare occurence) it was a family outing.

Jess20 Thu 22-Jan-26 15:52:42

Oh Grandmabatty, I love how you phrase that, my Mother the same!

KKOB Thu 22-Jan-26 15:39:28

We are the boys and girls well known as
Minors of the ABC.
And every Saturday we line up
To see the films we like
And shout aloud with glee.
We love to laugh and have a sing-song
Just a happy crowd are we.
We're all pals together,
We're minors of the A-B-C!

I used to get up on stage every 3 months or so and claim it was my birthday to get a free ticket for the next week. Took 'em a couple of years to catch me out.

I used to go to the Town hall in Brackley on a Saturday Morning ,cost something around 1/- to go in .
The usual shorts like Laurel & Hardy plus a western for something like 90 minute show.
