I go into a Wetherspoons when out ,and having noticed that more age related people are using .
Most will go for maybe a coffee which you can once buying initial mug , you can refill as many times as well plus also meals are priced as well.
I have noticed people who live in nearby residental homes going in, plus a group of elderly women knitting as in a organised group .

Our local one serves a good chilled Sauvignon Blanc and DH says a good pint (at a good price) but the food isn’t brilliant the tables are sticky and it is a bit run down but always really busy. Not my choice really much nicer places to go locally.

I had Eggs Benedict in our one a few days ago. Absolutely superb 👌

I'll meet you there, HelterSkelter!

HelterSkelter1 Sun 25-Jan-26 17:35:52

Marzipan that sounds very cosy.

HelterSkelter1 Sun 25-Jan-26 17:35:15

Oh dear me yes...the sticky carpet in the Kingston one. And thick smoke, but it was many years ago. Twenty at least.

I live across the road from a lovely 'Spoons, complete with a blazing log fire. I love the mix of people; families, people on their own, students, my old school friends and a local church group. I love that there are no dogs as I can't bear them, and also that there's no music. The buzz of conversation is a good enough back drop.

I know someone who worked for Spoons while student and he said they were excellent employers.

I've only been to one (which has since closed) the carpet was sticky and the food dreadful.

It's ok for the price paid.

Not fine dining but reasonable value, as are the drinks.

It's made me want to go to the Ramsgate one now Chocolatlovinggran. I was brought up in Ramsgate till 18 and left in. 1967. My parents stayed on there till 30 years ago and I haven't been back since they died. I must do this summer.
I have been to the Spoons in Kingston but it was in the evening and v v noisy crowded. I must look for the nearest one to me and try it out one day.

The food in our local one is awful and it’s a few years since I was there but am told it hasn’t improved.
The one in Llandudno is an old theatre, The Palladium, and is quite fascinating, the food was ok when I last went.

The one in Llandudno is the only one I have been, beautiful building, friendly staff.

There were 10 of us at lunchtime, we were there for a conference.

Wine was ok, the men said their beer was ok, we ordered a selection of starters and of course chips and mayo, to share, all edible.

We use Wetherspoons quite often as my husband loves their coffee and has several free refills.

They use all British bacon, sausages etc and their eggs are free range. I can honestly say we have always been 100% happy with all our food there. The staff are helpful and friendly.

We only go to a ‘Spoons on the rare occasion but we’ve enjoyed the meals, apart from a curry night one, where the ‘curry’ looked like a heated-up frozen meal.

One bonus is that they are music-free so if you having hearing issues but want to talk, it’s a good place for that. My son goes into one in Holborn and he sees Tim Martin in there quite often, checking that everything is up to scratch. He runs a tight ship.

The one on Manchester Deansgste is called The Moon under Water.

You know what you're getting at a Wetherspoons. DH and I look for a 'spoons when we are visiting somewhere new. We had lunch in The Chief Justice of the Common Pleas in Keswick. Its a really interesting building, originally used as the magistrate's Court.
I agree with ViceVersa about The Winter Gardens in Harrogate, we use that one on a yearly basis, usually in Spring when we visit the flower show.

DaisyAnneReturns Sun 25-Jan-26 13:47:09

Should have said that's not untrue of other places.

DaisyAnneReturns Sun 25-Jan-26 13:46:20

It looks to me as if you are on your own when it comes to food sensitivity or intolerances.

Chocolatelovinggran Sun 25-Jan-26 13:31:25

Indeed, HelterSkelter: it is on Ramsgate sands.
A bonus is, from the upstairs terrace, you can see the splendid harbour, and, perhaps, France on a clear day.
There is no doubt that this restoration helped in the regeneration of that part of the sea front.

We stayed at their hotel in Hull a couple of years ago. It was excellent, and cost us around £40 for the night.

We go to our local Spoons for either a cooked breakfast or fish and chips on a Friday once a month. The food is usually good and the one time I wasn’t happy the staff changed my meal without any fuss. aAs others have said it’s a lovely old building with lots of photos and information about the history of the place.
It has a lovely mixture of elderly people who use it as their local, couples having meals and staff from the local hospital. It’s always busy all year round as it also has an outside area overlooking a nature reserve. Best of all it is within walking distance from where we live!

Kate1949 Sun 25-Jan-26 13:19:54

Squiffy We have stayed in some of the hotels. They are lovely.

ViceVersa Sun 25-Jan-26 13:16:27

The Winter Gardens in Harrogate has to be one of the most beautiful buildings to house a Wetherspoons. We used to go there when my son was at army college, and I was amazed when we first went in there.
And no, people shouldn't be 'smuggling' their dogs in. If an establishment says no dogs, then that's fair enough - go and find somewhere which is dog friendly instead. I don't have any issue with that at all.

Squiffy Sun 25-Jan-26 13:08:17

We eat at our local Spoons fairly regularly. It’s immaculate, tables wiped clean as soon as customers leave. The food is always good and there are healthier choices available on the menu - jacket potato with Mediterranean vegetables is lovely and you can add extras (chicken etc) if you wish.

My DH has just stayed at one of their hotels for the second time and couldn’t fault it.

Maggiemaybe Sun 25-Jan-26 12:18:04

I eat at our local Spoons every now and again. I hate cheap bacon and sausages and theirs are definitely good quality. And no, I don’t know how they do it - sheer volume of sales maybe, particularly by the evening drinkers?

Like others, I appreciate the way they saved and restored a beautiful historic building ripe for demolition.
