On Wednesday night I was so cold I had a large bowl of porridge before I went to bed and slept like a log all night. Last night I did the same and was wide awake till 3 and slept fitfully till just now.
The wind must be from the north as it's cold and is rattling my north facing sash window. I need some new wedges. Goodness knows where I will find those. Come back our wonderful hardware shop. Sadly closed many years ago and is currently yet another Turkish barber.

Frank Muir used to shop at the hardware shop and mentioned it in a column he wrote. I wonder if I can Google and find it. The shop door had a brass bell above it.

I could cry thinking about it...I am tired and cold. A mug of tea is needed.

BlueBelle Fri 12-Jun-26 06:35:54

Oh it’s soooo cold I have my hot water bottle close to me

grandMattie Fri 12-Jun-26 05:32:21

Absolutely, r&l. It’s very odd. No heating here as I’m considered too gaga to have gas, so only night storage. It gives off heat 24/7 which isn’t what I need - just a top up in the evening…
Goodness knows what I’ll wear today.

RosesandLilac Fri 12-Jun-26 04:51:52

I’m maddeningly wide awake, since 3am I’ve been tossing and turning 😡
This cold, wet weather really is miserable, isn’t it grandMattie? I wore a thick fleece on top of a long sleeve shirt and jumper yesterday and was barely warm enough. I brought a hot water bottle to bed with me last night, as I have been doing for the last week. Ridiculous for June.

grandMattie Fri 12-Jun-26 04:30:18

Been awake since 230. I needed a wee. Unfortunately, if I get up after 2 am, that seems to be it for the night.
4 hours sleep is inadequate, so I’m even more tired than normal. Grrr…
The weather has reverted to March temperatures and rainfall which I’m finding even more confusing.🫤
Sleep well everyone.

HelterSkelter1 Thu 28-May-26 13:48:59

I shall continue to have a zero Guinness at bedtime. Even though I have to get up for a loo stop I fal back to sleep. Last night almost 6 hours sleep non stop. It even worked on the hot nights. Last night was a lot cooler.

I have only one can left so must put it on my shoppjng list.

grandMattie Thu 28-May-26 13:35:38

That would be kind, SORES. I’d be interested in the results. I’m about to take myself to bed. It’s an eternity since I woke up.

SORES Thu 28-May-26 07:09:42

I have been awake for an hour, covered with a sheet
only I woke up shivering! a welcome cool breeze
through a wide open window.

I was asleep by 11.00, then wide awake at 3.10
for about an hour, so loaded the dishwasher,
made herbal tea, watched the sky for a while,
fell back to sleep.

Our local Health Shop has a sign outside reading
‘fed up with waking at 3am? can’t get back to sleep?’
you need…
I’m going to check this out and will report back.

grandMattie Thu 28-May-26 04:36:08

I’ve been awake for 2 1/2 hours. No chance of dozing off. It makes me very cross (and tired) to wake up so early with no chance of getting back to sleep.
The blackbird has been singing his little heart out for most of the night; the dawn is breaking, the temperature is barely tolerable for nights…
What also annoys me are all the doomsayers telling us that one must sleep well, at least 6 hours, to avoid dementia and other horrors of old age. Chance would be a fine thing!

JamesandJon33 Thu 28-May-26 04:13:11

I ‘ve been awake for an hour. Now the sky is lightening and a blackbird is singing outside. I’ll concentrate on that and hope to sleep for a while.

JamesandJon33 Tue 26-May-26 14:17:52

Not to bad a night. All doors and windows open, so a slight breeze from the sea.
Up very early, before seven to get all jobs done.

HelterSkelter1 Tue 26-May-26 10:37:11

Despite the heat yesterday and last night I slept better.
I put it down to a can of cold tonightZero Guinness drunk at 9.00 pm while sitting in the cooler garden

Will try another tonight and see if that works again.

grandMattie Fri 22-May-26 04:42:16

Barely slept last night because I’m so cross.
I changed surgeries in March, and they did all the usual benchmark tests. I was warned that I was probably pre-diabetic. Had another blood test and, bingo, I am fully .type 2 diabetic!
The reason I’m furious is that I’m not overweight, I take lots of exercise(because I don’t have a car), eat well and freshly cooked, etc.
I was told it was due to aging - bummer, yet another generous gift from Anno Domini! No treatment for the moment.
It’s not fair!
Helter, I have found that freezing a hot water bottle is very helpful at night, but it might be useful in the day too.

HelterSkelter1 Thu 21-May-26 08:09:16

Oh that was a terrible night. Awake until 3 and then just slept for a couple of hours. Too much on my mind. Luckily a completely empty day in fact empty the next few days.

Am dreading the heat. It will be 31 deg on monday. No joke for DH with severe emphysema and virtually bed bound. I must set up the fans today. I am glad we now have several and one big one which nearly takes off.

NanKate Thu 21-May-26 07:10:24

I have just seen your post crazyH what very sad news especially for the grandchildren and of course his wife. 💐

NanKate Thu 21-May-26 07:07:42

I got up at 6.00 am after a reasonable night to make a cuppa. I trundled downstairs to find it was only 5.00 am 😏 This is going to put me out all day.

I think Pam Ayers should write one of her excellent poems about broken sleep for us Oldies.

grandMattie Thu 21-May-26 05:20:49

Back to napping through the night. It’s exhausting.
I’m also back to having a shirt, but discombobulating nap after lunch. It doesn’t help the nights but makes the rest of the day more tolerable…
Another joy of getting older, I fear.

JamesandJon33 Wed 20-May-26 06:12:45

We are away for a few days and a long drive yesterday. But a reasonable night’s sleep …given a different bed, a very warm room. And not terribly good pillows.

fancyflowers Wed 20-May-26 04:06:40

That's very sad CrazyH. I'm sorry for your loss, it must be very hard on his wife and your grandchildren.

Yesterday was very hectic, we moved into an apartment in preparation for the new kitchen being installed. DH worked like a trojan, with me helping as much as I could.

So I was in bed at just gone 7.00 and thankfully I slept for a few hours.
4.00 am now and my restless legs are kicking off again. I hope I'm tired enough to ignore them but it's doubtful.

Nannytopsy Wed 20-May-26 03:50:27

Good morning HelterSkelter. I have woken up far too hot. I’m always cold when I come to bed so snuggle up in the quilt, then wake up dripping!
I have done Wordle and read the headlines. Can I drop off again? Let’s see …

HelterSkelter1 Wed 20-May-26 02:23:37

Again another few nights of better less disturbed sleep and now here I am wideawake at 2 am.
Have done Wordle and read a few posts.
Will return to my latest book. Offshore by Penelope Fitzgerald. She describes living on a boat on the tidal Thames at Battersea Reach in the 60s and how it suddenly moves and creaks when the tide comes in. I have always wondered how on earth the boats don't tip over when they spend half a day lying on their sides on the muddy river bottom. Most unnerving.

BlueBelle Tue 19-May-26 07:43:43

The turn out fir events meetings even voting seems abysmal in England people seem to have gone into a ‘not my business’ mode
Bp very disappointing
Yes I ve been awake my usual 4 am but just been playing sudukos and word games

crazyH Tue 19-May-26 03:27:30

Thankyou Aldom

Aldom Tue 19-May-26 03:09:18

Hello CrazyH. I'm sorry to hear your sad news.
My grandchildren lost both paternal grandparents a little while ago. I feel for you and your grandchildren. flowers

crazyH Tue 19-May-26 03:00:47

No one has posted since Thursday

Well. I haven’t slept a wink - had bad news - my oldest 2 GC’s other grandad passed away yesterday, quite suddenly . A tall strong man, 84. No previous cardiac history. My grandson and he were very close, played golf together.
My grandson is devastated - so is my granddaughter.
I am so sad. He was a kind man . I always called him, if I wanted a lightbulb changed . I don’t know how his wife J will cope. 😢
