Since joining this thread I've been so incredibly relieved to find it's not just me awake in the wee small hours. It's helped me to relax into sleep and hence to sleep much better and for longer. I'm so grateful. Thank you BlueBelle.
I am another one who wakes nightly anytime between 1-3am and then struggles to get back to sleep.
Interesting that you say having virtual contact Aveline has helped with your sleep.
I am reluctant to look at devices though, I have set a limit of 5am before reading or scrolling.
I seem to be unable to leave the sofa and the dog and even when I wake up feeling that I’ve actually had enough sleep find myself nodding off again. I felt more motivated yesterday because it stopped raining and there was even a patch of blue sky. However I’m now glued to the sofa again. I’ve decided it’s January’itis and am planning to start afresh in February.
MayBee70 I totally agree regarding Januaryitis
I am writing off this month, roll on Sunday 1st February.
I shall give my head a wobble, along with a stern lecture to the inner me, to crack on regardless.
(Mind you my sofa and kindle are so comforting)
GrannyGravy13 I don't open devices during the night. I'd read about how the blue light from mobile phones and laptops mess up circadian rhythms and affect sleep. It's when I wake later that I read the comments. It has been very reassuring.
*GG13^, if only it was Januaryitis. I sleep little all year round. It’s marginally better in the winter when it’s old!
But, thank you Blue for starting this thread…
Do any of you use a pillow for side sleepers, which I am ? I wonder if a change of pillow might help me.
I've started listening to BBC Radio 3 Sleep tracks via ear buds and the BBC Sounds app on my phone. There's a huge range of different themes ranging from cricket, snowfall, cycle along a canal path, lie down in a library, snooze by the seashore etc etc - some of them a bit weird, but plenty to choose from. A mixture of sounds and soothing classical music. Each one last for over 5 hours. I have found it helpful and it does provide a focus if you have a wandering mind. www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/brand/m0024qvv
PS There are 53 different episodes!!
I usually listen to Jason Stephensons get back to sleep fast when I need to get more sleep but this morning Bob Ross was on Sky Arts and that got me back to sleep. I always used to listen to him on the BBC during the pandemic and he always made me fall asleep. It worked again this morning. I wish he was still on BBC catchup but can be found on utube.
NanKate, I’ve got one, but I use it with a second pillow on top.
Tbh, I haven’t really noticed any real difference, except that it doesn’t lose its shape so easily.
I’m often awake between 2.00 and 4.00, but usually get up and have a drink and biscuit, which do send me back to sleep quickly. I often check Gransnet while I’m awake, but don’t think it keeps me awake.
Im a really poor sleeper and some nights my husband is getting up and i haven't even been to sleep! Ive tried many things to help and i'm sorry to say i either sleep or i dont and i try not to stress about it.
I did come across this series on one of my many sleepless nights The Home Front which is worth a listen anyway, even if its when having an afternoon cuppa with your feet up

‘Morning all 😊, as usual I have no idea why I’m awake. It’s raining heavily and it seems that this is the only house with lights on, everything is in darkness around me.
For some weird reason the red light on the television has just started flashing 😵💫, I very rarely watch it so I have no idea why because I thought it was switched off at the plug. How strange….
I have made a cup of coffee (thank goodness for my Tassimo in the bedroom) and I’ll try reading for a while.
I hope that the rest of you are all sound asleep.
Morning RosesandLilac. Wide awake here.
I nodded off earlier at about 11.30pm, but was awake at 1.am. I plugged myself into Audible and listened to Richard E Grant reading his 'A Pocketful of Happiness.' He has a lovely rich and soothing voice.
The Man is snoring away next to me. If I tell myself his rhythmic, low snoring is like the purring of a cat it doesn't bother me.
I think the reason I'm not tired is that I too have January -itis, as was mentioned earlier in the thread. The horrible wet, cold and windy weather has seen me hibernate a bit. I have enjoyed staying in, reading more, watching old films and generally pottering but not exerting myself much.
It's been lovely and I'm so grateful I no longer work when it's wintery out. This self-indulgence has been wonderful. I have felt no guilt at all but I think I'm suffering from not getting enough fresh air and exercise.
I love it though, when wintery days give us a good excuse to hunker down indoors. Too much tea drinking too, probably...but what a luxury it is. My working life was extremely hectic and stressful. I am owed lots of lazy days.
Think I'll get up and make myself a lemon and ginger tea with a dash of honey and work my way through one of the Sunday papers. So many supplements, it takes a week to read them.
Wishing all those awake in the wee small hours a return to slumber soon.
I have been wideawake for an hour. Stuck on Wordle so that can wait till later. Will.make a to do list then I can forget a few thoughts rolling around in my brain and maybe cuddle down...or read. All quiet outside and inside.
Almost the end of January and I bought some daffodils in pots yesterday so they will be bursting into flower soon indoors. And I sorted 10 books from the bedroom bookshelf to go to the charity book shop tomorrow and dusted the shelf before I got into bed last night. Very pleased and I will do the same with the other bookshelves around the house.
I listened to Michael Rosen on Radio 4 discussing aphorisms with an expert last evening and one was "be like a postage stamp, stick to one thing until you get there" so I am sticking to decluttering book shelves for the moment!
Good morning. Being a widow, the only thing that wakes me up,is me. I rather miss DH’s gentle snoring, so reassuring.
Not too bad a bight, lots of wakings up, beset with odd, colourful dreams.
Good morning. Unbelievably good night SS I’ve only just woken up!

I agree. I switch off all my appliances at night because of the blue light thing. Just as well as I had a missed call from a friend in Spain at 00.13 this morning!
Well I should never have made my last post. I've jinxed it. Awake for hours last night and three loo trips.
Incidentally, I was wondering why I sometimes lasted all night without a wee and other times had to go several times. Then I read that in deep sleep urine production reduces. Interesting. Not sure if it's true but would explain a lot.
Oh that might explain it for me too Avaline because some nights I don’t get up till early morning 5 ish for a wee .
This last year or two I ve become very easy going about sleep or non sleep, it doesn’t seem to make any difference to me in the day, what energy I have and it makes no difference to me nodding off in front of the tv either. 🙄
My brain has never heard that one. Three times last night .
My brain's memory comes and goes!
