First of all I must say that this is a selfish first world problem but I'm struggling as to what to do. I have the opportunity to make a short but expensive trip this summer. It would be quite an experience for me. However, it does seem a lot of money to spend on just myself. Half of me says, go on, you can afford it, go while you're still young but the other half is raging at me for considering such indulgence.
I've said I'll sleep on it but suspect I'm in for a restless night.

If you can afford it, if it’s somewhere you want to go, and if you would like to do it, go for it.

There are no guarantees in this life, enjoy.

If you can afford it, go. I say this because once you have ill health or someone close to you does, you may never be able to do this again. What use is a load of money when you're too ill or old to get enjoyment from it. I only say this if you HAVE the spare money which you say you have. Completely different ball game if you only have limited funds and are wondering whether to spend it. get it booked and have somthing to look forward to while we get through these dark winter months.

sorry for typos, I can spell, honestly !

100% go! You're worth it 👌

valdavi Mon 02-Feb-26 19:10:46

If it's just that you think it's a lot of money to spend on yourself, I would say do go.
If you're unsure about the company you'll be keeping & whether it's actually for you, then maybe not.
If your children had an opportunity to go on a short but amazing trip when they were teenagers, & it was a bit on the expensive side but you could afford it, you'd probably have been all for it - so same goes for yourself now.

MollyNew Mon 02-Feb-26 19:13:36

If you don't go, would you look back and regret your decision?

SueDonim Mon 02-Feb-26 19:16:49

If you’re not depriving yourself/family of necessities, then go, for sure! No one knows what’s round the corner for any of us so grab the chance with both hands. smile

JenniferEccles Mon 02-Feb-26 19:19:40

Aveline honestly go for it. Just go.
You can afford it which of course is a major consideration but unless your going would seriously throw up problems for someone close then it’s no contest.

GO! GO! GO!

Aveline Mon 02-Feb-26 19:23:58

Thank you all for your encouragement. I'm just used to being 'careful' with money and not being extravagant. I'm asking myself how I'd feel if I didn't go. I'm still not sure. I suppose I could console myself thinking how much I'd saved!

You only get one life. Grab every opportunity with both hands. Go and enjoy it.

V3ra Mon 02-Feb-26 19:26:00

If you can afford it and would enjoy it, then yes you should go.

I imagine you, like most of us, have gone without in order to put other people before yourself over the years.
This is your time now 😎

ViceVersa Mon 02-Feb-26 19:26:32

They say at the end of the day, it's not the things we do which we regret, but the things we didn't do. So if it's something you really want to do, go for it!
I do know how you feel though, I find it very very difficult to justify spending money on myself at the best of times. But life is short...make the most of it.

foxie48 Mon 02-Feb-26 19:31:46

Go and have a wonderful time, just tell us all about it so we can share the experience!

Allira Mon 02-Feb-26 19:34:44

Go and enjoy it.

If not, you'll look back one day and wish you had, but by then you won't feel up to making the trip.

JaneJudge Mon 02-Feb-26 19:39:31

Just go

westendgirl Mon 02-Feb-26 19:42:18

If you can afford do go. It's time to spoil yourself .

Luckygirl3 Mon 02-Feb-26 19:51:25

It is interesting that people of our generation sometimes find it hard to treat ourselves. That post war mindset of "waste not want not" and not getting big-headed or self-indulgent.
Dive into this "indulgence" ... because, as they say, you are worth it!!

midgey Mon 02-Feb-26 21:16:21

No pockets in shrouds! Just do it. And enjoy every moment.

Grannybags Mon 02-Feb-26 21:19:40

Definitely go!

ClicketyClick Mon 02-Feb-26 21:56:35

Go!! There comes the time when we can't do things because of ill health so make the most of your time while you can. You've probably worked hard for your money so why not treat yourself with it. Good luck and enjoy it.

Absolutely you should go. Take a nice journal and special pen and write down everything, from the hotel the night before right through to the finish. Food, people you speak to, things you’ve seen and done. Then you can relive it whenever you want to.

Doodledog Tue 03-Feb-26 03:39:58

I agree with the others. Life is for living. Go, and enjoy the trip.

LauraNorderr Tue 03-Feb-26 04:57:40

Live your life without regret.
