First of all I must say that this is a selfish first world problem but I'm struggling as to what to do. I have the opportunity to make a short but expensive trip this summer. It would be quite an experience for me. However, it does seem a lot of money to spend on just myself. Half of me says, go on, you can afford it, go while you're still young but the other half is raging at me for considering such indulgence.
I've said I'll sleep on it but suspect I'm in for a restless night.

I see you have booked it!
Hooray!
Can you get a taxi transfer to the airport now so you don't need to faff about???

Oh it is the most beautiful country.

I’m not at all religious but I stood at the top of Gods Window and look over the country before me and thought “You know, Heaven could just be true”.

You will be so glad you’ve booked 👏👏

Aveline, well done making the booking. I’ve been thinking about taking a trip this year but dithering about the cost. Reading all the comments has made my mind up, I’m going🤣

This song has always inspired me - under African skies - recorded 1987 in Zimbabwe as it wasn't possible in apartheid SA with Paul Simon and SA township singer Miriam Makeba

Of course you will hmm.

And we'll all be turning right on the plane while you turn left.

And you might find yourself sitting next to a handsome, fabulously wealth widower who wantes nothing more than to get to know you and shower you with extravagant gifts and and a gloriously expensive and glamorous lifestyle.

Please ask him if he has a brother.

Etoile2701 Tue 03-Feb-26 16:53:01

If you can afford it go! I am now of an age and financial situation where I can't afford holidays and I so wish I had travelled more when I was younger and wealthier.

Susieq62 Tue 03-Feb-26 16:53:33

Don’t look back and say “ I wish I had gone”
Do it! There are no pockets in shrouds

Applegran Tue 03-Feb-26 16:54:44

In years to come you probably will not remember with lots of pleasure things you bought (even things like a super sofa/TV/car/handbag) but you may well look back with pleasure at good experiences you had. If you can afford this trip ....why not?

Lallylou Tue 03-Feb-26 17:00:45

Go......whilst you can enjoy it. If you can afford it why are you feeling guilty. Life is to be enjoyed when you can and if you can. 🌹

Lallylou Tue 03-Feb-26 17:01:39

Ood idea spaghetti!

Paperbackwriter Tue 03-Feb-26 17:05:59

I've learned it's the things you don't do (but wanted to) that you regret. Please go and then also please let us know how it went!

Paperbackwriter Tue 03-Feb-26 17:06:49

"Please ask him if he has a brother." Two brothers, please!

I suggested you could keep a journal because in 2024 we sailed to New York on the QM2, visited a few places in Canada and then sailed back. It was a very special treat for our Ruby wedding anniversary and I kept a very detailed diary about the whole trip. So that last year, a year on from the trip, I was able to read day by day what I had been doing/eating/who I’d been speaking to on that day the year before and I could savour it all over again.

sandye Tue 03-Feb-26 17:07:52

If you go and enjoy it you may say 'I wish I hadn't but have enjoyed it'. If you don't you will always regret not going. you earned the money to spend on you so enjoy.

silverlining48 Tue 03-Feb-26 17:10:28

I really understand Aveline, having always lived frugally in the past, and hesitating to spend hard saved money on expensive things, but now is the time, because none of us are getting any younger. Enjoy yourself , and tell us all about it on your return.

Thank you all for your encouragement. I'm just used to being 'careful' with money and not being extravagant. I'm asking myself how I'd feel if I didn't go. I'm still not sure. I suppose I could console myself thinking how much I'd saved!

Well, yes, I suppose you could console yourself on how much you’d saved, but ask yourself, what would you do with what you’d saved - would it go to something you desperately need or would it just sit in your bank account “for a rainy day”?

(Maybe the trip is that rainy day).

I really do think that if you can afford this trip, would really love to do the trip and would regret not doing the trip, then you really should go ahead and do the trip.

Only you know deep down what is holding you back, and once you’re brought that into the open (I mean to yourself, not on here), can you then decide what to do.
