Recycling items dumped in my rubbish bin pe**** me off

My recycling and rubbish bins were emptied on Friday. Today I went to bring them in. Some low life had emptied a load of stuff into the bottom of my bin, coke cans, glass bottles, crisps packets, some metal canister covered in mud and an empty plastic pill holder. The bin is tall so I had to empty it in the road and pick it all up - a disgusting job. Whoever it was just stopped and cleared out their car. Why couldn’t they have taken it home, put it in a bag in the bin, or put it in the correct recycle bin? The latter would still have annoyed me but at least I wouldn’t have had to touch it. What is the matter with some people?

Someone put a load of polystyrene packaging on my recycling bin which is not even recyclable. I had to cut it up and put in my own rubbish bin… made me very angry

When my tv aerial was replaced years and years ago I wondered where the old one was, assumed (wrongly) that the man had taken it away to go to the dump, until I found it in the bottom of my green garden waste bin.
Fortunately before I emptied a load of grass cuttings into it.

Every day for weeks now someone has put their dogs’ poo bag NOT tied up in one of my bins. I m so annoyed because my recycled bin and my green garden waste bin would not be emptied if it’s in there, if my rubbish bin had just been emptied it would be in it for two weeks.
So I have now put an elastic bungee strap (which I use to use for carrying stuff on my bike) on the bins from side to side to hold the lid in a locked position. So far it’s worked I just have to remember to take them off the night before emptying day.
Might be worth some of you trying that The straps are cheap enough. You may have one or two knocking around used for luggage, cycle racks, etc

We get dog poo bags put in our black bin because we live near a park so dog owners are up and down our street on the way there or returning. Neighbours have also had this happen. Is disgusting and some neighbours have now stuck big notices on top of their black bins to try and stop this.
Some people just beggar description.

silverlining48 Sun 15-Feb-26 13:34:52

We have to tie our lid up now, to stop people dumping their dog poo bags into our bin. They don’t even bother tying them up which makes a terrible stinking mess for us to have to deal with.

DollyRocker Sun 15-Feb-26 13:51:17

My neighbours drilled through their wheelie bins and secured the lidswith a bike cable type combi lock.

AuntieE Sun 15-Feb-26 14:03:09

It is annoying, especially as my bins are very clearly labelled as to what goes in which bin.

I have two solutions to offer. Fetch your bins in as soon as possible after they have been emptied.

Except on bin days, keep your bins so far away from the pavement, so as not to tempt those who can neither be bothered to read what each bin is for, nor to take their rubbish home with them.

BlueBelle Sun 15-Feb-26 14:33:41

AuntieE my bins are by my back gate in an alleyway which the lorry comes down, so my bins live outside my back yard as do everyone else’s in my area. there are also people whose back yard/garden has been made into parking spaces or a garage.
We don’t put them out on the pavement everyones situation is different My daughter has a small unused grass alley at the end of their block so all the bins live there otherwise they would have to come through their front door and hallway and right through the house to the back garden

Unfortunately space is at a premium on the road we live on so there is nowhere to safely stow our bins away. Though our SiL has suggested getting a large wooden low shed like structure at the front of the house locked with a padlock. Some people do have these for bikes etc. So we might have to do that but will take up much of the space in front of our property.

I appreciate that it’s annoying when someone uses our refuse bins but aren’t they supposed to be brought in on the day that they are emptied? We would be fined by our council if we left them out for two days!

JaneJudge Sun 15-Feb-26 14:52:54

This would annoy anyone, wouldn't it? why would someone even think it was ok?

I am always shocked at what people leave around bottle banks and clothes banks. It is as though they are an advert for antisocial littering of unwanted items

Esmay Sun 15-Feb-26 18:50:29

Someone filled my general waste bin with a lot of well used mens clothes .

25Avalon Sun 15-Feb-26 20:59:26

Quite true. I should have brought the bin in immediately but it was chucking it with rain. All my bins usually come in and go behind the garage. When they are out they are stood on my wide driveway so are always on my property and not blocking the pavement. They go out the night before collection but recycling is collected by a separate vehicle from the black ordinary rubbish. My bin has been left with mud all down the insides as well.

I have a dog but wouldn’t dream of putting a poo bag in someone’s bin although I have been known to throw it(tied) into a skip.

and now the councils are talking about renewing bins, we wont have the recycle bins,I think we're getting 4 new bins and a list of what you can and can't put in them, if you put something in thats not allowed they can fine you £400, we'll see. what's to stop other folk from puting rubbish in your bin. don't know who thought that one up

25Avalon Sun 15-Feb-26 21:35:19

Also how will you get rid of the old bins? The council won’t usually take them and you end up having to drive to the tip yourself to get rid of them.

Allira Sun 15-Feb-26 22:22:56

My bet is that it's the builders dumping their rubbish in the bin.

Abcdefg Mon 16-Feb-26 14:13:52

Our council started charging for garden waste, I live near the tip so take mine and my neighbours there. Took me months to get the council to remove the green wheelie bin. I didn't have room for it in my garden

Romola Mon 16-Feb-26 14:20:13

Dog poo in my bin quite regularly. General picnic rubbish in my green bin therefore not emptied by bin men.
Tins in my glass box.
Sometimes I wonder why I bother.

Fallingstar Mon 16-Feb-26 14:27:32

Is so annoying. And would love to be able to tuck my bins away but the little alleyway between our property and some flats next door is taken over by the countless bins used by the flats. So we only have a pocket handkerchief in front of the house, and is easy for people to access our bins. We have three and they are so enormous, a neighbour two doors up couldn’t get her mobility scooter out because of her bins, she tried to sort it out with the council but no joy, eventually her son took two bins away and left her with the black one so she doesn’t recycle but just puts all her refuse into black sacks in the black bin.

Grammaretto Mon 16-Feb-26 14:37:58

I get this all the time as I live on the high street.

Coffee cups and half a pizza dumped on my paper recycling so the men wouldn't lift it.

Half filled lager cans in the glass bottle box.

I have to bring out the bin just before the bin lorry comes.

Now I have an old mattress of mine I want to dispose of and don't know how as no-one will collect it and I can't lift it, it won't fit in the car, is now soaking wet and birds are taking the horsehair innards for their nests. At least I think it's birds.....!

It's not out on the pavement yet. It's behind the house.

Allira Mon 16-Feb-26 14:42:28

Warning:

Never order a skip. It fills up before you've had a chance to get rid of your own waste stuff!

pce612 Mon 16-Feb-26 15:00:50

You should get on to your council and demand that they put a dog waste bin at every entry point into the park.
Perhaps get your neighbours to sign a petition and harass your local councillors as well until it is sorted.
Good luck.

Only today I brought in my recycling bin which was emptied this morning and found it had a large pile of newspapers and some dirty takeaway containers in it! I had to tip everything out then put the papers back in and the takeaway containers in the general waste bin as they only recycle clean plastic! I once opened my garden waste bin to see if it had been emptied and found a dog poo bag on top of the garden waste! If I hadn't checked either the bin would have been left or if not the waste would have been contaminated!
I live by a scchool so am used to people putting stuff in my bins but it is better since I retired as they are taken in sooner. I once had an unwrapped babies nappy left in my bin. I left it as it would be emptied the next week but by then it had stuck to the bottom and remained the following week after emptying. I had to poke it with a stick to get it out, then wrap it before putting it in again! Some people are just disgusting!
If I walk my son's dog I either put the poo bag in a public bin or take it back to their house to their bin. It's not rocket science!

We actually have dog waste bins at entry and exit points to the park. But some people obviously are not prepared to walk back to use them if their doggy poops on the street, then is just easier to dump it in the nearest bin in front of somebody’s house.
