Your most exotic places and any plans to visit others ?

I went to Uzbekistan last September and enjoyed every minute. Fabulous country and really kind and hospitable people. I’d happily go again.
I’ve visited most of the Emirates and love them too. The smaller the Emirate the more authentic the experience imho.
Off to India next and then China.

What a wonderful thread! I’ve been fortunate to have traveled aplenty now.
Almost got stuck in Kenya with the Covid outbreak, it was worrisome watching the hotel empty and having to trust in our travel agents to see us home safely, we were last plane back into UK thank heavens our booked taxi driver came as many others didn’t show up, we had to get a further flight to Channel Isles and then forced into isolation for 14 days but at least at home by the skin of our teeth.
Apart from that some wonderful times Vietnam probably my favourite and would go back to again and again.
Australia I was fortunate enough to have a complete tour from Sydney to Cairns. Then many places around the world in between, not yet Japan but I haven’t finished yet!

The only exotic place was Singapore in the mid sixties where we were stationed for three years. I remember when I first arrived we stayed in a small hotel on a palm fringed beach while we were looking for a house. It was straight out of Somerset Maugham and very romantic. Singapore was short on decent beaches. After we’d been on the island a while we used to hire a car with friends, cross the causeway into Malaya and find some deserted beach to spend the day swimming and picnicking. We once got lost in a pineapple plantation!

Most of our travelling has been in Europe. We lived in Belgium and in Holland and travelled widely in Germany. After he retired, DH flatly refused to do long haul flights so I tore up my list of far away places with strange sounding names and settled for closer to home. I now live them vicariously through my children who are always off somewhere far flung! Some of the things they do when they get there make my hair stand on end😁!

I'm a real home bird and have been for ages, but did some exciting hitching in the 70's, once all on my own round Brittany.
So Crete has been as far as I ever got.

My longing however is to go to Capetown, "under African Skies".

No money currently at all (the back wall needs doing, and.....etc) but could save up, and I'd need to go with someone who is confident, as I'm not at all.

Northern Cyprus just blew me away, the history, the scenery and the friendliness of the people! My son was five and in a wheelchair and everyone was so helpful!
The Guggenheim in Bilbao was also spectacular!

At the moment anywhere warm and bright would be exotic compared to a dreary Durham.

I’m soon to be 75, but after DH died (he hated and wouldn’t go on holiday) I spread my wings and try to get 3 holidays in a year. Not long haul, just Madeira, Spain, or Cyprus. However New York is my indulgence and I go with DD2 (who has now been 40 times!).

polly123 Why not break your journey to Australia ? We found it easier to stop off a couple of times - Dubai and Singapore. You can get deals from travel agents which keep costs a bit lower. We found 8 hour stretches much easier than sitting there for 24 hours. When we were young we didn’t care but as you get older a direct flight is just too much!

Hi, I can remember my name always saying, when asked, where are going on holiday. She'd reply Airegate! When asked where that was She'd reply 'at the end of our garden path!' She did once go to Margate! Now the world is such a small place and we can pick and choose where & when go. Times change. Happy holiday!

Been to Venice several times, so beautiful. Also Florence, Amalfi coast, Viaraggio,Italian lakes and of course Rome.
Most exotic place - Mauritius
Loved Sicily, Paris, South of France,Brittany. Never been to Spain but would like to visit the unspoiled parts.
Not wild about Amsterdam.
Would love to visit US, Mexico and several other places.

Now have a son living in Australia but can't face the long flight. In fact I don't like flying. I seem to know a lot of people who hate flying these days.

We spent two years living in Seychelles when we were first married. We lived on Mahe but also visited Bird Island, La Digue and Praslin. On our way home we went on safari in Tanzania (there was a cholera epidemic at the time) and visited the pyramids in Egypt and spent time in Istanbul. Since then I’ve spent holidays in Cairo and Albania when OH was living and working there. I’ve visited Australia many times over the years. When OH and I flew to Sydney for my sister’s 60th we had a holiday in Cambodia and Thailand. I lived Helsinki and Stockholm when I went with my daughter. Copenhagen was interesting but so expensive. We’ve been to most of Europe and are going to Malta in the summer. Actually, OH has been to countless countries on business including Fiji, Afghanistan and Russia.

Most exotic for me were Cuba, India, Japan, Vietnam and Oman. All with organised groups, so I havent done anything long haul off my own bat. I would find that very daunting as a woman on my own. Dominica in the Caribbean (not the Dominican Republic) was pretty undeveloped. I also went to the Soviet Union (as it was then) in 1987 during the Cold War era which was a bit of an experience.

Not particularly exotic but going to Marrakesh for a few days with my daughter, flying out tomorrow. I love travelling with her as she's well travelled and extremely good fun! I've travelled widely in Europe, spent a month in NZ and visited the US several times but this is my first visit to Africa. I do, however, live vicariously through my daughter as she works as an expedition medic along with the day job. She's also an excellent photographer so I have been on many journeys via Instagram with her, to places that most people never go and would never want to go, absolutely fascinating and sometimes a bit scary!

Very many years ago, Beirut, when it was still ‘the Paris of the Middle East’, and various parts of Syria - Damascus (I’m sure we were the only tourists), the castle Krak des Chevaliers - nobody there but us, Palmyra, and sundry other historical sites whose names I can’t recall ATM, and that have sadly been badly damaged in more recent fighting.

Much more recently, Sulawesi in Indonesia - the most fabulous masses of wonderfully colourful marine fishes I’ve ever seen - I wasn’t quite so keen on the barracuda!

Also Indonesia, Lake Toba, stayed beside a vast lake formed from the crater of a long extinct volcano, with green hills all around - as someone put it, like a tropical Switzerland. Fabulously gorgeous.
Plus the orang outan reserve at Bukit Lawang.

Many areas of Oman, where we were living, inc. Nizwa, plus a few nearby Emirates, apart from the well known ones - Al Ain and Fujairah.

In Oz, Heron Island on the Great Barrier Reef.

Mount Bromo (the volcano) also in Indonesia, and Aceh, a couple of years after the catastrophic tsunami, since dd1 was working there.

One of our children worked in Bermuda for a while and we flew out to visit. I’ll never forget the stunning colour of the water as we drove over the bridge from the airport. One of my best friends lives in New Zealand and I’d love to go and visit her.

Hawaii,Great Barrier Reef,Grand Canyon,and most of USA,Chichenitza in Mexico. Always wanted to go to South America and Antartica but won't happen now

Antarctica and the Galapagos islands for me - both fabulous trips! Swimming with seals. iguanas in the Galapagos (and seeing lonesome George too) and seeing loads of penguins in Antartica. .

All I can say was it was fabulous! Visited all in the north, stayed with a family, learned some traditional cooking
Went to halong Bay, slept on the ferry in our own cabins
Hoi An the lantern Town
They went Hue (ancient royal city)
And the did the Viet cong tunnels (I didn’t go as I had had a fall so rested by the hotel pool)
We did an I thermal flight to the south
It was fabulous
People very kind
Food is amazing
Just wonderful

I haven't read every post on this thread but I think I'm alone in having absolutely no desire to visit far flung places. The furthest I've been is probably the Canary Islands (although I've been to Spain, Portugal, Austria and Germany) and I only went there to accompany my husband who was determined to be uncontactable by work on holiday. While there I would count down the days until, when past halfway, we'd "broken the back of it" (my feeling not his!) and the return journey was approaching.

This was not because I couldn't bear to be away from home. It was because I was stuck somewhere I didn't want to be, doing wife and mother stuff in a foreign place, until the plane allowed me to leave. Also, having three bickering children who didn't have their own friends, their own rooms and their own things with them. Not to mention that I was stuck with them and their dad too!

Even now that I'm my own woman, I can't be bothered with the hassle (and expense) of travelling long distances to see exotic places. Seen one, seen 'em all... on TV!

Sadly my travelling days are over, but places that have happy memories for me are Sydney, Paris, Prague, Venice, Sorrento, New York, Bangkok and in fact many places in Europe. Never been to Africa or most of the USA and never will now.

Several years ago, I went for a month to Ecuador, to the jungle and then a week cruising the Galapagos Islands on a boat that took around 12 passengers. I did however come back with Meningitis - which made it even more memorable.

I’ve been lucky enough to have travelled quite extensively but the Seychelles is possibly the most exotic. This was some years ago when it was utterly unspoilt and ravishingly beautiful. My passport has now expired and I have no desire to ever get on a plane again.

I would love to go back to Prague and many many places in Spain,and still hope to manage a trip to Vienna.

Not so exotic as India, which too I would love to visit, but not on my own,and I cannot stand organized tours.

There are many places on my bucket list but until I downsize I can't afford any sort of holiday let alone somewhere exotic.
I had 2 holidays in Dubai while my DD was living there but would never have chosen to go there otherwise - too hot for my liking and I'm not into designer shopping etc. I only had to pay for flights as DD paid for everything once I was there.
I'd quite like to go on a safari. I did visit a reserve while on a trip to South Africa a few years ago but it was quite small and we only saw a limited variety of animals.
I guess I won't make it to many of the far flung places I would have liked to visit as some require rather more youthful energy than I posess these days!
