I shop at John Lewis, Waitrose but the giddy limit is buying eggs from an egg farm.

She is almost 13 and an authority on most things.

I don’t know how I ve ever lived not frequenting John Lewis 🤣🤣🤣 B and M and the Range suit me
Aldi and Asda for me I find MandS way too expensive for food

“She is almost 13 and an authority on most things”………..well, aren’t they all? 😂

I should perhaps have added that I love her to pieces.

I go to Lidl, and do an online shop at Asda, I sometimes get fancy bits from Waitrose or M&S but can’t afford to do a weekly shop there.
I don’t think that doing a weekly shop at more expensive supermarkets makes a person posh but it does make them wealthier. Nothing wrong with that of course, am just stating a fact.
And am quite happy with the food I buy in my local Lidl.

GrannyGravy13 Wed 18-Feb-26 17:22:56

Fallingstar I cannot get on with Lidl, our nearest Aldi is ok for top up bits and bobs (if they are in stock)

Fatoldlady Wed 18-Feb-26 17:26:37

Not sure if I'm really posh - I have chickens, but my nearest John Lewis is around 60 miles away, so that's not a store I frequent.

HelterSkelter1 Wed 18-Feb-26 17:35:50

My nearest Waitrose is a 4 minute walk and I go daily!! How posh is that. But maybe would be posher if the butler went instead. And it's my nearest supermarket anyway.

My nearest JL was a 15 minutes drive away opposite Windsor castle and anecdotally there was an underground tunnel from the castle to the shop. Maybe true. The shop closed as it was old and couldn't be adapted for accessibility. I think there were too many stairs and half floors. But it was the loveliest of old stores and I so miss it. It was very posh!

Lidl and Aldi are not very good, or consistent as far as gf products are concerned so that dictates my shopping habits.

I’m screaming inside,,,,,,..I hate the word posh.
I would hate be described as posh.
I want to put posh in room 101.
Sorry.

JaneJudge Wed 18-Feb-26 17:45:24

You do get what you pay for with eggs

I didn't say I was pleased.

Obviously, my mother would have been.

HelterSkelter1 Caleys was where my love affair 💚 with JL started. A lovey shop, including the wonky flooring.

Chocolatelovinggran Wed 18-Feb-26 17:48:08

Of course thirteen year old girls are authorities on most things.
Our role, as grandparents is to say " yes, dear", wherever we buy our eggs.

AskAlice Wed 18-Feb-26 17:49:41

Jones Brothers in Holloway Road, North London was the closest I ever got to John Lewis (it was a partner company to JL.) That was in 1968 when I went with my mum to get my school uniform!

HelterSkelter1 Wed 18-Feb-26 17:52:47

I don't like the word either, but can't think of another that describes so exactly what is meant. I have been described as posh for shopping at Wrose. Silly and I want to reply in a Sybil Falty voice saying. "Oooh I know" but I am no good at voices.

GrannyIvy Wed 18-Feb-26 17:53:33

My favourite shop is John Lewis and can happily browse around for hours. I usually shop in Waitrose and M & S food hall. I do pop into Morrisons and the co op occasionally. I buy all my meat from two local Farm shops. I also have an occasional Ocado delivery! Am I posh I don’t know 🤷‍♀️

HelterSkelter1 Wed 18-Feb-26 18:00:51

NotAGran55. I nearly cried when it closed. I was 26 when I first shopped there. Newly married. We bought baby things there, curtains, china. We had my parents old utility settee covered with a lovely cotton linen material from their fabric department.

An employee came to our little 2 bedroomed victorian house and cut out the material with enormous shears Windsor was a lovely town for shopping...not so now sadly.

crazyH Wed 18-Feb-26 18:03:09

Read somewhere that the Co-op sells the best beef - Aberdeen Angus 😂

Georgesgran Wed 18-Feb-26 18:09:56

No Waitrose near me and sadly no farm shop either, but my DGS1 says I must be very old because my house has a chimney! I love a trawl around JL in Newcastle though and the M&S there has a brilliant foodhall.

NotAGran55 Wed 18-Feb-26 18:12:34

HelterSkelter1 I totally get your sadness. I was a keen sewer/sewist in those days and spent many hours perched on the stools choosing my patterns and selecting my fabrics. I can smell it now.
When we got the letter to say that the branch was closing I couldn’t face going again as I didn’t want to say goodbye 😢
Don’t get me started on the bus station…

Nannylovesshopping Wed 18-Feb-26 21:54:07

My gd says I’m posh… because I use the more expensive supermarket in Portugal, it’s only because I love their dark green bags! I’m actually far from posh 🤣

Usedtobeblonde Wed 18-Feb-26 22:07:35

Anyone who knew Nottingham in the day, and I think I can include kitty in this would have loved Jessops, now that was posh and Griffin and Spaldings also “tres posh” which sadly became Debenhams and went so downmarket.
Jessops is now JL ,still a lovely shop but you need plenty of money to shop there.
I use Sainsbury’s for delivery weekly and shop at Waitrose about twice a year when I am taken but would find it expensive for everyday shopping.
My eggs come with my weekly shop.

BlueBelle Wed 18-Feb-26 22:25:20

Oh Georgesgran I have chimneys and bedroom fireplaces so I must be very very old (well I am I suppose)

HelterSkelter1 Thu 19-Feb-26 02:34:18

Oh lordy I have chimneys and bedroom fireplaces and I shop at Waitrose. Old and posh.

HelterSkelter1 Thu 19-Feb-26 02:35:07

And wide awake at 2.30

Grammaretto Thu 19-Feb-26 04:40:24

Why was BlueBelle s post removed? I didn't see it.

45 years ago my DM, who knew who was who 😀 bumped into her plumber in Harrods. She was amused but I think shocked at the realisation that he was far better off than her!

John Lewis was where we bought our School uniforms and where I had a Saturday job. Not in the least posh.

I buy organic veg and free-range eggs for the health of the planet and because they taste better. Wine from Lidl...but if you know anyone with a vineyard...
