I shop at John Lewis, Waitrose but the giddy limit is buying eggs from an egg farm.

She is almost 13 and an authority on most things.

Apparently the first time DM took me to JL in Oxford Street I really thought it was fairyland. I still love their stores, and as Waitrose is the nearest supermarket (AND has beautifully friendly staff) that’s where I do most of my food shopping. However, much as I miss many of the lovely old department stores I’d think I was in fairyland all over again if the original Woolworths were to come back to my High Street! Not posh, no, but a little bit of paradise back then.

I don’t think John Lewis is posh at all, I like it because they price match don’t sell rubbish and have good guarantees.

It was a sad, sad day when Woolworths closed.
I am obviously posh because when I go to see my D in the south I travel First Class on the train.
This is because I am 88 and like the comfort and the attention ( and the G&T) and with a Senior Railcard and travelling at the cheaper period it is not too expensive for me.
The staff are so attentive to this old lady.

Shopping in Waitrose, John Lewis and M&S suggests you have more money than most but having more money doesn't necessarily make you posh. I like to shop in these places but I couldn't afford to do it on a regular basis.

Sadly JL has abandoned its original promise of never being knowingly undersold.
It's no longer special IMO.

I went there to look for a new cooker but there were so few in the showroom, I was told to look online or go to Currys. I went to Currys.

Actually, I think Rackhams was posher.

Oh, Rackhams in Bradford was very posh. But even posher before that when it was famously Brown Muffs. 😂

My dear college room mate Barbara and I would occasionally treat ourselves to lunch in the restaurant. Served by waitresses dressed in black uniforms with frilly white pinnies. We could only ever afford cheese on toast or egg and cress sandwiches, but even so…

I mainly shop at John Lewis and Waitrose. In a previous existence I was a Management Trainee at JL in Reading. I am not posh. But, slightly edging into poshness - the very edges - if I am at the Royal Academy in Piccadilly, I pop over to Fortnum’s for lunch. Chicken salad and a Knickerbocker Glory. Scrumptious.

Sago

I’m screaming inside,,,,,,..I hate the word posh.
I would hate be described as posh.
I want to put posh in room 101.
Sorry.

Don’t be sorry! Let’s do it!

I buy my eggs from nearby farms when available or have organic eggs delivered with my organic milk from the milkman. I have an organic veg box delivered bi-weekly and organic citrus fruits direct from Spain via CrowdFarming. Meat from the local butcher, Top ups from the Co-op, Waitrose and Aldi. Does that make me posh? 😄

Frightfully, my dear grin

I consider myself as a person of champagne taste and beer money! But I suppose I get brownie points as I buy most of my vegetables and fruit from our very good stalls in the local market. Shop quite a lot in charity shops with an eagle eye for cashmire and cotton . I use cash yes cash, as it costs the stallholder less than using a card, and as I live alone, I want small amounts of various items.

It works well both ways as I support the market as much as possible and when I am having a bad day, the stall people know what I usually have and are kind enough to bring me things to my buggy and I pay them . So dont know what that makes me but I am happy to help the small shops and stalls to keep going locally. I want fresh and good quality and in small quantities, so very little waste of anything.Suits me.

I'm just surprised that an almost 13 year old granddaughter would have any concept of the social nuances of using a particular supermarket 🙄

FranP Thu 19-Feb-26 20:20:46

Not at all posh, but I find Waitrose a better shopping experience, plenty of staff to help lovely magazine of recipes and free delicious coffee.
Best of all NO personal shoppers getting in my way, bumping and taking up the whole aisle.
Fish and meat are better quality and in the quantity I need. Competitive pricing.
You say farm eggs, but, while they are expensive, duchy original organic eggs are miles above in size, taste and lasting anything else as are most of the veg.
They have an essentials range and I can recommend the washing up liquid, the dishwasher products.

Oreo Thu 19-Feb-26 20:37:53

I’ve yet to buy any good bread or croissants in Waitrose but they have a very good wine section.

Oreo Thu 19-Feb-26 20:38:48

Now that does sound posh 😁

kittylester Thu 19-Feb-26 20:54:39

Having bought both, I would dispute the fact that Duchy Organic eggs are better than eggs fresh from the farm.

SporeRB01 Thu 19-Feb-26 20:57:23

Out of curiosity, I did the BBC questionnaire ‘What class are you’. According to BBC, I am an elite. No kidding!

Posh as I am, I don’t mind slumming it at Morrisons.

I think you’re out of touch - it’s all about sustainability so buy from charity shops and EBay secondhand….
The really posh have their own chickens ….

& muck them out wearing Dior & pearls!

Deedaa Thu 19-Feb-26 21:10:00

I do some shopping in Waitrose and M&S because I still get staff discount in both. I don't go and shop in JL because it would mean hiking over to Reading or High Wycombe, but stiil buy white goods on line from them because I get discount. I get my eggs from a friend who keeps chickens.

Knickerbocker Glory!

One of my childhood memories - going to Bournemouth on holiday, walking up from the beach through the park (there were red squirrels in the park then) and having a knickerbocker glory in Bobby's department store.
The models would be gliding between the tables, showing off the latest fashions.

^I think you’re out of touch - it’s all about sustainability so buy from charity shops and EBay secondhand^….

Charity shops rely on supplies from people who might not necessarily shop there.

4allweknow Thu 19-Feb-26 22:48:05

I buy eggs from an egg station located in the grounds of a palace. No Waitrose or John Lewis near me but there is a tiny M & S food hall two miles away and I sometimes pop in there if I'm not near Aldi!

grannybuy Thu 19-Feb-26 22:55:12

It’s harder to ‘shop posh ‘ nowadays. Our long main shopping street now only has Primark. We lost Debenhams and John Lewis some time ago, plus the independent department stores have also long gone. The shopping mall has Next, Seasalt, Zara and one or two others. We don’t have a Waitrose. I shop in M & S food, for certain things, similarly in Asda, Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Home Bargains and Lidl.

The too posh to push was even directed at people who’d had emergency c sections

Gosh, I never heard that - only for elective ones!

HelterSkelter1 Fri 20-Feb-26 06:19:39

Bournemouth was a lovely shopping centre. DH comes from there and sis in law still lives there. But it is a shadow of itself now. All the dept and large stores have gone. So very sad. But we were very lucky to have had the pleasure of them. I believe the gardens are still there and maintained.

PamelaJ1 Fri 20-Feb-26 06:55:01

I have a really, really posh friend, she dresses like a bag lady and I nearly offered her our old sofas when we replaced ours!
I know she doesn’t go to Waitrose or John Lewis. She is lovely.
