Pipe smoking

One of the last people I know to smoke a pipe died last year, and he was the only person I've seen who smoked a pipe since the nineties. It was nearly as common as cigarette smoking in the sevenries, but then went into a massive decline and a local shop that sold pipes and pipe tobacco closed down due to lack of business.
Anyone still have a partner or friend who likes to puff away on a pipe, or has the habit totally died out?

Allira, like Musicgirl, not a single one of the pipe-smokers I've ever known were were pub-goers.

I'm not sure where this came from.

SORES

My memory is that where there was pipe tobacco/smoking there were invariably mint imperials.

When my maternal grandfather gave up smoking, he turned to mint imperials and, later, extra strong mints. There was always a minty smell on his breath and we would often see his mouth chomping away when he thought no one was watching. He was always a plump man but ballooned even more. His perfect rôle came after retirement - Father Christmas at the church playgroup. He was a lovely man and l was very lucky to have him as my grandfather until l was in my early thirties.

Well, my Dad would stop for half a pint on Saturday lunchtime after he'd been to the market and bought some treats for us all. Oranges, bananas etc.
I remembering him coming home with a paper bag full of mushrooms - that was a treat but now they're in every supermarket.

My dad didn't smoke a pipe but other people I knew did.
My uncle and father-in-law for example.
Neither of them went to pubs - though I did think my father-in-law might have liked it if he hadn't been so anti them!
He lived in a village with what might now be called a "charming" pub. We used to like it when we "escaped" for an hour! grin

My Grandad smoked a pipe all his life and lived into his 80s. 'Where's m'baccy' was a frequent question?
