Quilted toilet paper.

The loo needed buckets and buckets of water this morning to dislodge a blockage and I have decided it was caused by supermarket own brand quilted toilet paper. It is pretty strong stuff and probably just doesn't disintegrate quickly enough.

The paper I always used to buy changed (impoved haha) and became too flimsy. I shal have to buy a variety of small packs to test. Any recommendations?.

Can I put in a word for portable bidets. Basically an oval shaped plastic bowl with lips at the side. It fits over the toilet pan, you lift the seat first. Fill with water, and wash yourself like using a bidet. Then tip the water down the toilet. I swear by mine. My sister bought one for her husband to use when he was disabled and struggled to get into the shower. I think mine was about £15 from Amazon.

Faecal matter is quite fatty, as far as I know. How does a plain cold spray dislodge all of that - especially from all the nooks and crannies. ...and hair...

Of course a pressure washer might...

Well I am going to have fun trying out lots of different packs over the next few months.

Thank you for all your comments. I was just so pleased that I was able to clear the blockage and not have to call out a plumber. And I am flushing the loo every hour. With all the rain we have had I don't have to worry that I am wasting water. I am sure the reservoirs are full to the brim.

Home Bargains.
Nicky Elite Quilted 3 Ply Toilet Rolls 64 Pack (Delivery included) £17.98, so 28 pence a roll and never had any issues with it!

HelterSkelter1 I also gave up on Waitrose Essential paper. Over the years I've had to change brands a few times times when they were "improved" and am currently using M&S Aloe Vera paper which isn't quilted and is reasonably strong.
My daughter uses Who Gives a Crap but I find it too thin (and expensive).
My husband was a consulting civil engineer specialising in water systems and I would never be allowed to use quilted paper!

Next time I have some plumbing done I am going to have one of those Asian style sprays installed.
They are so hygienic .
I'd dry myself with two ply unquilted .

They are hygienic in our country because of the way our cut off valve works, where in other countries some of the water goes back up inside for the next person. My husband explained it to me probably a lot better than I’m explaining it.

We have had Chinese loos installed, great for underneath washing, but the paper gets shredded and does not flush well in one if them. Advised to try Nicky and that does seem to disappear more easily. And it js excellent value too!

My friend who is a plumber always advises against the thick toilet paper because it takes longer to break down causing blockages. He says the cheaper the better. Not because your cheap or your bum shouldn’t have something soft but because it breaks down quickly and keeps the drains clear of blockages.

Yes, use them too at times, I make sure they are biodegradable wet wipes.

Note

"A ban on the sale of wet wipes containing plastic, including baby wipes, is set to take effect in the UK between April 2026 and spring 2027.

Specifically, the ban is planned for Scotland in April 2026, Wales in December 2026, and England and Northern Ireland in Spring 2027, forcing a move to biodegradable materials"

Am not sure I would trust a spray but it sounds interesting. I use wet toilet wipes but they go in a bin next to the toilet and some find that grim, but it is emptied regularly, but still there is a need for toilet paper to dry off.

I use wet wipes too but place them in a compostable doggy bag before putting them in the bin. Can't imagine just putting them in the bin without weapoing!!

I have recently changed my choice of loo roll yet again as the one I was using was too thick and wasn't flushing away and the replacement needed a wad as it disintegrated in use. I think my current choice, Sainsbury's non-quilted made from recycled paper, is better.

The rolls are getting so narrow now, have you noticed? they used to fill the width of my loo roll holder, but not any more.

Luckygirl3 Wed 25-Feb-26 12:13:24

Ref the post above recommending Naked Sprout .... just to say it us renamed Naked Paper now.

Luckygirl3 Wed 25-Feb-26 12:11:56

I use Naked Paper recycled loo paper and tissues.
I don't use Who Gives a Crap as they are not as eco friendly. They bleach theirs and wrap each roll individually in printed paper .. all unnecessary.
Naked Paper is unbleached and comes in a box of rolls that are not individually wrapped.

Wyllow3 Wed 25-Feb-26 12:06:53

top research there 🤣🤣

someone had better mention them quickly so the Guardian gives a full picture

(people who have been around long enough, will recall the matter of the famous coverage of the GN Angela Rayners trousers thread)

Things we talk about as we get older should include toilet paper. I safaried toilet paper on Gransnet. The AI Overview said this.

Gransnet users frequently discuss toilet paper with a focus on eco-friendly, unbleached, and bamboo options, often highlighting brands like Naked Sprout, Cheeky Panda, and Bumboo. Discussions also cover the best value, with recommendations for Sainsbury’s own and Nicky Elite from Home Bargains, as well as concerns about thick, quilted brands causing blockages.

Key insights from the discussions include:
Best Eco-Friendly Options: Members recommend unbleached bamboo brands such as Naked Sprout, Cheeky Panda, and Bazoo for being sustainable and gentle on skin.
Value and Quality: Nicky Elite rolls from Home Bargains are recommended for being affordable and good quality, as are Sainsbury's own brand.
Performance Issues: Some users have reported that certain supermarket brands or "recycled" options are too thin or, conversely, that thick, quilted paper causes plumbing issues.
Practical Tips: Advice includes looking for paper-wrapped rolls to reduce plastic waste and using, or considering, coreless options to save on cardboard.

Other topics mentioned in discussions include nostalgic mentions of Izal medicated toilet paper and warnings against using coloured paper due to chemical irritants.

AI hasn’t mentioned Wype or sprays or wet-wipes in a frequently emptied bin yet, so it’s not up to date.

I’ve recently had a “toilet spray” installed next to my loo. They are very common in Asian countries and I always used them when I was travelling. You just give yourself a quick spray with a jet of water and there is no need for toilet paper. It feels more hygienic and clean. It’s also great for cleaning the loo and I’m thinking that it will have paid for itself within a year.
I do of course provide loo paper for guests who are not so keen on the idea!

Yes my daughter had them installed, she called them “Bum Guns”
Brilliant idea, hygienic and good for the children.

shysal Wed 25-Feb-26 11:42:17

I like Nicky Elite paper. It is quilted, not as thick as some, but still strong. It is also much cheaper. I used to buy it from Savers, but my local Asda now sells it which is more convenient.

Moth62 Wed 25-Feb-26 11:39:59

Can I also echo Rosiesmawagain and say the Wype gel is really good. I didn’t know it existed until I read of it on GN. Got mine from Amazon, plus a travel sized one.

Wyllow3 Wed 25-Feb-26 11:30:00

I buy Sainsbury's own brand re-cycled loo paper. It's fairly thin but happier with the recycled element.
But because I have this bidet, probably less need for comfy loo paper? A dab is enough before transferring over.

I have a bidet next to the toilet, it was there when I came 13 years ago, it's wonderful, one always feels so clean. And any infections or fungus 'down there" that needs frequent washing, sorted.

Dry with dab dab dab of loo paper which you put back in the toilet or keep a couple of bits of old towel frequently washed - the point is with that, you are clean, so thats fine.

I also keep a pair of marigold gloves by the bidet - use obvious.

Cabbie21 Wed 25-Feb-26 11:16:17

I should have explained that she ordered soft toilet paper, not that we were deprived of any!

Cabbie21 Wed 25-Feb-26 11:08:44

When I was teaching, the first thing a new headmistress did was insist on getting rid of Izal in the staff loos!

HelterSkelter1 Wed 25-Feb-26 10:59:08

Calendar girl. I was happy using ordinary waitrose loo roll until it was changed and virtually disintegrated in your hand even before use. So changed to their quilted which was stronger. But as I have now found out is too strong.
Today I bought a 4 pack of Regina bamboo paper to try. Soft but much thinner. Hopefully it will be fine. Currently on a special offer.
I too remember Izal. Used it a lot for tracing paper. Glad to see the back of that thank goodness. We never used newspaper. Surely that would have blocked the pipes as would have Izal.
