Not having to get up early!
Thought my DH still gets up at 6.30, but he is a person of rigid habits in every way!

I'm just loving all the above. Definitely the most enjoyable phase of my life.
Discovered the joy of reading loads of books. I used to manage to read only two pages before the book fell out of my hands, due to full time working fatigue.

I still yet up early at about 6,30 every day out of habit but I absolutely love a slow start to the day.Run the dog out (was dogs but very sadly our old boy was PTS last week )Feed the birds.Make a pot of coffee then read in the bath before a leisurely breakfast reading the paper and doing the days puzzles. That is most days but at least once a week I hit the ground running sorting grandchildren out as DD as a commute and long day and drops them off by 7am.

Not looking out of the window in the middle of a snowy night in winter, and wondering if I would be able to drive to my job in a bank several miles away, along rural roads that had not been cleared or gritted.

Kept me awake many a night, worrying. I was the main key holder, and was expected to turn up, whatever the weather.

I am not there yet either.
I have mixed feelings about it.
We semi-retired, which is not really retirement.

When we properly do, we have big life decisions to make.

This all sounds idyllic...can't wait to retire...hopefully in a couple of years.

Still setting the alarm clock but no longer for 06.30. Enjoying the choice of whether to get up or not. Choosing what to do and when to do it.

keepingquiet Fri 13-Mar-26 16:54:24

I like to wake up and know that the day is more or less my own, so lying in bed isn't something I value.

I like unrushed mornings and quiet relaxing evenings, attempting to make the most of my day and feeling grateful for it,- but most of all I like just going out somewhere on my own and not having to tell people what I'm doing or where I'm going.

For me that's the freedom I've worked for. I'm now having the very best time of my life.

Having the time to enjoy doing the things you love, trying out new hobbies and interests. Not having to be accountable/answerable to anyone else. Being active if you want to be, having a quiet day if you choose to. Retirement is great I really love it.

Grannybags Fri 13-Mar-26 14:33:50

All of the above

Also not having to smile and nod to people I really dislike and disagree with because I have to work with them!

notgran Fri 13-Mar-26 14:28:26

All of the above and being able to concentrate on my own health and well being. I do get up early, by choice and go to the Pool each week day for Aqua Classes, followed by a leisurely shower. Then home by 10.30 to seize the day and if that means binge watching a series on Netflix (or whatever) sobeit! wink

All of the above and not having to worry about trying to control my unruly hair every day for work.

Ziplok Fri 13-Mar-26 10:45:17

I agree with all the above 😁.

58JJ Fri 13-Mar-26 10:41:41

Less stress. Shopping when it’s quiet and being able to attend medical appointments without booking time off.

Doodledog Fri 13-Mar-26 10:10:10

I always say it's not having to set the alarm at night. That never wears thin.

Otherwise, being able to look out of the window and decide what to do - go back to bed, go out and do things, stay in and catch up with chores - the choice is mine, and on the whole I can please myself. The only downside is getting older 👵🏻

Browsing news, Gransnet, Wordle etc with a cup of coffee, in bed with no rush to get up. Plenty of time to do things- and all the other advantages mentioned by others!

fancyflowers Fri 13-Mar-26 08:34:28

Also, as M0nica said, being sure of a regular income.

blue14 Fri 13-Mar-26 08:33:42

All of the above!
Especially like the feeling of being tucked up in bed when it's raining and cold outside.
When I was working I needed to be up at 6.30 to leave the house by 7.15 at the latest.

fancyflowers Fri 13-Mar-26 08:32:46

Being able to sleep in whenever I like.

Not having to deal with other people in a teaching situation.

Having time to search out new recipes and try them.

Having time to see grandchildren.

Grandmabatty Fri 13-Mar-26 08:30:16

All of the above!
I particularly like not having to go out if the weather is particularly bad, like yesterday. I wish I could say long lies, however I don't sleep well and I'm usually up early. But, I can have a nap whenever I want

M0nica Fri 13-Mar-26 08:18:38

Regular income without worries of unemployment or redundancy

Casdon Fri 13-Mar-26 07:50:49

Taking my first cup of coffee of the day in the garden in the summer, instead of in a travel mug on my way to work.

tanith Fri 13-Mar-26 07:45:10

Hearing neighbours scraping their cars on an dark frosty morning and am able to walk, read, shop or just do nothing whenever I want.

Purplepixie Fri 13-Mar-26 07:44:07

I like being able to do my crafts when I want. Miss the social side of work. Enjoy my walks.

HelterSkelter1 Fri 13-Mar-26 07:36:50

As well as all the above, I am having some sleepless nights now, but I don't have to worry about getting up, going to work and getting through a busy day where I had to concentrate and be pleasant!

Meandrogrog Fri 13-Mar-26 07:32:39

Being able to have my time back for enjoyable activities, not feeling tired, going for walks whenever I want to, not having to sit at a desk for hours, not answerable to anyone else, havi g time and energy to cook and try new recipes, not having to get up and at work for 8 am, being able to go shopping when its. Ot crowded, ditto going to the cinema when not busy. There is so much I am so thankful for after years of children and then work. Its the most enjoyable time of life.
