I am so sad to see this, it looks another high quality British manufactured company is going to the wall. I love Denby, it’s the best, most durable crockery you can buy.

I saw that as well. Sad as all my family have been Denby fans having, Cottage Blue, Chevron, Gypsy, and Manor Green.
We currently have large amounts Greenwich and Intro, so hopefully they’ll ’see us out’!
I think one of the most popular and enduring designs was Greenwheat.

Cossy Fri 13-Mar-26 13:46:36

Oh no! That’s so sad

crazyH Fri 13-Mar-26 13:50:16

Oh no - I used to have som pieces - all given to charity shops when I downsized. Should have kept them.

Boz Fri 13-Mar-26 13:57:21

The problem is that they are heavy. Heavy to handle and heavy in the dishwasher.
Together with large ovenware and weighty pieces of le crueset they have gone to family or charity shop.

Le Creuset is enjoying something of a revival at the moment - those cast iron dishes are very much on trend now.

They are currently owned by a Private Equity company so someone take them on.

There is a very nice 'shopping village' near the factory. We were there a couple of weeks ago replacing some of our favourite plates from the factory shop which had a sale on - bargain.

My aunt was very friendly(!!!) with the last member of the Bourne family to be involved in the company.

Barbadosbelle Fri 13-Mar-26 14:23:59

.

I had Chevron too. My first table set when I married over 30-years ago.

Gave it to a friend for her holiday home in France about 12/15-years ago and they're still using it!

Not surprised, they are just heavy and clunky. The younger home owners don't buy it, they just didn't keep up with current trends.

Not far from me is a big Outlet site Denby has a shop, it always appears to have lots of stock, that would be a clue it not doing brilliantly.

Le Creuset is doing OK, as they keep evolving, the same outlet has a shop there too, that's doing fabulously well.

I'm change my table wear every few years, but I now either buy in M&S or JL

I looked up what AI says, because I didn’t agree with your assessment Visgirl.

‘Denby is on trend, particularly within the "modern rustic," "quiet luxury," and "conscious consumer" movements. As a heritage British brand with a 200-year history, Denby has maintained relevance by blending traditional craftsmanship with contemporary, versatile designs.

Here is why Denby is currently trending:
Modern Rustic & Textured Looks: Collections like Studio Grey, Studio Blue, and Kiln are popular for their artisan, hand-crafted feel, rustic textures, and reactive glazes, which align with the trend for natural and imperfect home aesthetics.

"Buy Once" Sustainability: With a focus on sustainability, Denby appeals to the modern consumer looking to reduce waste by purchasing durable, long-lasting products rather than disposable, fast-fashion homeware.

Japandi and Neutral Tones: The Impression and Modus ranges reflect the "Japandi" (Japanese-Scandinavian) trend, featuring muted, neutral colors, soft textures, and minimalist shapes that fit well into modern, calm interiors.

Versatility and Practicality: Denby products are designed to be microwave, oven, dishwasher, and freezer safe, catering to the trend for multi-functional kitchen items that work for both daily use and entertaining.

Timeless Classics: While launching new ranges, classic patterns like Imperial Blue (in production since 1989) remain popular, proving that the brand’s core style is considered a lasting classic rather than a fleeting trend.

While the brand has faced recent financial challenges and potential restructuring due to high energy costs, it continues to trade and is recognized as a "British icon" of high-quality, relevant design.’

I know it is popular because of the high prices it makes second hand on ebay. I like it because I prefer plain crockery, which is heavy and durable, I’m not interested at all in china, and I buy British, so it suits me well.

I think its biggest strength is also its biggest failure in fact, because it lasts for ever in perfect condition unless you drop it, so the replacement rate is low.

They are very heavy it’s true, but almost indestructible 😄
I have a dinner set that’s over 30 years old and regularly used.

MT62 Fri 13-Mar-26 15:47:54

What a shame. I had the imperial blue dinner & tea set many years ago.
Found the dinner plates too heavy after breaking my hand.
I sold them & made more money than what I paid for them.

We have Poole Pottery which my parents gave us as a wedding present nearly 50 years ago. They went bust just before Covid. But, I have one item of Denby - a purple jug which younger son bought me for a present when he was in 6th form.

keepingquiet Fri 13-Mar-26 15:54:25

I used to visit the Denby factory/showroom/visitors centre years ago because it was on my commute to work- I recall being told that it had been sold to the Chinese and that was over ten years ago.

You need a crane to lift them when full.

Denby has never been owned by a Chinese company.

Ownership History: Denby (founded in 1809 in Derbyshire) was bought by investment firm Hilco Capital in 2009. Before that, it was part of Coloroll and, later, a management buyout backed by British venture capital firm Phildrew Ventures

GrannyGravy13 Fri 13-Mar-26 16:07:07

My Denby service is over 30 years old, it is consigned to the bottom of a drawer at the moment as it no longer matches the kitchen.

libra10 Fri 13-Mar-26 16:09:55

We were given a set of Denby Arabesque when we married more than 50 years ago. Some of the pieces are still stored in a kitchen cupboard.

Cressy Fri 13-Mar-26 16:30:10

I have boxes of Denby Cotswold languishing in the loft.

MartavTaurus Fri 13-Mar-26 16:34:47

Oh no. Arabesque was ours - but two crazy cats tigers broke most of it. Don't ask!

Allira Fri 13-Mar-26 16:39:38

I bought Denby for DS and DIL
Should have bought some for myself!

Allira Fri 13-Mar-26 16:44:54

Halo 12 piece dinner service is reduced to £184

I'm not surprised if young people are mpnot buying it.
They don't want lovely china either.
