Is expensive chocolate worth the extra money?

I used to love chocolate, any chocolate but now I am a bit more choosy in which chocolate I buy. I prefer hotel chocolat nowadays but also like lindt. My daughter says she can't tell the difference between expensive chocolates and cheaper ones.

I'm with you, Wheniwasyourage.
The ethical stands of Divine and Tony's Chocoloney means that it's my moral duty to eat their products.
That's my story and I'm sticking to it

I didn't know that hotel chocolat was sold. Maybe it will go downhill now. I need to look at other chocolateirs. I remember googling friars a few years ago and they did sound lovely

Palm oil in cheap chocolate.

I am a dark chocolate lover, cant stand the milk chocolate etc., and as a diabetic cant eat very much- probably shouldnt have any at all, but a small piece of the very dark 70 or 80% chocolate, works brilliantly for me. the one piece satisfies that need for something sweet and am not tempted to have any more.

Good chocolate is so expensive now and I've taken to making DM's recipe for a sort of tablet:

1 lb sugar
Half pint milk
2 oz cocoa
2 oz marge or butter
(Optional, add later, few drops of vanilla essence)

Dissolve slowly in large saucepan then boil quickly to soft ball stage. Allow to cool a bit then beat hard (you can add vanilla at thi stage) and pour into greased baking tray. Mark into squares with sharp knife when cold.
Works for vegans in our family with oat milk and no-dairy spread.

I used to buy a Ritters bar as a treat for battling round the supermarket but they collaborated with Nestlé to produce a “special” bar containing Smarties, and it annoyed me enough to ditch them.

Oh my I have just seen on the Waitrose website a Lindt choc bunny 1kg for 75.00 !!!!!

I won’t buy chocolate that has oil in it especially palm oil

Thanks, twiglet77. I missed that one!

For those who say they like hotel chocolate has anyone tried Martins they are quite different but really delicious. I think I actually prefer them

I was given a box of M & S Belgian chocolates at the weekend. I’ve just looked, and they contain palm oil.

I was given a box of Cadbury’s ‘Dairy Milk’ recently. Full of palm oil, tasted mostly of sugar and not at all chocolatey. I’m afraid it went in the bin.

I usually like dark chocolate - at least 70%. I'm quite partial to Green & Black's Ginger but currently I'm indulging my Cadbury's mini egg vice, rationed to 5 a night. I try to stock up with them, to keep us going for a few weeks after Easter.

I love Aldi dark chocolate (budget) and any Hotel Chocolat (expensive). Mind you, all choc has become more expensive recently. I believe shops are having to store it securely now.
I don’t like Ferrero Rocher, or the fact that it’s encased in plastic.

Someone up thread mentioned Lily O’ Brien’s they are indeed delicious.

That was me! They are truly divine!

Charbonnel and Walker Champagne Truffles are fabulous. I buy them for my daughter at Christmas. Dh buys me a small box too.

I don't think anyone has mentioned the Dubai chocolate that seems to be everywhere. I haven't tried it its VERY expensive.

A tip I picked up years ago to stem the craving for quality chocolate was to
A) buy a bar of your favourite best quality chocolate’
B) break it into individual squares.
C) wrap the squares in foil and place into the freezer.
D) choose one square at a time as it is frozen one can only
nibble it slowly. It soon melts in the mouth but takes so long
to eat that your craving is soon satisfied. Result a whole bar
lasts longer, you eat less and remain guilt free.

I obviously have a very bad palate, everyone says Cadbury's is awful but I love their fruit and nut, the other chocolae I love is Galaxy

I recommend buying from Wonky online. Their Belgian chocolates are lovely and there’s a huge variety in the box, 500g for £25. They have many different types of bar chocolate, milk and dark although the dark ones tend to sell out quickly. It’s all either broken or in unlabelled bars and sold by the kg at £25 but if you buy 2 bags, it’s free delivery and they usually throw in a 500g freebie bag. No, I don’t work fog them, I just love good chocolate!! The cheap stuff leaves a claggy feeling on the roof of my mouth.

Cadburys chocolate is now made with horrible palm oil.

Can you still buy real milk chocolate?

polomint Mon 16-Mar-26 15:39:05

I have bought the dubai chocolate bar a few times. Aldi now sell it but although it was nice, I can take it or leave it, but I wouldn't say no if someone gave me a bar lol

Once I tried Lindt and Green & Black’s there was no going back to Cadbury’s or Galaxy! Nowadays I prefer M&S 100% cocoa chocolate. I also like Booja-Booja chocolate orange or espresso truffles.

GrammaH Mon 16-Mar-26 16:04:01

I'm partial to a bar of very dark Green & Blacks or Lindt dark chocolate or a box of Hotel Chocolat goodies. However, I thought HC had become very dear at Christmas and bought from Lily o Brien instead - they were delicious and tons cheaper

Chocolate is chocolate but I don’t like dark chocolate.
You can tell I’m not a connoisseur 😂

I'm the same, I find many dark chocolates bitter. In fact expensive milk chocolate can be bitter!

Apparently Tony's Chocoloney is the nearest thing to proper Cadburys, though I've never tried it
