Auto correct

Does anyone else question their sanity when they type something and when they ( thankfully) check back for spelling and grammar mistakes find that auto correct has changed it to something quite weird. And then wonder if they had, in fact typed that confused.

There are some hilarious examples of auto-correct gone wrong on TikTok!!

stanlaw Tue 17-Mar-26 14:08:51

My message to a friend yesterday using voice recognition said " I see the tits your birthday next week--"

I was late with an article for our village newsletter and our editor, a lovely, but very correct chap, ex guards officer sent me a stern reminder. I replied ‘ Sorry I am writing at this moment.’ It was changed to ‘ Sorry I am rioting at this moment! His curt response was ‘ Have fun’.

I sometimes forget to read what I've typed because I know what I've typed! Autocorrect and predictive text may be annoying but it's just as bad when it doesn't do it! My Samsung phone annoys me because e.g. I type i and it doesn't autocorrect to I. The same happens when I type im/Im and ive/Ive. None of those are real words. It doesn't autocorrect unintentional nonsense, which my last phone did. I'm used to such corrections so the hasty typing is accepted and they often slip through. I think part of the problem must be that younger people just type without worrying about capital letters, commas or apostrophes. They don't care and I think frequency influences the texting dictionary.

lol hahaha

Mine keeps changing mine to US spellings, but yes it does some weird ones.

Mojack26 Tue 17-Mar-26 14:39:17

I turn it off as it really annoys me

Dreadwitch Tue 17-Mar-26 14:42:41

Yes Monica I don't want to use it. But I cant seem to find where to switch it off.

Google is your friend.

Type "how do a deactivate auto correct on my Samsung phone" and add the type of phone.

The directions may not be particularly helpful, but it is easier than trying to work your way through Samsung's mammoth user's manual.

Loving these! I for one think the world would be a lot more fun if they, by law had to be left ingrin

HelterSkelter1 Tue 17-Mar-26 14:53:50

AuntieE. Luckygirl13 gave me very quick easy instructions to turn it off which has worked and now it makes no "corrections". Thank heavens.

I used to look after a little girl called Sarah. I told mum I'd be collecting Satan later!

Belleringer Tue 17-Mar-26 15:14:35

I messaged my daughter to suggest we found a convenient time for a FaceTime. It was autocorrected to a convenient time for a facelift! She thought it was hilarious but not a bad idea.

Liz08 Tue 17-Mar-26 15:32:54

I like the whackyness of some auto correct errors . I was going to my daughter's party and messaged that I was bringing nipples! I didn't change it because I knew she'd laugh.

MT62 Tue 17-Mar-26 15:40:59

Yes me too. My mistakes. At least on other sites I can edit my bad grammar.

BoggledMind Tue 17-Mar-26 15:46:31

An oldie - "The inventor of autocorrect has died. The funnel is tomato."

Joking apart, it can be both useful and annoying. I try and proofread everything I type but the occasional autocorrected nonsense still manages to sneak in.

Babamaman Tue 17-Mar-26 16:04:25

Absolutely!
Just happened with a post I put on ! Duly ? Came up? Weird

Eddieslass Tue 17-Mar-26 16:15:45

I still think my “best” one was when our daughter-in-laws mum texted her friend to say her recently- married daughter was going to be a nun!! Should have said mum😂 x

Applegran Tue 17-Mar-26 17:14:41

I have always thought that there is a short story to be written where autocorrect changes someone's life in an unexpected way......any authors out there, I hope you might take up the idea!

Fallingstar Tue 17-Mar-26 17:22:01

I hate autocorrect, have written some weird posts on here as a result, suppose I could disable it but am not into tech and will probs end up deleting something essential by mistake.
The worst message I texted to anyone was a young woman we were buying a dining room table and chairs from on gumtree a few years ago. I texted to say we would need her postcode for Satan. Obvs meant satnav. She didn’t say anything just supplied her postcode.

granto3 Tue 17-Mar-26 19:26:12

If you look up You Tube it will show/tell you how to switch off auto correct.

Reminds me of a job course I had to attend when looking for work. I had already got a very good CV. The "professional " CV writer took a copy and "improved " it. The most glaring error was the preschool name was changed from Eeyore's to Eyesores; auto-correct?I found lots more spelling and grammar errors. Seems that the so-called experts couldn't be bothered to read what they had written. In fact, I was glad that I had a decent CV of my own.

AuntieE Sun 22-Mar-26 10:46:23

I do not use autocorrect, as I happen to be a good speller in three languages.

What drives me mad, is trying to find an Umlaut or a German double s when I need one on my smartphone, as it is programmed to Danish as its default language.

So, I don't write German on the phone, but use my computer for German and Spanish, as the keyboard has both an Umlaut to hand and a tilde, although the computer falls down badly on the upside down question and exclamation marks needed for Spanish and on the German double s. You spend ages ploughing through symbols to find them, and then the double s never looks quite right.

But anything is better than having to write Hebrew from left to right!

Bukkie Sun 22-Mar-26 10:53:49

My computer always tries to go to American spellings which I hate. Also it tries to do , and in a list. No the last word is no comma and then and. ill is always changed to I'll

grumppa

Only yesterday Autocorrect tried to substitute incestuous for unctuous.

I have noticed that autocorrect has a preference for words with a kinky sexual connection, could be because it was created by young and possibly rather bored coders.
