Auto correct

Does anyone else question their sanity when they type something and when they ( thankfully) check back for spelling and grammar mistakes find that auto correct has changed it to something quite weird. And then wonder if they had, in fact typed that confused.

I have noticed this particularly very recently as if something has changed.and I cannot find on my Samsung where to switch off autocorrect which I have done in the past. It's most annoying and makes some of my emails look ridiculous or me look an ungrammatical fool! Heaven forehead. Now autocorrect changed my word to forehead. What a chump it is. You will know the word I mean.

I do not use it. All my errors are my own and I am happy to admit it.

When I texted my daughter who was poorly it got changed to 'sorry you are porky' ! grin

HelterSkelter1 Tue 17-Mar-26 09:35:29

Yes Monica I don't want to use it. But I cant seem to find where to switch it off.

Only yesterday Autocorrect tried to substitute incestuous for unctuous.

I get infuriated with autocorrect and recently I came across an explanation as to why it has got worse. In the beginning, autocorrect was based on a dictionary lookup, an authoritative dictionary, possibly more than one.
Now, in addition to that, the wonderful (not) AI is constructed to consider context! I can't imagine how that is programmed but it must complicate the situation enormously and surely must make it more likely to change words by mistake.
That old adage about not changing something that isn't broken comes to mind.

Here's how .......
To turn off autocorrect on a Samsung device, open Settings, select General Management, then Samsung Keyboard settings. Tap Auto replace and toggle it off for your preferred language. Alternatively, toggle off Predictive text to stop automatic corrections and suggestions.

Using predictive text, I sent a sympathetic message to a friend who was poorly, saying : I hope you feel better soon and Simon is coping.
Sent -
message read : and Simon is boring.

HelterSkelter1 Tue 17-Mar-26 10:07:46

Sorry SORES. had to laugh.
Thank you Luckygirl13 will give that a go shortly.

SORES Tue 17-Mar-26 10:15:18

@HelterSkelter1 - he was actually, well known as quiet
and dull, which made this 100 times worse, so embarrassing.
Same letter key, very different meaning.

HelterSkelter1 Tue 17-Mar-26 10:17:52

Sorry that made me laugh even more. I hope you were able to explain it away and friend was not too upset. Maybe it made her laugh as well. I hope so.

Yes!

Apologising to a friend by text I told her I was very dirty. I thought I’d written sorry but the keyboard knew better.

Cressida Tue 17-Mar-26 10:29:58

I usually wonder why people don't read what they've written before posting.

Because we're all in a blooming hurry! grin

Allira Tue 17-Mar-26 11:03:58

Autocorrect seems to have accepted some of my typos as a correct word so doesn't correct them, eg thst for that.

It then changes perfectly correct words and grammar for it's own version.
it's own
it's own
🤬
it's own

It's its own!!

HelterSkelter1 Tue 17-Mar-26 11:21:18

Cressida I think it changes at posting. So you could have read the words and all is fine. Then post and autocorrect steps in. It has done that with my emails.
And what is so annoying is that the word it chooses is often completely wrong.

HelterSkelter1 Tue 17-Mar-26 11:25:28

Thank you Luckygirl. I think I have switched it off. The mistakes now will be my own...as Monica says!

I agree.

Messaged my daughter to tell her we had a diversion on the way back from a visit to see her. Spell check corrected this as a 'divorce '!!grin

Luckygirl3 Tue 17-Mar-26 13:48:54

The bride is open to two way traffic - should have been bridge.

WithNobsOnIt Tue 17-Mar-26 13:49:51

Yes l think autocorrect has got a lot busier with maybe an AI update?

I think it is an appalling piece of really cheap software. Poorly thought out and designed Written by inexperienced, underpaid programmers in countries where English is not their first language

Bazza Tue 17-Mar-26 13:50:09

I have a good friend called Junie but my autocorrect always wants to call her junkie. I do try to remember to read stuff back, I’m not as accurate as I used to be! And my handwriting which used to be quite stylish is now dreadful.

SORES Tue 17-Mar-26 13:58:52

and why does autocorrect use ‘food’ when we type the more regularly applied ‘good’
