tackling shoplifters according to Kemi Badenoch

A few weeks ago I was in Poundland (now closed).
An attractive 20+ year old sauntered past the lady at the till. No intention of paying for her goods.
The lady on the till shouted “don’t come back here I will remember you”
The shoplifter nonchalantly flipped her the bird as she calmly left the store.
Un-bluddy-believable!
No deterrents now and they’re getting bolder ….

Mini moon, thst seems to be standard practice. People walk our with their weekly shop in a trolly

The store my DH work part time in advises staff not to confront shop lifters. They report the theft to the police but never find out if anyone has been arrested.

Kemi does herself no favours does she.

Shop lifting is at epidemic proportions. It needs police/retail to get together and work out a way of reducing, preventing theft. It doesn’t need members of the public feeling we ought to be front line preventative.

It was discussed on the Jeremy Vine show last week, and I caught part of the discussion. Basically the conclusion from the experts was that as you don’t know if the shoplifter is violent, has a knife or other weapon, you should not physically tackle them.

I’d be too scared.
Sorry Kemi,

She's 6' apparently.
And quite formidable!
I'm not. 😀

She's actually about 5ft4, so won't be tackling many people (maybe some primary school children). It's empty words.

Nobody should do this at all. What awful advice

It just shows how out of touch she is with real life.

I would and do tell the staff but wouldn’t confront the shoplifters, they’re often drug addicts.

Allira Sat 21-Mar-26 14:41:39

How would we know whether or not they might be carrying knives?

Yes, she can say that easily but does she ever actually go into a shop?

Talks cheap, it costs nothing 🤨

Kemi Badenoch says she would confront a shoplifter as long as they were not bigger than her and encourages stronger people in the community to do the same. Are members of the public really going to put their lives at risk in this way? I know it is very difficult for store staff but some security guards do not intervene either. The only deterrent I can think of is more police on the street, certainly not members of the public taking on this role.
