A huge march against the Far Right

(526 Posts)

Yesterday we had a massive march believed to be 500.000 people in London against the Far Right and not a word on here, vey little on the news and way way down towards the bottom on the BBC news page
I ve put this in chat as I m not looking for hard politics or arguments but I m proud of the people marching against the rise of the far right, against the division and hatred that is currently being spewed out by Farage and friends
Well done London and all the people who travelled to give out a message of togetherness, of kindness, of inclusion.

I'm only just catching up with this thread Bluebelle. Well done for posting, and starting a debate.
I agree that some of the rhetoric is demoralising but, I think, comes from a very vocal minority. I knew who was going to be adding negative, derisory comments as soon as I saw the post wink.
You have a lot of suppport - Cossy, Lemonjam & others, too many to mention thanks

How interesting, do you hve any further data or links please?

1 million 18 to 24 yr old not in education or training, can YOU justify that.

Where has that figure come from David49, it doesn’t appear to be from an official source?

‘As of early 2026, youth unemployment in the UK has hit a five-year high, with approximately 732,000 young people aged 16 to 24 unemployed. The unemployment rate for this group rose to 16.0% (Nov 2025–Jan 2026), with a significant increase of 85,000 18-to-24-year-olds becoming unemployed in the three months to October 2025.’

BBC figures so it is probably accurate or underestimated depending on which bias they were using then

BlueBelle and Doodledog and anyone else who thinks sneering at posters who hold different views deserves saying how much you wouldn’t want to live next door to them and how it shows them ‘for what they are’ and other personal and childish stuff… man up and make your views known on the actual subject rather than silly ad hominem attacks.

Show me where I have sneered, please?

I have not attacked anyone for having different views. I am simply saying that the constant belittling (loony lefties, woke Londoners and so on) is 'not in the spirit of Gransnet'.

I do not make 'silly ad hominem attacks', either. When you point me in the direction of where I have sneered, perhaps you can show me one of those?

I know you will deny this, but it is very obvious that you pounce on every post I make these days, and it's tedious.

As for important marches let us not forget the Jarrow marchers and the success of the suffragettes, eventually ! We got side tracked didn’t we on this thread?

So we did.

Thats what matters.

When people cease to come out onto the streets and say, "not in our name"

it will be a sad, silent, and generally, an oppressive time.

I knew about it and am with you definitely against them, and think it was a good job to show how you felt. I spoke to several people here and we are also proud of them. I was busy supporting a special Ukrainian day we had here , which went very well and that is the way we try to help around here, and make people feel cared for and welcome

If they were born overseas they migrated to the UK

Or are you putting some other definition in migration

No, I understand thank you, but you don't seem to understand percentages and statistics!

For 18–24 specifically, there are about 700,000–750,000. Please check data before basing your argument on it.

"NEET” is often misunderstood. It includes very different groups:

Someone temporarily between jobs
Someone with serious health challenges
A young parent

So, around 1 in 8 young people (18–24) in the UK are NEET. The biggest drivers are health issues, job market barriers, and disengagement from education/work pathways, rather than a single cause.

"Just over 22% of Consultants are immigrants.
Commonslibrary."

Actually 22% are foreign nationality, many migrant NHS staff have obtained British nationality so the number is far higher for those born overseas.

But that is not what you said, David49.

You said:
probably a majority of consultants are migrants

That is not true.

Okay, I get the impression that no-one knows what constitutes a London based woke.

An insomniac who resides in London?

(Sorry, I'll get my coat)

😄
I was just going to put forward Jeremy Corbyn for what constitutes a London based woke but yours is funnier.

Well some of these hate filled posts make it easy to see why the country is in such a bad way The sneering ‘hippy love stuff’ ‘London based wokes’ says so much about the poster and if nothing else the thread has pointed out to me which posters I would not like to live next door to, much prefer to live next door to an immigrant.

Agreed, BlueBelle. This thread is horrible. Difference of opinion is one thing, but the name calling and disrespect of those who don’t buy into the anti-immigrant rhetoric shows those doing it for who they are.

If I was a migrant worker in the NHS or care industry I would be complaining like hell about the way I am paying taxes to support the freeloaders who won't cross the road to do the work that I have travelled thousands of miles to do.

Many of those in the NHS that were born overseas and highly paid, probably a majority of consultants are migrants, there are many other doctors and nurses too

Of course, many of our highly qualified doctors have migrated overseas too.

Very unfair David49. Many of those are desperately trying to get work but the jobs aren't there.
Not everyone is able to become a doctor or nurse and it requires special skills.
I know some young people who attend several interviews a week, sometimes get second interviews and then nothing.
Calling them freeloaders is insulting to those who would much rather be in work.

There it's plenty of work we allow migrant workers into the UK because the locals won't do the low paid work that need just basic skills that can be learned in a vewdays.

Some people (yes, them again) just don’t know how fortunate they are. The country they describe bares no resemblance to the one we live in. No wonder anxiety and depression is on the rise when so many seem to wallow in negative, critical moaning and exaggeration of the difficulties we face.
The country is not ‘on its knees’.
It’s making me think we need a bit more Dunkirk Spirit and blessings counted.

You claim to want centrism but use quite polarising language, which gives it a tone of frustration rather than genuine moderation David49 (Tue 31-Mar-26 06:44:22) I'm not at all sure you understand what centrism is.

DaisyAnneReturns Tue 31-Mar-26 08:03:11

I bet this march was organised by a bunch of London based Wokes. and their friends on the media.

They are the real threat to this country not Nigel Farage. (WithNobsOnIt)

That reads like a slogan rather than an argument. Real life is a bit more complicated than ‘everyone who disagrees is a threat.
