Following on from HelterSkelter1excellent thread on art I thought I would put an end to the fantasy and bring us back down to reality!

Sorry.

What is your favourite piece of art in your home?

I will start with mine, a piece we couldn’t really justify when we bought it 25 years ago but I fell in love with it and we lived in a barn conversion with huge walls and there was a big gap!

I treated myself to this for my 65th birthday. It's by Greer Ralston who is a Scottish artist, my art tutor and a friend. I now have 4 pieces by her, so I suppose I'm a collector

I have 3 prints imported from the USA 20 something years ago.I saw one in the background of a furniture catalogue so called the company to see if they could tell me who
/ where I could find it .
It ,s by an artist called JJ Holstein and called Jazz at Tacamoe(sp) station and the lovely woman on the phone sent me a small catalogue of his other works.
I ordered 3 I have the jazz trio,a violinist with a gold earring that my GC al have tried to pick off the print and two men playing chess.
None of the figures have facial features ,they are just blank and black.
I still love them now as much as I did when I saw the first one .I have them positioned so I can see then even when I,m sitting with my back to them, they are reflected in a 6 foot long mirror opposite .

I have a painting of our house which hangs above the mantelpiece which I love, and also a few limited edition prints by the Edinburgh Sketcher, which - as the name suggests - are sketches of places in and around Edinburgh.

We have two etchings… by a tutor of ours from art school. Both have Welsh subjects .

We have an eclectic mix of original art, posters, stuff from Etsy etc which are all about us, our family and our interests.

My very favourite things are 2 bronzes - one of very little monetary value but bought by our children one Mother's Day - it represents our family.

The other was bought by my lovely DH and is called 'Where the Heart is'.

I have various pictures/prints but my favourite is of bluebells in a wood by a local, amateur artist, bought for me by my dd because she knew it would remind me of a particular event in my life.

A small uiet watercolour of a few anemones in a vase. The painting is muted greys and purples and it is in a wide mount, probably once white, now a gentle cream

I have known this little watercolour all my life. It belonged to my grandmother and I have loved it since childhood.

This is another favourite of mine. It was painted by a lovely, gentle lady who was living with dementia. She sold her paintings for donation to an Alzheimer's charity.

I have a painting by a local artist, who I know, of a part of our beach looking towards the cranes that helped unload coal for local our Steelworks from the ships, I love the cranes they always looked like huge giraffes and can be seen from many parts of the town, unfortunately they are being dismantled as steel making industry is changing, but I will always have my painting.
My DH isn't a fan but everyone who visits comments on it.

I can’t pick a favourite. My house is filled with pictures and there is a box of a dozen more under the stairs. My brother in law is an artist and I have a few of his. I go to the Summer Exhibition at the Royal Academy every year and usually buy one or two prints. We often go to Oxford Art weeks studios and sometimes buy a print. There is a small village nearby which has an Arts Festival every other year. I bought two items last year, including a tiny original oil. Where do I put everything? Most of the rooms are full of pictures - some are there permanently but others are swapped around. I don’t have a favourite but there are a handful I couldn’t do without.

My DH paints so we have various scenes dotted around the house. This one is Staithes harbour in N Yorks. I've always loved this place since first visiting as a very young girl. I have since fulfilled one of my dreams having stayed in one of the lovely little cottages overnight and walking down to the beach under a dark sky with crashing waves below. Magical.

It's hard to choose which of our paintings is my favourite as it can vary from day to day. I do like this one of an atmospheric rainy late afternoon in Edinburgh.

Aveline Sun 12-Apr-26 13:15:49

It's by Henry Kondraki

Aldom Sun 12-Apr-26 13:29:36

For sentimental reasons I've chosen
Pen y Fan in the Brecon Beacons.
This was the view from my husband's bedroom window when he was a boy.
The picture was painted for him about 30 years ago, by a family member.

The Brecons is a lovely area, Aldom. I love this painting we have, of the Black Mountains.

We inherited this from my parent’s home, it’s actually appliqué, I know nothing of the history. It brings back memories.

Does our kitchen splashback count?

Grandmabatty Sun 12-Apr-26 13:58:34

Marmin- Mondrian! Jaxjacky, I like that

Bluefeathet Sun 12-Apr-26 14:00:36

Kittylester: that's by Bob Barker! I have 6 of his prints, and my favourite is War Horse, currently in my dining room.

Coffeedrinkingthinker Sun 12-Apr-26 14:04:53

Yes the kitchen splashback counts. It "spoke " to me. Did you do it yourselves?
Also I particularly liked the dementia ladies art!🙂

I love him. We have 2 prints too. The bronze is my favourite though.

Love the Mondrian splash back; what a brilliant idea.
My favourite picture in my house is this whimsical watercolour by a local artist. I don’t have it out all the time as watercolours fade but it lives in my wardrobe and cheers up many mornings.

Oh, I like that - we have a Mondrian inspired tableware set in our motorhome. I always think it looks cheery.

crazyH Sun 12-Apr-26 14:57:20

Marmin - that’s one colourful splasback 👌
