I have the long rods ready, used insulation tape to stop the rods separating. They will both have no contact with the render and I can reach fine via the kitchen steps. I could have used a dowel, which would have gone through the grommets, but only realised that yesterday, up to then I was using the extended ends up against the render, The hooks seem very strong, time will tell

Temu were about 1/5 price of what sellers in uk are asking for shade net. I have ordered 2 of 2x1 m for the kitchen window and utility door which is half glass. Temu offered me RM or Evri, I chose RM as evri are playing games again. It will be much nicer to have silver net. The utility room net is certainly capturing the heat and blocking it, the inside glass feels coolish

I put them up just now, it took seconds to lift the rod in place. Downstairs is aired, now the back French doors must not be opened until the rods are down. Each set-up cost < £15 and the shiny side is very shiny. I still have light inside

Looks as though that will be very effective. This week will be a good test and then when this heatwave passes, can be easily folded and stored till the next one. Well worth the effort and the small outlay compared to the expense of outside shutters, awning etc.

Like filling gaps to keep draughts out, it's the sensible first step..to keep the heat out.

We foster cats for a charity, and it's a struggle to keep them cool. We've bought alkanet reflective woven silver foil. It's attached with cup hooks at top and clamps at bottom. It makes a real difference immediately. Windows propped wide to enjoy occasional breeze.

I bought DD3 a Dyson fan when her first baby was born in 2019 as I remembered only too well what life in a London Victorian terrace had been like with a baby in 1976 and then I thought, hang on, don’t I deserve one too?
So I bought my first, now I have one upstairs, one downstairs and another on order when JL get them back in stock!
Yes they come at a premium but are more than worth the extra.

We have found taking the loft hatch off has made a big difference.

It b.freezing here in Oz. Coldest day we’ve for ages but at least the sun was shining. Sitting over the fire now, nighttime.

Three things
If only all this hot air inside our houses could be suctioned off to heat the water.
And secondly if only it were cold at night to cool down the fabric of the house and cool us down.
Thirdly what makea a desert climate where the nights are freezing and days roasting?

We are in for a difficult night HS the only extra thing I can do is use the en suite and bathroom extract fans. Opening the loft hatch will be useless as there is a lot of latent heat trapped in the roof tiles, felt and insulation. There are vents in the roof and soffits etc but outside is too hot and there is no breeze

I`m glad I have linen sheets and will likely lie on top of them tonight. We have more than another week of this

My BIL has suggested using the foil ‘blankets’ used by mountain walkers etc to cover the outside of our French doors? Might look into that today.

What a pity we can’t ‘bottle’ all this excess heat, and utilise it gradually over the cold winter months.

Mine are just the same as the green house weave material NotSpahetti, but the threads are strands of tough silver foil. This works to reflect the heat whilst still being quite see through!
I can't actually believe how much this is blocking the heat and have them fixed to the outside of large South facing windows/patio doors.
Mine were from Amazon, £40 ish. I looked elsewhere, B &Q, Garden Centers etc but couldn't find any at all. I think they are called something like Alumiet.

Maximum downstairs today has been 23 and was 22 until about 3pm but upstairs is a different matter, Heat is really building up there and no point in opening windows tonight with a minimum temperature of 20 overnight

I will be up at 4 tomorrow, hoping to catch 16 degrees, I`ll have to scurry around opening every window and door. It is going to be unbearable outside much earlier tomorrow with 30 around 10am and will soon be hotter than today when it was 32 here. I did feel satisfied when it was 32 out and 22 inside and decided I was not going to be bored nor waste my day nor move too much. I sewed on and off through the day and the only time I will use my fan will be during the night

Reflective fabric does work, anything that will repel the infra red waves that heat everything they touch. It needs to be on the outside. Also bubble wrap is good and will stick to panes with water spray, on the inside for that

Just saying, if you stick thin fabric on the glass then you do not have air to help insulate but it is obviously better than nothing. Metal does conduct heat and air would act as an extra barrier

The system I set up has air between that and the window and the air will heat up before glass does

Looks very much the same V3ra, mine was called Aluminet and is slightly shinier looking maybe, there are a good of sizes so you can choose to fit. Is'nt it sad to have to be thinking of all these stratagies to combat heat such as this? Hope you get sorted soon if that's what you choose as its very effective

Up at 4.30 and gardening - just sat with a cup of tea, totally still, warm and peaceful. Currently 20c in the garden. Will have a siesta this afternoon, and continue this routine until heat has gone.

House about 24c yesterday, but I anticipate it will be hotter today. We have a portable a/c and that room remains 21c. We have big shades on the south/west side of the house and that stops the sun hitting the windows, but the ambient temperature is very high, and so it is difficult to keep the house cooler than 24c. All curtains now drawn against the sun on the sunny side - north east until it goes around to the back about 10am.
