A thread for people who have been on GN a long time

I was sorting a few papers out yesterday and a writing pad sheet fluttered to the floor and on it it said just ‘December 2013’
and underneath that was a list of names, that I soon realised were GN posters. It was probably not long after I had joined GN and maybe me trying to remember names but I thought some old timers may be interested to have a look and see who they recognise,
It might set some memories off

I genuinely can’t remember now SueDonim

maddyone and I were I very regular contact at the time
Her post caused great upset with one member of the family though that was definite.

Maybe she continued to post and was banned ??? 🤷‍♀️
No idea really

Hello Thisismyname1953.
I have no links with Wales (unfortunately, lovely country).
I'm actually in Devonshire, on the edge of Dartmoor.
My name is because I was raised with lots of chickens, even sharing their shed at night sometimes.
I've been on GN for a very long time and am now ancient and decrepit. 😁

Has anyone mentioned Greatgranny/grandma, I cannot remember her exact name? She lived in France/Switzerland. What I do know is she was very independent but struck a close friendship with several people so when she stopped posting sddenly, after saying she was going for a walk in the mountains, members raised the alarm and as a result, sadly, her body was found at the bottom of a steepslope where she had obviously fallen. Perhaps one of those involved is stil on GN abd can cinfirm the details.

Yes I remember that tragedy. I can’t remember her exact name. So sad.

Greenfinch Mon 13-Jul-26 20:22:10

This was Greatnan.

Elegran Mon 13-Jul-26 21:04:45

Mamie

I have been here from the beginning. You missed out Elegran.

I don't post as often now, but I'm still around!

Iam64 Mon 13-Jul-26 21:09:57

MOnica, yes Greatnan was a regular when i arrived. She was.very welcoming and an interesting poster. No surprise to learn she’d led an interesting life. As you say, she lived in Switzerland and loved mountain walks. She was reported missing by gransnet friends. Mumsnet joined attempts to raise awareness and find her. Tragically she’d fallen walking and her body was found at the bottom of an incline.

Wasn’t there another poster who lived in or near Switzerland - Jura?

Iam64 Mon 13-Jul-26 21:15:58

Yes Jura has frequently joined and left gransnet, registering under various names. I haven’t seen her posting recently. Her style and comments always lead to her previous incarnations being mentioned

I know I was here in 2012...I joined a group of GNs at the hotel by East Midlands Airport..I met Kitty Lester, Tegan....and sorry, forgotten the other names. I was about to divorce and GN members were very supportive..no trolls in those days!

Was it that long ago!!!!

Nightowl was there and, I think, Maw. There was a lady from Nottingham there too but I have forgotten her name.

I think the lady from Nottingham was trendygran. I think she had come to the airport by public transport, which took some doing back then. I haven’t seen her name on here for a long time.
I remember you specki4eyes

kittylester Mon 13-Jul-26 21:25:51

Wow, well done Nightowl

Jura had lived in England until she and her husband retired. She came to a couple of meet ups in Market Harborough.

I remember a lady who had a very busy life who suddenly left. I think she had a factory and also had a job as a carer, possibly in a school?

merlotgran Mon 13-Jul-26 21:46:53

Greatnan lived in France and grandjura, as she was known then, lived in Switzerland. They were good friends at the beginning but fell out just before greatnan went missing although jura took part in the search.

Another poster who used to visit greatnan was WhenI’m64 - not to be confused with Iam64 who is a regular poster.

Mamie Tue 14-Jul-26 04:49:31

There was a lot of co-operation and support on Gransnet when Greatnan went missing. I was in France and remember contacting mountain rescue teams. Jura did a lot locally to keep the search going until Greatnan was found. It was very sad.

Would that have been Scentia ?

MayBee70 Tue 14-Jul-26 15:55:49

Jura has been banned. Some people felt that, even though she and her husband had lived and worked in this country for all of their adult lives and had children still living here she had no right to comment on what happened here sad.

Iam64 Tue 14-Jul-26 16:07:15

Jura has returned numerous times with different names. Some time ago she left announcing gransnet was bad for her mental health. So far as I’m aware she isn’t currently posting - posters don’t get banned because “some people” don’t believe they have a right to post on gransnet

MayBee70 Tue 14-Jul-26 16:15:20

She has definitely been banned.

Wyllow3 Tue 14-Jul-26 16:15:23

I just wish I had known about GN back then!!! Came in Autumn 2023

So for me its just a couple.

Iam64 Tue 14-Jul-26 16:20:07

Ok maybe 🌞

NotAGran55 Wed 15-Jul-26 06:30:01

Yes, thank you Beechnut I couldn’t remember her name.

As you say, it’s not because she was not entitled to post on threads about the UK, however frustrating it might have been for the rest of us to be lectured about all that we are doing wrong!

She is French BTW so although she spent her teaching career in the UK you can’t say «all her life»

I didn't say she was banned for that did I?I just pointed out that she had definitely been banned.. I did say that some people didn't think she had a right to comment on this country because she no longer lived here.

MayBee70 Fri 17-Jul-26 17:39:37

Oh and I said all of her adult life I believe?
