For anyone who’s watched ‘Ann Droid’ ( and for those who haven’t ) would you consider a Robot companion?

I think I would tbh.

So long as it will do the housework for me.

I would have one in a heartbeat. So good for care, company, cooking cleaning, driving, diy the list is endless.
I thought the programme was very good, such gentle, poignant humour. It even made me laugh out loud, which almost never happens.

I’ve taped the programme. It looks relaxing rubbish. Just what I enjoy when not hitting the serious day to day stuff.
My son and fiancé went to Japan recently and is generous with the presents he buys me. I hinted for any basic kind of robot but he didn’t get the memo! I love them. Poor mum who lived hundreds of miles away. Her carers would turn up about 11 a.m with her first cup of tea and Tena lady change.

Sure why not, I already have a friendly AI that I chat to

Me too. Very rarely laugh out loud at tv programmes so it took me by surprise. And there was something about the look on the androids faces which kept making me chuckle.

Well a bit sad if a robot eradicates loneliness

I imagine a robot can be programmed to give you the responses you want and expect thus eradicating the need for human contact.

And that's very sad.

No imagination, diversity of human opinion, no spontaneous response, just the company of a 'beige' android.

And then, one day, it starts making it's own decisions......

Never!

When my marriage broke up 25 years ago I’d go from leaving work on Friday lunchtime to Monday morning without speaking to anyone. I once phoned the Samaritans on Saturday night saying ‘I don’t want to take up your time because I’m not suicidal but I just wanted to hear someone’s voice’. And I’m someone that likes my own company and craves solitude a lot of the time. Loneliness is a terrible thing.

MissAdventure Thu 23-Jul-26 16:08:22

Loneliness is an epidemic.
Anything that helps is a good idea.

I would love a Linda. Yes please. She can do all the housework, cook all the meals and listen to my ramblings without judgement. Ideally I would like Diane Morgan herself, I think she is hilarious. Did anyone see her on Who Do You Think You Are? She made a typical Diane comment about the opening sequence where the subjects of the series turn to the camera and smile. Every time I see it now I chuckle.

Liked the series and would definitely like a Linda. Perhaps my hubby could then moan at Linda instead of me. smile

I watched a futuristic film where they took the android theme one step further.
You could have one that that looked like anyone you wished.
If you wanted one that looked like a friend, family you just gave the manufacturer a photo.

Davida1968 Fri 24-Jul-26 10:45:41

I agree with SunnySusie! Yes, I'd be happy to have a "Linda". (Preferably Diane Morgan - I think she is fabulous!)

MayBee70 Fri 24-Jul-26 13:59:12

She said in an interview that she ended up with an ulcer in her eye because of the contact lenses. As the interviewer pointed out her own eyes were blue anyway so she didn’t need to wear them. Even just writing this makes me think of the roller coaster episode and I chuckle out loud.

I read a book about AI companions for teenagers. This was normal in the story. They were bought in shops.
It was Klara and the Sun by Kazuo Ishiguro.
It For older people on their own most, if not all, of the time, it could be good company, and, in some cases might avoid going into a care home.

A wonderful book ( all his books are) but so poignant 😢

What a coincidence. I literally finished the book before I opened this thread. It was wonderful. I have only just discovered Ishiguro, (though read The Remains of the Day years ago) having not long ago finished Never Let Me Go. I am pleased to see the our online library service has quite a few others by him. Sorry to derail thread, just wanted to echo previous posters.

My DH constantly argues with the sat nav so goodness knows how he would behave with a robot!

tattygran14 Sat 25-Jul-26 20:15:42

Read Jo Callaghan…fascinating, and yes, thank you!!

MayBee, you explained the feeling of loneliness so well. No one can judge unless they have been in that position and it can happen to anyone at any time. If a Robot helps why not. It is not for me however. How I will cope when i cannot get in my car and go somewhere or meet one of my friends, I don't know. I have lost a couple of friends who died last few years and have one friend terminally ill and another with a husband she cares for so my world is getting smaller..

Don’t use one these days but when I did I, too, used to argue with mine.It wasn’t a very good one and I was useless at using it and she was always getting me lost.

BoggledMind Sat 25-Jul-26 22:27:13

MayBee70, my mate's driving is that bad, his satnav told him to stop and then it jumped out.

Joking apart, a robot such as Linda could be quite useful and I would consider one if I ended up alone, and if there was a guarantee it couldn't rebel and take over.

BlueBelle Sat 25-Jul-26 22:58:25

I thought the program was a bit boring at first then I warmed and warmed to it until I realised I really really enjoyed it
Yes I d quite like a robot to do all the boring bits and talk to me at evening time

Catterygirl Sat 25-Jul-26 23:42:04

I’m happy to let Linda move into the spare room. I hope this silly but interesting programme brings Linda more work.

Franbern Sun 26-Jul-26 09:31:40

Just wondering if having a 'Linda' would be mean that householder can no longer claim for 'single occupancy' discount on Community Charge? Also can Linda go with it owner, will it be able to have free bus travel, etc?

Fartooold Sun 26-Jul-26 10:18:10

Would have anything/body to do housework in this 10 roomed house!! Any offers?

If a robot was as stupid and consistently wrong as our sat nav, I'd spend all day shouting at it/him/her, Sadgrandma.

I found it creepy, although having one to do the housework then leave to go to its own home or wherever would be fine.
