Mumsnet , and gransnet, often features posts from desperate women in a miserable home/ marriage they can't escape due to lack of money they control.
A tax free million is enough to walk out and start a new life without an abusive partner's knowledge or permission.
Yes, and naturally I'd thought of that, but 25% of people? That seems very high.
Having read the thread, I see things I hadn't thought of, such as a partner who would squander the money. That makes sense. I haven't done the sums, but at first glance, far more than 75% of people on the thread have said they would tell their spouse/partner, and most would tell adult children, which is more in keeping with my own thoughts, but not with those of the survey.
