Unbelievable What I've Just Read

“I can't believe that there are people walking about this earth who have no idea about anything”………….. I saw two more examples this weekend - two motorcyclists visited our neighbour and both were wearing shorts and a tee shirt. Yes, I accept it’s very hot but shorts and tee shirts offer NO protection when they have an accident and slide along the road with little more than thin fabric between their body and the tarmac! Another neighbours children were playing in the cul de sac, one on his bike and one on her two wheel scooter. The bike rider was wearing a helmet, the scooter rider wasn’t. Based on that, does riding a scooter in any way protect a child’s head when the child gets knocked off/falls off and their skull meets the road?
There really is no accounting for peoples stupidity!

I hope your neighbour checked they met the correct safety certification, moonwatcher and bought a legitimate brand via a legitimate supplier!

Eclipse glasses must meet the ISO 12312-2 international safety standard and be labelled as such. There are counterfeit ones on Amazon...
I would want to buy via an authorised retailer of these items - not your lady "selling on"!

You can look through a colander I am told.

I don’t think you look through the colander. I think you stand with your back to the sun, holding the colander up so that the sun shines through the holes onto the wall that you are facing.

Then you get an image projected onto the wall.

I’m pretty certain that’s what I read.

Agree with Lathyrus- you don't look through the colander but apparently get multiple images of eclipsed sun projected on wall.

Colander for me but I don’t think we re getting much in the East anyway so probably a non event and I expect I ll not be around for the next one so not getting my knickers in a twist about it

Just don't try to look at the sun - the eclipse isn't worth the possible damage.

I'm sometimes amazed by what I think is common knowledge .
I hope that some government warnings abou the dangers of staring at an eclipse are put on TV more frequently.

I recall when Covid was peaking - a lady standing outside a supermarket telling everyone that it was just a simple flu and we were all overreacting and being hysterical.

Yesterday, I passed a couple standing at a bus stop . I thought that they'd probably been waiting a very long time judging by the expression on their faces ,but had ignored the road signs announcing the closure.
I told them that there were no buses .
The lady tried to blank me .
They both just looked at me .
And they didn't believe it.

I am partially sighted and a group, AMD, meet monthly. We hired a room, and it was in semi darkness, and we were feeling around for light switches. Apparently we didn't need any light! I told the person in charge we actually need more!

Yes - I believe you stand with your back to the sun and hold a piece of card in front of you. Lots of images of the sun and the eclipse should appear on the card.

When any astronomical event is announced it’s usually too wet or cloudy to see anything. If only Wednesday’s partial eclipse would bring rain!

On the same basis, I'm pegging washing out whenever it clouds over here, but it hasn't got wet so far....

I haven't got any of those glasses but I'm fortunate enough to have a solar filter for my camera so weather permitting I will get some good pictures. It will be a good view from my window over the Irish Sea.

I never look at the sun, and wear sunglasses even when the sun is diffused, am very photo sensitive and even looking at a candle flame can set off a migraine so when we sit down in a restaurant where a candle has been lit I have to blow it out.
So I won’t be trying to look at the eclipse but if it means the hot temps drop, if only for a brief time, I will be happy.

Fallingstar I am the same, I have light-adaptive glasses for everyday wear all year round plus sunglasses for bright sunshine. I also wear my sunglasses when there is Winter sun, especially for driving and I can't cope with a flickering candle on a table in a restaurant. My optician says that lighter eye colours are more sensitive to sunlight so I am very careful.

I’ll go to bingo, the last one we had was total where I lived and was an amazing experience. So don’t feel I’ll be missing out.

I recall that there was a total eclipse when I was at school, somewhen in the 1960’s, we were told to bring into school a strip of photo negatives where the image hadn’t developed properly to use as a filter for looking directly at the eclipse

i have been looking for clip on glasses for watching the eclipse as i wear glasses. nothing!
there are all sorts of eclipse glasses to be had but nothing that can be used if you wear glasses!!
i probably won't watch the eclipse especially as i would have to drive to get a clearer view - the sun goes behind trees about 4.30 where i live.
i did see the total eclipse in 1999(?) and it was so eerie.
