When PoW, he once asked that there should be happy or funny items printed/broadcast daily. Didn’t last long. Misery is much more “interesting”.

Even though I am now slightly bored by the continuous discussions about the eclipse it was less stressful and depressing to have the news focussing on it.

I get the BBC Upbeat newsletter every Monday. It contains news items which are positive, and sometimes even funny. You can subscribe to it via the BBC News app.

Actually, last night, BBC 10pm news, which featured the eclipse European and Iceland wide was heart touching, and feel good, as people came together in beaches, parks, viewing spots, kids interviewed, but at the end a moving plea, we are - all humanity - but small under the wonders of the Universe. Sniffle happy.

I rarely watch the news on the tv, I tend to watch on the internet, that way I can choose to end with something more lighthearted.

I don’t watch it

I mentioned this 'happy ending" to someone of my age a while ago but she didn't remember it at all. I think of it quite often as I like to listen to the 10 pm news before I go to bed but often think I shouldn't as it's so depressing.

I do remember the happy news story at the end.
Forget all the death, destruction and chaos in the world because a kitten has been rescued from a drainpipe.
It did help oddly enough.

Well the regional BBC News after the main news always has a good hearted story, mine is "look north" and reckoned to be the most watched.

As does the 5pm R4 slot, honestly, well worth a tune in while getting on with something.

I seldom watch the news these days, I pick it up on online new feeds, but I seem to remember that the ‘and finally’ lighthearted news was always on the local news segment after the main news program

I think that was ITV in the 70's with the likes of Reggie Bosanquet (with Anna Ford, Alistair Burnett and Andrew Gardiner)

Reggie Bosanquet's annoyance and despair over some news items were always quite obvious and he would often add a personal comment to them.

The ITV 'News at Ten' always made the reporting interesting. I was in my mid/late teens and would always watch when I came home late evening.

The BBC news team were still very stiff and dour then with a single reporter - ITV had a pair who often interacted with each other especially at the final more light-hearted report.

Yes I remember, a rescued tortoise or a duck with one leg or similar, which now gets about on a roller skate.
