UK food prices.

I think someone came on GN trying to "sell" some kind of strategy thingy to reduce expenditure on food, so was correctly reported by Tizliz. I didn't read it properly. I just saw the dubious blue link.

Thank you 🙂

Vancouver and Island has, for many years, been known to be expensive. Think trying to keep up with California. A lot different to the east coast. Big cities not matter where you go eg Montreal, Quebec, Paris, Rome, Barcelona, New York are just like UK cities, more expensive.

When you get back to Vancouver you might like to hire bikes to explore. Pedal or electric.. Lots of safe bike lanes. Biking round the sea wall is great. It's fun to rent a single or tandem kayak at Creekside Kayaks and paddle round False Creek or use the little Rainbow ferries to take you around.

If you get to Victoria there's lots to see. The area around the harbour is easy to explore on foot. The Legislative Assembly is interesting. I like Rebar, Bastion Square. for lunch. Enjoy.

I live in Alberta. The joke around here is that B.C. doesn't mean British Columbia, it means Bring Cash - and lots of it. B.C. is known to be VERY expensive, and Vancouver especially is not cheap. The housing prices are INSANE.

😂😂😂

We went to Vancouver, Banff and Calgary in 2008, and have had many trips to the US over the years, but not for about ten years now, it all seemed very cheap to us then. North Americans generally found our prices expensive. That's all changed, we know from our son who visits the States quite often and step granddaughter who lives there now, food is shockingly expensive. We also have friends in NZ who tell us that food is expensive there too.

Here's an interesting article about grocery prices in Europe and howthey differ and why (NOT the UK though):
finorum.com/grocery-prices-europe-2026-eu-basket/

This one cover the world but is less info dense.
It's from the World Economic Forum.

www.weforum.org/stories/food-water-air/this-map-shows-how-much-each-country-spends-on-food/

I did a shop in California for my son and wife not too long ago and the prices were really high it seemed to me. But the US spends only 6.4% of income on food.
Obviously all these figures are an average. The poor will spend a larger proportion of income wherever they live

I think the food is cheap in the UK but then the wages aren’t that high so it all evens out. Ours has gone up a lot recently, especially some of the basics like bread, cheese, milk etc. The cost of houses here is the same as London prices. Ridiculously high. Average now around $1.2. million for a basic 3 bedroomed home. Nothing flash, either. Plus we are suburban, not CBD.

It's still cheap here really - is it Engel's Law (i think so) - as income rises, the proportion of income spent on food falls, even if actual spending on food increases in absolute terms.
In countries such as the UK we spend less than 10% of income on food. In poor countries it's 50% I seem to remember.

Would have to check.

Who and why??

Yes, Food costs more here although the quality is very good. I find Vancouver restaurant prices cheaper than the UK though. Electricity is much cheaper too. Swings and roundabouts I suppose. Beautiful city, beaches and the mountains

We don't appreciate how cheap good-quality food is in the UK. We visit our son in New Zealand every year and honestly, the food prices take your breath away! People economise by only eating meat or fish a couple of times a week. Even the home grown veg are expensive though.

My US-based son thought UK food prices were cheap this summer compared to those in his American city. That’s a first in almost 25 years.

I visited Calgary and then Vancouver last year . What a difference in grocery prices .
I too have fallen in love with Canada . Pristine and very friendly people.

France - seems very expensive this year particularly.

Goodness. Have the best time, we visited Canada last year and fell in love with it, we visited Vancouver City and Vancouver Island, as well as other places. Isn’t Vancouver City one of those most expensive places in the world?
