Cheesy Christmas movies on the QVC app on our television. From now until Christmas I will be subjected to this torture every day. It's only the beginning of September. Eek!!

MiniMoon Wed 02-Sept-26 21:00:21

Exactly pably, it isn't even Halloween.

Once we get into December I have to watch The Muppet Christmas Carol and National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation.

MiniMoon

I am rationing him to one a day. I will find something else to do while he has his daily fix of schmaltz.

You have my sympathies, MiniMoon. Plugs out! Alternatives to schmaltz on demand!

Depends on the sort of Christmas ahead in practice, but I hate all the commercialisation and wish for the days long ago of bonfires, family local so see people in bits not en masse, special food, help for those in need...
....no expectations about How It Should Be.

I know this is a bit off topic but I am hoping that there may be some Christmas film experts on here. Is 'Diehard' a Christmas film?

Yes.

Wyllow3 Wed 02-Sept-26 22:10:15

It is set at Christmas and it's a good yarn.

MissAdventure Wed 02-Sept-26 22:23:26

I'd find that very difficult to live with.

Me too maybee70 always a bit quiet afterwards. X

Are you by any chance a two TV household MiniMoon or have a decent lap top to disappear upstairs and watch/listen to what you want or vice versa? It solves a lot. Sure, if you want to watch all stuff together then thats difficult.

Personally I would pop the schmalzy one upstairs but.....

One of the nicest Christmas films I have seen is called The Christmas Train, adapted from a novel by David Baldacci(sp) who usually writes detective/ thriller type books.
Yes it is soppy in that there is love element and the setting is unbelievably gorgeous but it is feel good and has a splendid cast.
Try to catch it if is repeated during “the holiday season”.

I received a Christmas catalogue in the post yesterday.
The first this year.

I was in B&M this morning, It was more Christmassy than Halloweeny - and people were buying it.

I have to confess that I returned from holiday in Norfolk with about 10, mainly stocking, presents, but none was specifically Christmassy.

We did once find one which was not quite so cheesy, but unfortunately, I cannot remember what it was called so have never been able to find it again.

Perhaps one of you can help.

Storyline: young, single, American mum (stoney broke) pops her children into the car and drives off. (Can't remember whether she had a destination in mind, or was unable to continue paying her rent and had been evicted.) Loses her way in the dark in a state she does not know, sees a signpost stating Bethlehem. Realises this must be some small American town. Gets there, and is allowed to stay in the house of an old woman, who is in a retirement home. They have a marvellous small-town Christmas and of course, she falls for the old lady's helpful handsome young male relative.

Ring any bells?

Auntie E Could it be *"The Christmas Secret"? Sounds similar.

In the US we have three "networks" that air wholesome type movies and series The Hallmark franchises. These are safe for grandkids to view.

I watch Miracle in Manhattan every year when it is on, and there are a few others, not before the end of November though.
Once Boxing day is over I'm done with all that.

WelshPoppy Thu 03-Sept-26 15:33:30

Same story but names and settings have changed. I love them.

suelld Thu 03-Sept-26 16:20:04

Sometimes we need these sugar sweet Christmas films to escape the pain of real life… don’t knock them!
I really don’t want to know about them pre November, masses of birthdays to deal with in Sept/ October first!
But occasionally it does one good to just sit and forget problems amidst fictionalised snow, beautiful scenery, gifts, and romance all with happy endings. We know real life isn’t like that, so it’s good to revert to childhood and pretend!
Sorry you Christmas haters.
My Christmas is usually chaos, so nice to imagine it’s not!

TiggyW Thu 03-Sept-26 19:38:17

Could be worse - could be cricket!! 🏏 🙄😳😵‍💫 I’d rather watch the cheesiest, corniest Christmas film any day! 🎄 🤣

BlueBelle Thu 03-Sept-26 20:01:19

I m very happy to be called a grinch bring it on Harris

As it's a Christmassy thread, on the local news today they had some bad news for some.

Apparently due to the strange weather this year, the sprout crop has been decimated by some beetle or other -- the most obvious pesticide is a no-no as it kills bees too.

Perhaps the s'markets will source some Ethiopian or Peruvian sprouts (? - I didn't check), for the subset of folk who like them? (count me in - vffftttttttt - that's better . . . .)

TiggyW Thu 03-Sept-26 20:58:35

Sprouts are for life - not just for Christmas! 😋
