Does anyone remember 'Matey'?
Like shaving foam, thay you could wash with?
Matey's a bottle of fun!
You put me in the bath!
I'm loved by everyone!
And I'm always good for a laugh!

Oh yes. Did it have a blue top shaped like a hat?

And scape me dry with a really rough towel. I’m sure there were shards of glass in it!

Ha I like a rough towel

Then my mum would cut our toenails so short we'd be limping for a week until they grew back a bit...
Poke around in our ears, and clean our fingernails (with a sharp implement)
Happy days! grin

Pushing back the cuticles as far as she could get them! 😩

Bath night once a week, and the only day in the week in winter when there was heating in the bathroom!

When we were small, we were told to hold a folded wet face flannel infront of our eyes while our hair was washed. This was supposed to prevent shampoo getting into our eyes, but it did not work and the shampoo stung.

We had ducks and boats in the bath - great fun.

I remember at the age of three (I think) being told off for sucking soapy water out of my face flannel, and on a different occasion for weeing in the bath and saying it tickled so nicely.

You should have seen Mummy's disapproving and embarrassed expression. This was long before children, especially I suspect, little girls were allowed to "play with themselves."

If it was very cold in the winter, we were bathed in the big deep sink meant for washing clothes in, or had our hair washed at the kitchen sink.

The only time I remember having my bottom smacked was when I, aged four, refused to have my hair washed. It was washed and I cried so hard that Mummy never smacked me again. She did not realise, and I never told her, even after I was grown up, that I cried, not because it hurt, but because I was simply furious with her.

Always every night with bath salts that never quite dissolved so were scratchy on the bum!! When i was little mu. Used to wrap me in a warm towel and put me on the shelf in tbe linen cupboard above the hot tank. Remember having pipe cleaners in my hair for curls. Ive always had a fringe. I remember sitting next to the fire drying my hair then dad bought me a hairdryer mum used to go to the hairdresser every week for a shampoo and set ir a perm and went into a curtained cubicle (where nobody saw you with wet hair).
Afterthought bath it was straight into bed with lovely warm flannelette sheets and hot water bottle and dad reading me stories.

I remember my dad coming up to get me out of the bath and dry me. I would have been about 7 and feeling faintly embarrassed.

Soft rollers to sleep in....glad they weren't the hard plastic one's. Miss A

Fringe and wart Bluebelle...you can have mine, I've still got both.

MissAdventure Fri 04-Sept-26 19:19:36

I think mine was washed twice a week.
Bay Rhum (or rum?) Combed through it, to make it thick, then "soft" rollers put in it to sleep in.

Baths were once a week, as a child. When teenagers we washed our hair twice a week over the kitchen sink.Hair had to be dried with head upside down near the fire until we begged for a hair dryer.
We seemed to survive and be clean.

We bathed every night but hair was only washed once a week and took ages to dry before hair driers appeared. I had a friend whose hair was never cut and she went to a hairdresser every week to have her very long hair washed, dried and replaited.
I was horrified when I heard that babies are no longer bathed every day from birth. All that milk, sick, wee and poo!

Grannybags Thu 03-Sept-26 22:21:50

Oh yes the frantic hair brushing! Mine was curly and always tangled…ouch!

SueDonim Thu 03-Sept-26 20:25:02

🤣🤣 at the slap up the back of the head in the hair cut video. That’s a very Glaswegian thing!

Daft aren't they? smile

Cossy Thu 03-Sept-26 12:58:31

Then there was the hair washing and drying and brushing (or as I called it, pulling out clumps of my hair)

JenniRen Thu 03-Sept-26 12:35:08

😂

None of that for me either, although I do remember having my hair rubbed vigorously after Mum shampooed it.

I longed for a fringe, too, Bluebelle but wasn't allowed one so I used to snip a bit of hair off every few days thinking no-one would notice. Of course my mother did 😀

SueDonim Thu 03-Sept-26 12:24:41

Those are so funny, MissA. They’ve made me smile at a time I’m not feeling very smiley so thank you. I have to confess, it reminded me of my approach to my GC. I cannot abide messy faces and hands so I arm myself with a damp cloth in order to give them a quick swipe over. My GC soon learnt that Nanna approaching with a cloth in hand meant they were going to cleansed, whether they liked it or not, and they’d meekly submit to my ministrations. My youngest GC even closed his eyes in anticipation. 🤣🤣

I’m intrigued as to why you wanted a wart, BlueBelle - did you mean a beauty spot?

MissAdventure Thu 03-Sept-26 08:25:17

Oh a fringe!
Sorry, read that wrong.

MissAdventure Thu 03-Sept-26 08:24:13

A fridge and a wart, BlueBelle? grin
