I do remember being given an eggcup of whiskey to rub on toothache and I remember having scorched legs sitting too close to the fire to get warm I also remember being given newspaper to wrap my sanitary towels in and told to never let Dad see it !! I remember not being alowed to wash my hair or to go swimming when I had a period and I remember longing for a fringe and a wart and never getting either

That’s so funny. I was one of six so I was third in the bath after my two elder sisters, my younger sister next followed by two brothers, the bathroom led of the kitchen, what a memory, no traumas just a happy childhood.
The toilet was on an upstairs landing decorated with Elvis film advertisement posters, my father was in charge of the army cinema. Happy days.

Those are so funny, MissA. They’ve made me smile at a time I’m not feeling very smiley so thank you. I have to confess, it reminded me of my approach to my GC. I cannot abide messy faces and hands so I arm myself with a damp cloth in order to give them a quick swipe over. My GC soon learnt that Nanna approaching with a cloth in hand meant they were going to cleansed, whether they liked it or not, and they’d meekly submit to my ministrations. My youngest GC even closed his eyes in anticipation. 🤣🤣

None of that for me either, although I do remember having my hair rubbed vigorously after Mum shampooed it.

I longed for a fringe, too, Bluebelle but wasn't allowed one so I used to snip a bit of hair off every few days thinking no-one would notice. Of course my mother did 😀

Then there was the hair washing and drying and brushing (or as I called it, pulling out clumps of my hair)

Oh yes the frantic hair brushing! Mine was curly and always tangled…ouch!

We bathed every night but hair was only washed once a week and took ages to dry before hair driers appeared. I had a friend whose hair was never cut and she went to a hairdresser every week to have her very long hair washed, dried and replaited.
I was horrified when I heard that babies are no longer bathed every day from birth. All that milk, sick, wee and poo!

Baths were once a week, as a child.When teenagers we washed our hair twice a week over the kitchen sink.Hair had to be dried with head upside down near the fire until we begged for a hair dryer.
We seemed to survive and be clean.

I think mine was washed twice a week.
Bay Rhum (or rum?) Combed through it, to make it thick, then "soft" rollers put in it to sleep in.
