Preparing for El Niño

Angela Eagle has advised us to prepare for the expected bad weather by stocking up on food stuffs.

Wine and beer have been on offer so we have lots of those and so have tea bags.

What will you stockpile?

I’m going to brush up on rubbing two sticks together to create a flame and then learn how to do smoke signals from the fire I have created , made possible by the amount of kindling and logs I have stockpiled, no supermarket needed.
I can of course then cook on said fire.
I will be self sufficient especially if I learn how to catch rabbits and fish.
How long is El Niño supposed to last?

Thank you Utbb. 🤣🤣

I don't stockpile. It exacerbates the problem to my mind.
The only thing I will make sure I have plenty of is my medication.

In case the phones run out of charge, we could buy two hand waving flags, and relearn the skill of semaphore.

What is ''El Niño''? I'm English and only speak English; no other language!

I won't be stockpiling anything; I never have and never will. I'm not thoughtless enough to empty the shelves, denying normal shoppers anything.

Then there will be all the selfish morons, like with the vaccines, etc., snatching up all the bog rolls they'll never use in 3 lifetimes! HA!

Never mind. You could just pop down to a café or brasserie and buy a pizza or lasagne. Bon appetit.

We have been warned about a bad El Niño here, too. But they didn’t tell us to stockpile. Just to be aware that temps might reach the mid 40Cs and there will be a great fire risk ( more than our usual annual risk ). Every year we are worried by fire here so I suppose this year will be more extreme. Usually we might get temps over 40C a couple of times a year but they are saying this will be longer.

Is it La Nina that causes cyclones in the Southern Hemisphere? Or El Niño?
Drier for you then, but wetter and stormier for us in Northern Hemisphere?

How nasty so ignore the self righteous on here Samsarel

I don’t stockpile, or ‘save for a rainy day’ if I run out I ll find an alternative if there’s no alternative I ll eat grass and drink out the rain butt
I hate these doom messages because if someone in any kind of power gives this message out, however benignly it is meant, there will be lots of people wiping the shelves clean, just because wewouldn’t do it doesnt mean it won’t happen.

I m expecting a rough winter after this beautiful summer but so be it

I don’t think Samsara was nasty- I find the self-righteous comments harder to swallow.

MawsRosie Sat 05-Sept-26 11:43:34

Not forgetting that I won’t be able to afford my heating bill if it hasn’t conked out completely , so better stock up on cashmere jumpers.

I wonder how Rosie would feel if I got a second dog to throw on the bed?

Mamie Sat 05-Sept-26 11:40:21

After 6 months of SE Water, I would recommend dry shampoo and cleansing wipes!
In rural France we had woodburning stoves and bread oven and bottled gas for cooking. Now we only have electricity. Will take a bit more planning. 😮

"kindles can run out of charge"
😲 of course!
We could be incommunicado too.

Yes, I have a pile of unread books which have been ignored because of the Kindle, and candles.

Getting in supplies of roof tiles and a bit of extra guttering is probably a good idea, too grin

Surely we need 'battens' so that we can deal with our 'hatches' grin

MawsRosie Sat 05-Sept-26 11:08:38

Back in the day, GN especially on a Saturday ( when the cat’s away, I mean mods) etc used to be fun, a laugh, lighthearted, amusing and company for those alone.
Come on, girls ( and guys) - how dispiriting for OP to be shot down ,maybe it’s not only foodstuffs that might be in short supply, but smiles and empathy?
Anyway, I’d like to add books to the list as the TV might be down, kindles can run out of charge - but of course (also seriously) not forgetting candles and batteries.

As it happens, that is precisely what we are doing.

Part of our roof is a bit dodgy.
Getting it fixed realtively sooner rather than later.

"I feel occasionally we'll have to open a tin or two because otherwise it's kind of a waste, unless I gift these tins to my children in my will"
😀

JenniRen Sat 05-Sept-26 11:01:22

El Niño occurs regularly, but I thought affected the Southern hemisphere more than the Northern, causing cyclones and extreme weather conditions.

Best stock up on our Australian and NZ wine!

pably15 Sat 05-Sept-26 10:57:05

I.ve always got a good supply of tins in the cupboard, wine and spirits are taken care of, just incase anyone has toothache of course ,,a little whisky numbs the pain.

TerriBull Sat 05-Sept-26 10:53:36

From what I remember the "stocking up" situation has been on off advice since Brexit, which was when I started acquiring a stash of non perishables. Then again we were told to do the same during lockdown. So I've always had a supply of baked beans, Heinz of course! When one son comes down with children for weekends and does his stint as Sunday morning breakfast sous chef he often marvels at my stash of beans, well laughs at them actually hmm before looking at sell by dates, I do rotate them, there might be some out of date. However having Googled that I'm told tinned food is fine way, way past it's sell by date, even tinned fish unless there are visible signs of something wrong with the tin. Just as well, because I have stocked up on tins of other varities lately following government advice, tuna, pulses, soups, fruit, custard, rice pudding. Therein lies the problem, like a nuclear deterrent, I don't particularly want to use them, it's not food I'd choose to eat, it's a "just in case" stash, but I feel occasionally we'll have to open a tin or two because otherwise it's kind of a waste, unless I gift these tins to my children in my willgrin and then son obsessed with sell by dates would only chuck the out of date ones out anyway ungrateful swine

Moving on to food that has to be cooked, dried pasta, rice etc, plus freezer foods. If power cuts are going to become a thing and data centres are using such an inordinate amount of those resources, we'll be more dependent on tinned stuff. Should we all consider getting some sort of Primus stove?. All in all, we joke but what's coming down the line it sounds grimshock

Extra pegs for the washing, a rain hood (umbrella no good), wellies and more wine.
