It kicks off tomorrow - anyone here going?

Cabbie21 Wed 09-Sept-26 23:27:00

No, but I have seen it in France.

Greenfinch Wed 09-Sept-26 23:32:55

I saw it in France as well.

I'd be mildly interested but put off by the thought of it's being one long queue along the display case.

When we had a home in Normandy, we regularly took visitors there.

I am amazed that security is such, they feel it is safe to have a flat display in a case you can bend over. In Bayeux it was upright, and the barrier a metre or so back.

In fact, now I consciously realise that, I may well go and see it while it is in the BM

I don’t know how it will be done here ( I have heard about allowing people in at ten minute intervals?) but we were a little disappointed in France. We were given headsets to explain things but the queue moved so slowly that the relevant piece of tapestry was way ahead .We just had to abandon the headset and see what we could see.

We saw it in France so won't be going again, much as I'd like to, we're not up to standing in long queues.

I'm on the mailing list for the next tranche of tickets so fingers crossed.

I saw it with DGD just before the museum in Bayeux closed last year. It was quite fitting as I'd taken her mother to see it years ago, as well as countless school parties.

I won't bother to see it in London. I've got tickets to see the Renoir and Love exhibition instead next month. And also tickets for Moulin Rouge in Piccaddilly. That can be my French fix this autumn because puppy is too young to go over there yet!

For anyone who hasn't seen the Bayeux Tapestry in France and who doesn't want to queue to see it in London there is a wonderful copy in Reading Museum.
The full size Victorian copy can be seen in the Bayeux Gallery.
It was created in 1885-86 by women of The Leek Embroidery Society.
The Tapestry is 70 meters long and hangs on three walls.
A guided tour costs £8.
When I viewed the tapestry it was with a group and we had the guided tour. Later a friend and I returned to the gallery, which was empty, and we spent an hour, slowly taking in the detail.
I recommend it to anyone who is interested.

I heard on the radio that tickets are sold out until the new year.

grannyjan2 Thu 10-Sept-26 13:22:35

I "queued" first thing on the day they went sale, the queue took just over 2 hours, but I was able to get on with things and just keep an eye on it
We go in October.

JamesandJon33 Thu 10-Sept-26 14:03:39

No, saw it in France and we didn’t have to pay

Margs Thu 10-Sept-26 14:06:38

As has been noted, the cost of train tickets (if they can be bothered to run on time) puts the exhibition beyond the reach of anyone Oop North.

Mollygo Thu 10-Sept-26 16:24:41

We saw it in France with Children and grandchildren, so we won’t be going again.

TwiceAsNice Thu 10-Sept-26 17:11:48

No andI don't fancy seeing it in the way it’s displayed. I did see it in France many years ago and it is impressive. We bought an audio accompaniment to listen to as we walked along it.

SpinDriftCoastal Thu 10-Sept-26 19:54:27

No, but I did see it when I was teaching. We took a party of 50 children to France for the week and were doing a project on the Bayeux Tapestry. Best school trip ever.

I wish! Health and other irritations prevent seeing it in the flesh, very disappointing as I've always been fascinated by it.
Not sure about the way it's being presented, though. I'd much rather see it mounted on the wall - and more people would get a reasonable view of it that way. Ho hum.

When the kids were younger we saw it twice. The war was being covered in History Lessons at school so was rather good to see it. I remember both times we had the tapestry all to ourselves and the headphones explaining it all were very useful. We stayed for ages in the room/gallery. Won't be going again but just reading about the copy in Reading Museum, I am going to try to see that, I knew nothing about it and I don't live too far away.

Grammaretto Fri 11-Sept-26 06:47:54

I saw a perfect replica in Denmark . There were no queues at that museum.

We saw the one in Reading Museum too - didn't even know it was there until we popped in one day while passing. Museum was almost empty so we had the whole place to ourselves almost.

Saw it in France some years ago too.

I am “Oop North” and I have a ticket for October. Can’t wait. I’ve queued for the Dead Sea Scrolls, Tutankhamen etc in the past. Absolutely love the British Museum!

SillyNanny321 Sun 13-Sept-26 13:50:34

Feel really jealous(😂) of all who can go to see it! Would love to but now age, disability & lack of cash make it impossible. So will just have to wish & hate you lot Lol!! 😂

silverlining48 Sun 13-Sept-26 13:55:44

I saw it in France too, but some years ago.
