Is Harry setting up a rival court?

I read that Harry and Meghan have announced some upcoming public engagements. Is this the start of setting up a rival court to the mainline royals?

If so, is there any way of controlling their behaviour and impact on the royal family?

I think that unless the press stop advertising and scrutinising every move they make (real and imagined) there will be increasing pressure on William and the king.

I think they’ve played a blinder by coming back to the UK and just ignoring everyone else’s concerns. The RF’s attitude of don’t explain, don’t complain is going to come back big time and bite them on the butt, and I think H and M are relying on this to get exactly what they want.

I think the public displaying disapproval is going to be the only message that could get through, but after the sycophantic display the other day I doubt H and M will ever notice.

What do you all think?

Surely some of you can see that Frenchgalinspain post is going too far, even on these threads.

I agree Ilovecheese and does nothing for the image of GN.

Agree. Sensationalist gossip-mongering and rumour- spreading.

The children should be out-of-bounds as a vehicle for such mischief-making.

Gossip and rumours, and nasty stories are not exclusively the reserve of the press, though heaven knows they started the whole debacle and add fuel to the fire. It is social media where the blame lies, and fools then grab the reigns and go running with wild stories. The rumours are put out by people on YouTube, reddit or facebook.

A "rival court" - this is total nonsense.

I am with Iam64 and others who feel that this couple should be left to get on with their lives - and yes, that will involve some public appearances because that is what they will be asked to do as the son of the king and a well-known American actress - it goes with the territory. It does not indicate some personal pathology.

One can't help noticing that being a son or brother of a Monarch sometimes leads to redundancy, unemployment, forced retirement in some dismal rural property in the middle of nowhere, with no friends, no job, a downgraded title and a very bitter disappointed wife .

Just sayin'.

They can still have public engagements. They both need paid work at some point.

Can any private individual have a public engagement?
Could I?

Would anybody be interested in attending my Grand Opening of my Fridge?

Yes Maw, have a public engagement, I'll come to your fridge opening, it's a quiet rainy Saturday here after all !!

Your post sounds like you're a merkin. "Big time " and "butt" are American terms.

Let me help you with some English idioms

In our language, English , " Played a blinder" means "Performed outstandingly well".

Harry and Meghan have not "played a blinder."

They are on their arses, up the creek without a paddle, whistling in the wind, flogging a dead horse, on a hiding to nothing, at the end of the line, out of the frying pan into the fire.

The writing is on the wall. Just like it is for Harry's Uncle Andrew and Aunt Sarah. Just like it was for his great granduncle Edward, and Wallis, another ambitious divorced American wannabee who never made it to the "big time".

Agree with Lucky girl & Iam64 - there's absolutely no reason why they shouldn't do public appearances.
I'm sure we've got gransnetters who've been speakers for WI & similar.

The amount of publicity generated for a cause by their appearance depends on media interest, while that is still lively then they'll be in-demand personalities.

I should think they probably both have an agenda after the Kings public statement as they voiced their opinion immediately after it went out. They wanted to be private figures now consider themselves public figures and on it goes ...

Now we're all curious! Are you a famous celeb?

For all you know I could be Camilla...

" a rival court" puts me in mind of Blackadder for some reason. Lots of strutting around and cod pieces. Perhaps some Mozart and outrageous wigs.

Iam64 Sat 12-Sept-26 20:31:29

grey fur - I fear you’ve hit the nail on the head there. Let be honest, a bit of pomp n ceremony is often impressive to watch, I’m a sucker for all the kings horses and men, most of us enjoy aspects of tradition and continuity. It’s also slightly bonkers. Strutting around, well marching then, outrageous gold carriages, and wigs. Add Mozart and what’s not to enjoy

That's very funny greyfur 🤣
