Do you remember your first ever visit to a supermarket ?

I was thinking the other day about the first time I ever went in a Supermarket. As a child, I'd been brought up using only local and corner shops,my Mother used the old co op but eventually it acquired new premises and morphed into a supermarket. I can remember staring at all these goods set out, shelf after shelf of them, no one to ask to serve you these items, having to put it in your basket before you'd handed any money over.It felt astonishing and now we think nothing of it.When I think back now it had VERY limited stock but it was the most ever food I had seen on display .It surely must have led to a certain amount of overbuying as with the local shops you'd probably go with a list, buy exactly what was on it, unless the shopkeeper told you of his special offer or something 'New in' !

This was my first supermarket, Sainsburys in the Kings Road, Chelsea. It was right next to Boots where I worked on Saturdays in 1965. But it didn't open until 1966 so before that I walked down the Kings Road in my lunch break and bought a meat pie at the small counter Sainsbury's.
This area was set back from the Kings Road but has now been demolished and replaced by posh buildings which face the road.

The first supermarket I remember was the NAAFI in Berlin in 1964.

The first one I remember was the Dairy Farm but I have just had an interesting conversation with my mother (98) about this.
She can only remember the grocer in Yim Po Fong St. (aka the comprodor) I don't know why, I’ve just looked up the meaning of the word and it doesn’t seem to mean grocer!
Still thank you for this, it has provided conversation over dinner this evening.

I can’t remember going to a supermarket until about aged 16. It was Safeways In Hadleigh, Essex.

Just asked AI for help regarding supermarkets in Southern Trinidad in 1963 and may have accompanied mum on shops to Allums. Definitely went to a large supermarket.

Yes - a shop called Maypole suddenly allowed customers to pick up a basket and select items instead of queuing at a counter.

Most odd.

I remember taking my mum and auntie to Morrisons in Halifax around 1974 . They loved the shop . I had a little mini . Not sure how we got in with all the shopping ! Happy Days .

They opened a Fine Fare supermarket on the site of our local cinema in 1961 when I was fifteen and I remember going there with my mother “to have a look”! We didn’t buy a lot but she was very impressed with having such a wide range of goods on display. The small food shops on either side couldn’t compete of course and, sadly, soon went to the wall.

A new estate was built where I lived, with a shop between the old and new houses. It was an independent grocery shop and was self service. What a novelty, putting your shopping in a basket and taking it to the lady on the checkout. I think I was about 10 at the time.

Yes, 1965 and it had just opened opposite our house. We could buy Bird's Eye cod balls which I loved.
